Explaining the Rules
The spectators quitened for a moment before getting even more rowdy, and Osho watched as a figure stepped onto the platform that had been created for the announcer, their stride confident and with a hint of dramatic flare.
"Good morning, gorgeous people!" A sweet voice echoed through the event area, and the crowd got even more excited as they recognized the figure on the stage.
She wasn’t overly tall and wore a pretty eye-catching dress, one that covered her but also emphasized the curves of her body, but not to an obscene level, yet more than enough to get everyone’s eyes on her.
The various Mana screens also displayed her, allowing everyone to get a look at the adorable and lively face with blonde hair that had been tied into a ponytail and ocean-blue eyes of one of the more popular personalities of their Citadel.
"If you don’t already know who I am, the name is Miranda, but you can call me Mira." She struck a pose, and the crowd, especially among the guys, went wild.
’Oh hey, I actually know this one.’ Osho thought, for once not being wholly ignorant about a popular individual within the Citadel.
Mira, as she liked to call herself, was the leading singer and dancer in a popular idol group called ’Mi-Side’. She had quite the reputation and was doing quite well despite onky being in her twenties.
People saw her in a good light due to her great voice, dancing skills, beauty, and charm. Charm that was most likely the main reason she’d gotten picked for the role of announcer.
"Finally, the day has arrived. There has been quite a bit of foreshadowing for today. But we shall wait no longer, and we shall finally get a glimpse of the myriad of talents or Citadel has to offer. So, how about a round of applause for our adorable juniors that will be partaking in the practical segment of this examination?" She gestured to the grandstands where the students sat, and a moment later, a long series of applause erupted from the spectators as the students were given quite the recognition.
Once this slowly faded, Mira continued.
"Before anything else, though, I’d like to take a moment and appreciate the effort that went into this event. Our Blossom Citadel may not be the greatest in the world, or even of its level, but if nothing else, we don’t do things half-heartedly." She turned to the VIP booth.
"Our beloved Citadel Lord and everyone else involved. We thank you for making this event possible." She said, her voice momentarily losing its dramatic lilt as genuine gratitude seeped into her tone, and the spectators and students followed suit, with almost everyone mumbling genuine words of thanks as they stared towards the VIP area.
A few seconds later, her bright smile returned.
"Now, enough of that, let’s get to explaining this event properly, shall we?" She winked before pointing at the Mana screen above her.
"Now, I’m sure many of you have some ideas on how this is gonna go. But for the benefit of those who don’t, specifically, the cute children, I’m gonna explain it in detail." The Mana screens shifted to show an overhead view of the artificial forest.
"Within this forest contains a myriad of beasts which the students need to hunt in order to gain points. The distribution of points is determined based on the rank of a beast, as well as how the student or students hunted it down. Let’s get a bit more in detail." The screens shifted again to show what looked like a scoring system.
Novice Rank Beasts — 10 Points Minimum.
Solo Kills — 25 points.
Group kills — 10 points divided by each participant.
Apprentice Rank Beasts — 30 Points Minimum
Solo Kills — 50 points.
Group Kills — 30 points divided by each participant.
Adept Rank Beasts — 100 Points Minimum.
Solo Kills — 140 Points.
Group Kills — 100 Points divided by each participant.
Osho read through it and was surprised, mostly due to how there were Adept rank beasts within the simulated forest that could be killed, and judging from the gasps in the crowd, he wasn’t the only one who was surprised.
"Now I know what you lot may be thinking. ’Adept rank beast? That’s insane! Why the sudden change in difficulty from past exams? Could it be due to the beast tide that we are suddenly ramping up the difficulty?’" As if she read their minds, she echoed the questions most of them already had, and Osho saw many nodding along with her words.
"Well, the explanation for that is simple enough. For starters, the Beast tide is part of the reason. After all, they aren’t weak babies anymore, but know what danger is like, and putting them in an exam with the same difficulty as the previous ones would be too easy. But I’m sure many of you, especially the parents, won’t be happy with that explanation, and I will admit, under normal circumstances, the chances of any of them managing to kill an Adept rank beast is slim, even with their now gained experience. However..." She trailed off with a smile.
"Said Adept Rank beasts have been... let’s say ’convinced’, into not using their full strength. Meaning, while they are still powerful, decent planning and a well-synergized team will get the job done. And if that isn’t enough for you." She took out a small bracelet from who knows where and held it up for the Mana screen to display.
It was a simple copy of the original thing, but the purpose was clear as one could see the amount of ’health’ a participant had.
"These bad boys are aptly called protection bracelets. They can read the vital signs of whoever wears them, and once the ’health’ of the person wearing it drops below a certain level, a protective bubble of Mana will activate and shield them from any attacks while they are escorted out of the premises. Moreover, the beasts are limited in how they attack as each one is wearing a collar that can detect intent. The moment said beast tries to go for any vital parts of the body, they get shocked, and therefore immobilized. But don’t think you can take advantage of this by putting yourself in the way of a charging beast so it gets paralyzed for an easy kill, because you also can’t attack it while it’s immobilized, so take note." She chuckled at the faces of the students who thought they’d found a loophole for easy points.
"Now, back to the point system. I’m sure some of you may have questions about it, so let me answer a few obvious ones." She smiled.
"Some of you may be wondering about the group Kills and how the points are divided. Well, worry not. The division of points is based on contributions to the kill. It isn’t equal. So if you find yourself in a bug group and do the most damage while your teammates barely contribute, you get the most points while they get peanuts. And, naturally, the fewer the people in a group, the more points that can be divided between each person." She saw them nod with understanding.
"Now, you might be wondering why there is a minimum point system despite the points being able to be divided based on the number of members in a team and their contributions. Well, this really onky applies to one reason. Say someone fought against a group of beasts and had to retreat, but managed to heavily injure one before doing so, but not also killing it, yet weakening it to the point it can’t really fight anymore. If someone is lucky and stumbles upon such a beast, killing it will naturally be easy. As such, they get the bare minimum number of points as the kill wasn’t difficult due to it not being of their own efforts." Osho nodded to himself slightly.
’So basically, killing beasts I didn’t weaken myself will only get me the bare minimum number of points.’ He summarized. That felt fair, but there was something else that bugged him, something Mira promptly addressed.
"Which brings me to the next thing, and that is kill stealing. I’m sure many of you are wary of it, and I’m sure many of you plan to do it. So I will say it right now: Kill stealing isn’t viable. If you intentionally wait for someone or a group to weaken a beast before swooping in and killing it. The point still goes to them while you get nothing, so it is a fruitless venture." There were collective sighs of relief, though a few people seemed disappointed. Which is why her next words made everyone perk up.
"However." She brought up another bracelet. This one had a simple counter on it.
"This bracelet counts the number of points a participant has amassed during this entire examination. And if you can snag it from them and keep it on you until the exam ends." She smiled sweetly.
"Their points are yours."
