Chapter 88: Won’t Be Long Now
Won’t Be Long Now
Compared to the practical exam, the written exam didn’t take that much effort to organize.
In comparison, the Practical required a bit more effort to organize effectively.
It was being held on the south side of the Citadel in a large open space called the Old Parade Grounds. It was old because a new place had been made some time later, causing it to become more of a recreational area as well as a spot for events to be held, like the entrance exam.
It was a large field that was about 210,000 square meters. Typically, it was just vast with a lot of grass and some trees scattered here and there.
Now, though, it was currently being tended to by a large number of people as it was being prepared in advance for the exam
The place that had a few trees was now resembling a small forest with large trees across its area, each one having been made by Beast Tamers who had beasts possessing the nature affinity. It was being repressed to suit the needs of the exam. Moreover, around it was a small wall that looked to be made up of many parts, and anyone who knew a bit would know that these were shield generators. When the exam started, a barrier would be erected to prevent things like stray attacks from flying out of the area.
This was important because farther away, large grandstands had been installed. Why? Because this would be an event that could be viewed by the citizens of the Citadel live.
Unlike the written exam, there wasn’t much to hide for the Practical exam as it was common knowledge of what it would be about, and that was wilderness survival.
The place would be filled with beasts that had been kidna- employed to help with the exam, and the score one got would be dependent on the number of beasts they managed to subjugate, how they subjugate them, and the time taken to subjugate them.
There were a lot more intricacies to the entire event, but that would be explained when it actually started.
Some ways away from both the shield generators and the grandstands, a control room had been built. This would be where most of the tech stuff would be controlled and overseen, and right now, there was a singular technician inside.
"Everything seems to be working accordingly." He thought as he continuously fiddled with some switches and knobs, ensuring everything was working as intended.
"Hey Gary, the boss says your shift is over. Go take a break." One of his colleagues walked past the entrance and said in passing.
"Alright, just gotta do a few more things." He mumbled as he continued his work.
Unknown to him, a thick, black sludge-like substance somehow seeped in through the vent on the wall and started slowly moving towards him.
"Done." He wiped his brow and turned to leave when he froze and saw the black sludge.
"What... the?" Confused and wary, he moved to go around it and call a cleaner. However, as soon as he lifted his foot, the thing jumped at him faster than he could react. It landed on his face just as he yelped and fell back.
Shockingly and disgustingly, it started rushing into his face through all the orifices on his face, and he couldn’t even cry out as his mouth was clogged.
On instinct, he tried to summon his beast, but his body twitched and went limp, just as the sludge fully entered him.
His body was still for a moment, then it started to spasm as though he was having a seizure, his limbs moving and twisting in odd ways before, then at once, it stopped.
Then he sat up straight, almost in a robotic fashion as his face was devoid of all emotion. It twitched briefly, and the whites of his eyes turned pitch black for a moment before returning to normal, and he smiled.
He stood up and dusted himself just as the colleague who walked past before returned and peeked through the door.
"Dude, you know how the boss doesn’t like it when we work overtime." He said without amusement and ’Gary’ rolled his eyes.
"I was just finishing up." He grabbed a side bag and slung it over his shoulder before giving the colleague a look that said ’happy?’
The man snorted.
"Yeah, yeah." ’Gary’ walked over and patted his shoulder as he walked past him.
"You’re always so uptight. Anyways, anything good for lunch this time?" They started walking.
"Meh, just the usual. I’m thinking of skipping."
"Probably for the best. Didn’t your wife pack you some food?"
"Yeah, well, I kinda ate it already."
Unknown to the colleague, a small bit of black sludge was slowly moving on his shoulder towards his ear.

’I’d rather fight the stupid Harbinger again.’ Osho thought as he rubbed his temples for the umpteenth time.
The sun had set some time ago, and everyone was currently working on their third and last paper.
If before the mood was filled with anticipation and anxiety, it was filled with tiredness and the strong desire to go home and sleep.
Even with his Apprentice rank processing power, writing an exam for basically 11 hours and having to constantly use theories and formulas for different topics while under a timer could only be described as headache-inducing.
Osho wasn’t struggling to answer the questions per se, but some of them required formulas and long calculations to be answered, and he’d done so many of those that he’d lost count.
As for Gale, the bird looked to be on the verge of passing out, his eyes unfocused as he had practically fried his brain trying to understand what Osho was doing. He helped a bit in the beginning, but the bird barely knew how to construct proper sentences. Needless to say, he had tapped out early on.
As for their Supervisor, Mrs Jocelyn, that woman was a different kind of beast.
She hadn’t moved an inch from he spot she had been standing on from the beginning of the exam, and she didn’t look even the least bit tired or weary.
Moreover, her Phantom was still using its clones, as Osho decided to call them, to inspect and check for any signs of malpractice, but there had been none of surprisingly.
He looked at the time and saw that he had 45 minutes left and four more questions to answer.
’Okay, finally stretch.’ He hyped himself while also using Mana to cool down his brain a little bit as he dove into the remaining questions to answer them as best as he could.

"Osho, I’m tired... give me food..." Ellie said while reaching up to him with a trembling hand, looking extremely pitiful.
Osho looked at his girlfriend and sighed. Ordinarily, he’d make a snarky comment, but he wasn’t in the mood to. Also, he’d already eaten his food during the second break, so he truly had nothing else to give her.
"Young Lady, you mustn’t have such a countenance in public." For the first time, Osho didn’t jump out of his skin due to being surprised by Ellie’s shadow guard as he had already notived him via his Mana sense.
The girl huffed and got up while dusting herself, Sugil sound asleep while loosely wrapped around her neck.
"So, how do you guys think you did." Osho asked, mostly directing the question to the other three who just looked dead. They didn’t have the same Apprentice rank brains as him and Ellie, so the exam took a far bigger toll on them.
"I don’t... even wanna think... right now." Kurt said, who looked like he’d was about to fall asleep while standing.
"I’ve never written more words in my life..." Irene said with a dazed look in her eyes.
"School is a bitch." Sam said as she constantly rubbed her temples.
"All valid reactions." Osho nodded and stretched before looking up.
The moon was full that night.
"Are you ready to go?" Mrs Jane walked over to them and Osho just nodded.
Mrs Jane returned the nod and started walking towards where her driver was, expecting Osho to follow.
Osho went to Ellie and gave her a brief kiss, ignoring the stare from her guard as he was openly affectionate with her.
"See you."
"Yeah. You better be prepared."
"I should be telling you that."
The two of them parted, and Osho quickly reached the car where Mrs Jane was already inside.
He went to the other side and got in, and he car started moving.
"So how was it?" Mrs Jane asked.
"Tiring." Osho replied curtly.
"You know that’s not what I meant."
"It went well enough." He relented.
"How much do you think you’d get out of a hundred?" She pressed, and Osho held his hands in an X shaped.
"Not answering that. I’d much rather not jinx anything. Besides, the universe seems to have a habit of proving me wrong whenever I think I did well." He said with a scoff, and Mrs Jane stared at him weirdly.
"What do you mean? You’ve passed every single exam I’ve seen you write as far as I’m aware." Osho nodded gravely.
"Yeah. And before I got my grades for any of them, I never proclaimed that I did well before I saw the result." The two of them stared at each other for a few seconds before Osho snorted a laugh, and Mrs Jane cracked a small smile.
After a while, the two of them fell into a comfortable silence.
Finally. Mrs Jane asked.
"How are you feeling for the Practical exam? Will you perform as well as you can or try and stay low-key?" Osho rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, none of that ’making everyone underestimate me from the beginning’. I’m not gonna show all my cards in the beginning, but I sure as hell won’t act cowardly throughout it all." Mrs Jane seemed surprised.
"Uncharacteristically wilful of you. Are you sure Ellie isn’t rubbing off on you?" Osho scoffed at the jab.
"What’s that supposed to mean?" He half-demanded, but Mrs Jane just smiled mysteriously, but inwardly, she let out a small sigh.
’Good to know her still has a bit of a childish side in him.’
