Chapter 64: 3V1
3V1
"Sir, the preparations for the first phase of the plan have been completed." Sarah told Major Thompson, who nodded.
"Good, instruct the teams to slowly move out of there. Meanwhile, have we given the asset the things he requested?" He asked, and Sarah nodded.
"Yes, he received them not long ago, be asked for some privacy, and we decided to give it to him. He said he would be done in a few hours." She explained, and Major Thomposm nodded again, pleased by the speed.
"Alright, return to your post." The woman saluted and quickly went back to recording anomalies as per her job description, while Major Thompson continued to observe the battlefield.
Several hours had passed since the battle first began, and the sun was starting to set. Not that they could see it due to it being obscured by the thunder clouds, but the already dim lighting of the area turned even dimmer as a result, and visibility dropped considerably.
As such, the soldiers wasted no time activating the night vision function on their helmets. Others used Mana to enhance their vision. Some did both.
The flames from before still raged, so while it wasn’t perfect, the visibility wasn’t completely removed.
’Phew~.’ Fredrick let out a turbulent breath as he backed away from the makeshift wall that was already on the verge of collapsing. By now, the number of ants had been cut down to a number where they were no longer too threatening, and the normal combatants could handle them without much issue.
No, the issue came from the three Expert ranked ants that had now deemed their presence necessary as they swiftly approached the wall.
For all his confidence, Fredrick did not have a great amount of surety on whether or not he could handle three Expert ranked beasts on his lonesome.
One was a certainty, two was difficult but manageable, but three? Now, that was difficult to estimate.
In a situation like this, retreating would be the best option. Yet, for some reason.
’I kinda wanna try it.’ He thought as he brandished his spear. The surface of the weapon was slick with blood, some of it not even red, a testament to the number of creature’s he’d slain so far, and right now, he wanted to add the blood of three Expert ranks to that.
With a calm command to Hydro, the Beast stopped supplying the ice wall with Mana, and the effect was almost immediate as the thing lost its integrity and collapsed into countless ice shards a moment later.
At the same time, the two of them started to rush forward.
Fredrick felt that many people were staring at him from behind. He couldn’t gauge the emotions of most since they didn’t have any ill intentions towards him, but the ones he could gauge held a morbid hope that he would be killed in this fight, which made him sneer behind his helmet.
’Watch as I perform more and more feats. I want you lot to be scared, especially for when I come for you.’ He thought before returning his attention back to the three ants.
The three of them were, unsurprisingly, large. They were all about the size of a pickup truck, and the gaps in their exoskeletons glowed slightly as they moved towards him. It seemed like they, too, had recognised him as a threat that needed to be taken out immediately.
Now, in a situation like this, Fredrick wasn’t dumb enough to engage any of them in a one on one. He was skilled, but facing off an Expert ranked beast using his bare body was just stupid, unless the gap between them wasn’t that large. Because again, while he was an expert ranked beast tamer, the difference in strength between himself and an actual expert ranked beast was quite significant.
Then again, that was the whole point of having a tamer beast, so that they could do most of the heavy lifting.
As soon as they closed the distance, Fredrick slowed down and hung back slightly, allowing Hydro to get ahead and throw the opening attack.
Three orbs of highly compressed water appeared before shooting out as thin beams that aimed to slice through the ants. The ants felt the threat from these beams and wasted no time in dodging, their limbs taking them in other directions other than the path of the beams.
But like before, Hydro made each beam slice across the battlefield and aim for the ants, but these ones weren’t completely stupid.
Walls of earth that had no doubt been enhanced by Mana rose to protect each ant, the beams of pressurised water cutting deep into them but failing to find purchase.
’Earth affinities, huh? That makes sense.’ Fredrick noted as he commanded Hydro to fired water spears over the walls, and the beast did just that.
Dozens of spears of condensed water appeared in the air and soared over the walls, but they found no purchase as they simply struck the ground. The ants were nowhere to be seen.
Fredrick’s eyes immediately sharpened, and he focused on his Mana sense. It didn’t take him long to sense three presences moving beneath the ground, however...
’Big mistake.’ He thought as he swiftly retreated from where he was standing. Not long after doing so, the ground where was cracked and light shot out before a powerful explosion erupted, the shockwave pushing him back as he landed over a hundred meters away.
He didn’t bother shielding his face as his helmet protected his face. Instead, he felt a dark sense of amusement.
Naturally, the Citadel had preparations in case creatures capable of burrowing underground appeared. They were more landmines, but these ones were deeper underground and didn’t react to the weight of a creature. Instead, they had detectors that sensed if the Mana in the earth around them was shifted unnaturally, which would trigger them, and cause an explosion like the one playing out right now.
Three shrieks of agony rang into the night, drowned by the intense gunfire of the turrets, which just seemed happy to be there.
The creatures quickly came out of the ground once more, their exoskeletons cracked and blown off in many places. However, Fredrick could tell that the damage was largely superficial, and that the ants hadn’t suffered much damage to things like their mobility and overall durability.
Which is why he had Hydro prepare more water jets for them.
The creatures sensed the Mana and quickly erected barriers to protect themselves again, but Fredrick just snorted as they reacted exactly how he thought they would, and instead of the three jets going for each creature, all of them aimed at the wall erected by a single ant, specifically, the one in the center.
They fired and tore through the hastily erected earth wall and pierced into the creature which shrieked in pain, and tried to scramble away, but Fredrick and Hydro were already moving again.
Several water blades appeared and fired at the other ants, which quickly defended themselves, but the purpose wasn’t to injure them, at least, not seriously. Instead, it was to slow them down as he closed in on his target.
The ant, which had gotten injured, had three deep holes in its chest, green blood oozing out as it struggled to regain its balance.
To that, Fredrick had Hydro fire out more water jets, but before the octopus could, he felt a small shift in the earth beneath him.
Without hesitation, he jumped while Hydro lifted himself odd the ground with water.
Not even a moment after doing so, several sharp spikes emerged from the ground where they had been, clearly aiming to impale them.
It didn’t stop there as the spikes shot out from the ground towards the two entities that were still in the air. Fredrick had Hydro aim for the spikes instead of the ants, and he fired his water jets, which cut through the spikes like butter.
Fredrick then spun midair and watercondensed around the tip of his spear before spinning and turning into something akin to a drill.
The muscles in his arm bulged as he drew it back before throwing it with immense force, the spear piercing through the air as it reached the ant at incredible speeds.
Under normal circumstances, such an attack would have had little effect on the tough exoskeleton of the ant, but with said exoskeleton broken in many places, the soft flesh beneath was simply a victim.
The spear hit its back and dug into it deeply, green blood spraying out as the ant shrieked in pain and anger once more.
By now, the other ants had recovered from the previous attacks while Fredrick and Hydro were about to hit the ground once more.
Without his weapon and about to land on the ground, which was quite volatile, things weren’t looking great, but Fredrick was quite calm.
He pulled Hydro back into his beast space, then, just before his feet hit the ground, he said inwardly.
’Splash steps.’ Sveral splashing sounds rung out in an instant, and before most could react, Fredrick was already in front of the injured ant.
The thing clearly hadn’t expected him to move so fast, as such, it was late to react when his beast space opened once more and Hydro emerged with a jet of water which blew through its skull.
