Chapter 55: It’s Time II

It’s Time II

Then came the trembling.

It was faint at first, but everyone here was battle-hardened and knew how to detect minute changes in their environment, so it might as well have been a war cry.

Moreover, it only got worse.

The combined weight of the beast tide started to become stifling, but of the various formations helping the defenders, a few of them had the purpose of dampening the effects of hostile auras, so while heavy, the weight was bearable.

Still, that didn’t make it any less nerve-wracking, and not long after, they started to hear the sounds as well.

The howls, growls, roars, screeches, and the vast cacophony of sounds assaulted their ears and only grew louder.

The barrels of the turrets started to spin and several of the ranged Tamers had their beasts manifest all sorts of ranged attacks, and the melee tamers gripped their weapons while their beasts realized their claws, bared their teeth, and so on.

Then came the movement of the trees. Everyone watched as the trees bent backward, some of the massive things even being snapped and falling as if a massive wave was passing through them, and technically, a wave was passing through, just not one made out of water.

The seconds ticked, and the tension rose with each one.

One

Two

Three

Four

The frontmost shrubbery of the treeline shifted, and a growl was heard.

Five

A dark and sleek body shot out of the tree line, yet before it could get anywhere or even be properly observed, one of the turrets on the ground fired, the bullet cutting through the air like a laser as it smashed into the torso of the creature and completely blew off its upper body.

What remained of it tumbled to a stop as blood and entrails oozed onto the ground.

There was a brief pause, and then more creatures started to break through the treeline, and more shots were fired.

Ten seconds.

For the first ten seconds, dozens of creatures emerged from the tree and raced towards the wall, and none of them made it halfway.

Then, as if a faucet had broken, they suddenly began spilling forth uncontrollably.

Dozens of beasts turned into a hundred and rapidly increased as they surged forward. Just like the reports said, the eyes of each beast were blood red, and black veins ran across their bodies. Their Auras seemed unnaturally high as they spilled forth into the large field that was between the wilderness and the Citadel.

And the Turrets roared.

If before the shots fired were just singles or quick bursts meant to kill without any wastage. Now the automated weaponry was truly starting to ramp up as tracer bullets shot through the air and shredded any beast that was immediately visible.

Fifteen Seconds

The corpses already started to pile up. But strangely enough, the corpses of the beasts that were close to the treeline were dragged back into it by other beasts while others surged forth, their number growing rapidly as the turrets were soon forced to unleash their full firepower.

So far, the beast Tamers hadn’t needed to move just yet.

20 seconds

A large Bull Beast suddenly broke through the treeline, toppling a few trees in its wake. It charged forward haphazardly, crushing a few of its colleagues under its large hooves as the creature was as large as a Semi-Truck. It’s aura blared at the Adept rank.

A few turrets immediately focused theur attention on it, and their bullets immediately penetrated it and drew blood. However, they isn’t go deep enough to kill it, as such, it continued to rush forward like an unstoppable battering ram.

That was until it stepped on a landmine.

It had gotten the farthest out of all the other beast, but that also meant it was the first one to get a taste of the devastation that was the V.L.B (Very Large Beasts) Landmines.

Its hoof struck the ground, and an instant later, a powerful explosion erupted and completely engulfed the beast. Dust, debris, and animal remains flew out as the shockwave smashed into the beasts that weren’t too far away from the bullet, severely injuring and even killing some of them outright.

When the blast faded, all that remained were a few chunks of charred meat in a few meters deep crater.

25 Seconds

On the wall, there were a few individuals who had a special task. They lay on their stomachs and were spread out considerably. Each of them had a beast which possessed some sort of perception skill, allowing them to see vast distances using their bonds.

Some of them simply held advanced binoculars. Acting as spotters to detect any possible beasts that were a significant threat which needed to be eliminated before they got too close to the wall.

As for the ones in charge of doing just that.

"Adept rank Feline type beast. Tiger Variant, seems to possess a shield-type ability and is using it to protect other beasts. Most likely to get closer by resisting the bullets." A spotter reported, and some distance away from them another figure could be seen on his stomach. However, instead of a pair of binoculars, there was a long and futuristic Sniper Rifle in front of them. Circuits filled its frame as Mana ran through it, a specialized armor-piercing round in the chamber.

"Acknowledged." The main said, his eye already looking through the scope as he quickly spotted what the spotter was referring to.

A large silver tiger could be seen running towards the wall, its stripes which were a pale blue glowed, and a similar colored dome surrounded it and about a dozen other beasts that were close to it.

The sniper took a breath and sent a command to his beast, a small flying squirrel that was clinging to his neck.

As soon as the command was sent, it let out a small chitter as its eyes glowed red and a red Aura suddenly covered the soldier. The aura seeped into the rifle, causing the circuits of Mana to turn red as it hummed with power.

He adjusted his shot ever so slightly, a set of contact lenses on his eyes allowing him to accurately calculate and account for things such as wind speed, distance, bullet drop, the speed of his target.

As soon as all the calculations were put in place, he poured his Mana into the weapon. Its frame vibrated as the Mana Circuits started to glow, and the bullet inside began the spin at high speeds from Mana could that were within the barrel.

This entire process was barely a second long, and once it was completed, the Sniper exhaled and pulled the trigger.

The bullet shot out of the chamber with a thunderous BOOM and sailed through the air, leaving behind it a red trail as it reached the Tiger in but an instant.

It struck the barrier which resisted for a brief moment before it was pierced by the bullet. The Tiger sensed something was wrong but was much too slow, and as a result, it the bullet impacted its skull and completely blew off its head.

It moved for two more steps before it collapsed, and the barrier it had erected flickered out of existence. As for the beasts that were within, they were torn apart by the turrets a moment later.

35 Seconds

Two more Landmines went off as more beasts started to make more and more progress, yet the closer they got, the more fire they were under, as such, they were simply being turned into sieves.

The bodies started piling up, and it was clear that the corpses would become an issue if they kept piling up. Something which had been accounted for as well.

Suddenly, more turrents emerged from the ground, closer to the front where most of the corpses were, but their barrels looked different from the others. The reason for which became apparent a moment later.

Bright orange flames spewed out of their barrels and baptized the dead and living in their flames. Naturally, the flames weren’t normal but were fueled by a special flammable substance, which increased the volatility of the flames released. Moreover, they were especially good at breaking down organic matter.

Many creatures let out pained howls as the flames engulfed them and their dead brethren, and in just a short period, there looked like there was a wall of fire that ate away at the frontmost line of corpses.

Once their job was complete, the turrets returned into the ground, and for a brief moment, no beasts proceeded forward as most of them had no way of resisting the vile flames. This gave time for them to reduce a good chunk of the corpses to ash.

45 Seconds

One of the beasts, an Adept rank with an icy blue coat opened its maw and blasted out frigid blue air that washed over a portion of the raging flames, quickly causing them to go out and create an opening for the beasts to start pouring in once more.

As soon as it did this, its head was taken off by another sniper shot.

Beasts quickly poured through the opening it created, but as the space was more narrow, the turrets had an easier time tearing them apart, but the remaining flames were dying down quickly, so this brief reprieve wasn’t gonna last.

Just like that, the first 50 Seconds of the Beast tide had elapsed.
