Since When Could You Do That???
’Alright, let’s get started.’ Osho thought as soon as the exam began.
’Will we find Ellie first?’ Gale asked and Osho nodded. Their first priority was to meet up with the others before they started to hunt beasts, and Ellie was the closest one to them due to the position of her entrance.
Many of the other examinees had already gone off to do their own thing, but some still hung around. Osho noticed a few of them observing him, but none made a move to approach him, which suited him fine
It wasn’t surprising, as not only was he seen interacting with the number 2 seed, but Gale wasn’t exactly trying to hide his aura, so the green undertone was clear for all to see.
In short, they knew he wasn’t a pushover, and none tried to get near him, either.
’Can you scout the area a bit?’ Osho asked as he turned in the direction where Ellie would be and started walking.
Gale chirped and basically vanished from his side and he shot into the air, surprising a lot of those around them.
As soon as he did, Gale shared his vision with Osho, allowing him to see with the insane perception the bird had.
With a nod, he started to jog in that direction.
___
Inside the VIP area, the place was buzzing with activity.
It wasn’t an exaggeration to say most of the high-profile individuals within the Citadel were currently spectating this bout.
That wasn’t all, though, as there were some esteemed individuals hailing from other Citadels who represented beast colleges, beast Tamer organizations, and so on, we’re also watching.
The place had the most comfortable seats, with staff serving beverages to each person and Mana circuits ran through the walls, runes acting to purify the air while increasing the Mana density inside.
The glass that allowed them to watch was one way, so it appeared like a mirror from the outside, but was far more complex on the inside as not only could they see through it, it also acted as a high-definition screen that kept tabs on the most interesting parts of the exams by splitting into different screens.
All in all, the place was one befitting of an area meant for very important persons.
"Quite a few seedlings this year, eh?" Principal Timothy remarked as he observed the screen with a small smile on his face.
By his side, Mrs Jane nodded as she looked at the various screens. Though, her eyes kept gravitating towards a certain spot on the screen. Or two spots, to be specific. The ones where Osho and Ellie were.
The two of them weren’t the only Expert rank Beast Tamers inside as all of them had come for this occasion.
Including Fredrick.
’I feel like I shouldn’t be here.’ He thought as he found himself sitting next to individuals he had only dreamed of being on the same level as in the past.
"What say you? Young Fredrick?" He turned to see Principal Timothy looking at him with a faint smile and relaxed slightly. The man always seemed capable of easing the worries of those he spoke with.
"It’s impressive for sure. I was never one to keep track of the entrance examinations, but just the number of students who are already in the Apprentice rank is surprising." He nodded.
"Indeed. It’s good to see that the generations are growing stronger and stronger as time progresses, and not the other way around." The Principal chuckled.
Closer to the back, Lady Haggai could be seen sitting with a tablet in her hands, her fingers never stopping as she typed. She occasionally looked up at the screen, specifically where Osho was, and nodded to herself from time to time as she made her observations and recorded them.
"You should take a break from time to time." A voice made her pause, and she looked up to see the Citadel Lord looking down at her with a small smile on his face.
"I am taking a break." She answered curtly, and the man sighed.
"You know what I mean. You may not need to rest as much as normal people, but I can’t recall the last time I saw you just sit down and watch something without that tablet of yours. I get you’re passionate, but even YOU need to take a proper break from time to time." The man said with a chastising tone, causing her to sigh as she finally looked up at him.
"I get the feeling you will chase this matter until I relent." She said, sounding a bit annoyed.
"Something you should be all too familiar with." He replied and her eyes twitched, but she just huffed and put the tablet down.
In another corner, Simon could be seen talking with a few ladies, some of them popular actresses and others influential figures in the business world, all of them beautiful.
Simon seemed to be in his element as he spoke to each of them with practiced ease. Completely unlike the awkwardness he seemed to display in prior situations.
In another side, Ellie’s father sat with one leg crossed over the other. He was talking with numerous businessmen, striking deals and modifying already existing ones. But throughout, he made sure to keep an eye on the ongoing event with his Mana sense.
’Beat their asses Ellie!’ His thoughts were quite passionate despite his calm demeanor.
___
It did not take that long for Osho to encounter his first beast.
After a couple minutes of jogging, he slowly came to a stop and made use of his Mana cloaking which he’d recently developed as he lurked near a tree.
A few dozen meters in front of him, a creature lurked.
’Now that is what I call nightmare fuel.’ Osho thought as the giant centipede beast that was at least six meters in length moved across a tree, munching on a poor lizard-like beast that had black lines covering its body.
’Poison? A curse perhaps?’ Osho thought as he observed, naturally not lookinga the creature directly.
It’s aura was black and brown, with a green undertone, so it was at the Apprentice rank as well.
’Should be doable, but no way in hell am I gonna underestimate it.’ Osho thought before asking Gale.
’What do you reckon? Any obvious weaknesses?’ He asked the bird. He’d see a few potential spots himself that could perhaps guarantee a quick kill, but he wasn’t too sur—
’Left side, a few centimeters below the second segment of its body. There is a vital organ I can pierce.’ Osho’s musings were cut short as Gake gave a surprisingly accurate analysis.
’Really? What makes you think so?’ Osho asked with some surprise. He knew Gale had good combat awareness, but seeing him spot a potential till weakness so quickly was a surprise.
’Uh, I can see it.’ Gale just said and Osho blinked.
’Tf you mean you can just ’see it’?’ Osho pressed.
’I just can. Can’t you?’ Gale replied, confused.
’No, I can’t. Can you focus on it?’ Osho asked as he looked through Gale’s eyes.
Sure enough, there was a spot below the second segment of its body that for some reason, Osho could see a pulsing organ. For some reason because, well, this organ was clearly being obscured by the chitin on the centipede. Yet for some reason, Gale could just... see through it.
’Since when could you do this and how?’ Osho asked.
’When I entered Apprentice rank. How? Um, something about nothing being hidden under the sky?’ Gale sounded unsure about the second part himself, but Osho immediately understood that it was related to his bloodline.
’How come I never knew about this before?’ He asked and Gale gave the mental equivalent of a shrug.
’You never asked, and you never shared vision with me when I used it.’ He replied and Osho sighed.
’I guess it isn’t a passive skill. Anyway, you think you can kill that thing?’ He felt Gale’s excitement at the question.
’Of course!’ Osho smiled.
’Then go for it.’
___
"Oh? Seems like the boy is about to make a move." Timothy remarked as his attention along with that of Mrs Jane, Lady Haggai, Simon, and Ellie’s father shifted to the part of the screen Osho occupied.
Fredrick also looked, a bit interested in what could make so many experts focus on a single person, and he got his answer shortly after.
’That thing’s chitin will be hard to break through, will he attack the gaps in the—’ His thoughts were cut short as before he could react, a massive hole was blown through the creature, almost severing it in half as it had been hit by some sort of insanely fast moving projectile.
"What that...!" Fredrick couldn’t help but lose his composure a little bit. What was that speed? Allegations he saw was a single frame of something before the Centipede got annihilated.
He watched as the boy emerged from his hiding spot just as a bird came to hober by his side, chirping victoriously as he stroked its feathers.
Fredrick felt his mouth twitch.
’Seems like we have a few monsters in this batch, huh?’
