Chapter 245: A keepsake for gratitude

Chapter 245: A keepsake for gratitude

VALENCIA’S POV

The wolf turned its head and looked at me. His gaze held a swirl of emotions.

I was mesmerized for a moment. It was almost as if he was trying to tell me he got me, and I gulped before nodding.

I nodded even when I didn’t know what he was trying to tell me, but I guess it worked.

My breathing was already hitched, and seeing the carnal fear in the rogue’s eyes as they looked between the large wolf and me was indeed satisfying and adrenaline-infusing.

Hearing the flap of wings, I noticed Happy flying back into the sky. I realized that if the wolf hadn’t appeared right in time to save me, Happy was ready to reveal himself to the world.

I couldn’t help but feel really lucky to have such people around me who are always ready to protect me through danger and do everything in their power to help me through dangerous situations.

I saw Happy looking at me, and I waved my hands at him to let him know the situation was under control.

The large wolf snarled and bared its teeth toward the rogues, making the rogues immediately step back in fear.

However, he probably wasn’t taking it.

Without wasting a second, he jumped onto the rogues, chasing and killing the remaining four rogues, shredding them to pieces.

I felt a little guilty and bad for the rogues. They probably didn’t want to hurt me that much. Besides, they were only drinking water and ...

’They had the choice to leave you alone. But they saw you were alone and wanted to make use of that opportunity. So don’t feel bad for such scums who brought this upon yourself,’ Aurora comforted me, and I hummed, biting my lower lips.

Once the large wolf was done with his work, he turned to look at me, blood dripping from his snout, and I felt a nerve in my forehead twitch at the sight.

It was both unsightly and weirdly attractive.

And I know it wasn’t the wolf that was attracting me.

It was the blood dripping from its snout and the realization that I would want to drink blood soon and need to step away from this sight that dawned upon me, making me sigh.

"Thank you for saving me. Though I was ready to fight back," I waved the dagger to let him know I didn’t need his protection.

Yeah, I was ungrateful just like that.

"Well, you won’t tell me who you are, so asking you about it is not useful. I have something to do so I won’t be staying. Adios," I said to the wolf before turning around.

However, as soon as I turned, the wolf appeared before me, probably using his werewolf speed.

I squinted my brows, feeling suspicious of his intentions.

He moved his paws on the ground to write something, and I suppressed the urge to roll my eyes.

"You can see, I don’t want to harm you. Trust me," the wolf wrote, and I felt my heart skip a beat.

I nodded at him, and the wolf bobbed its snout up and down before quickly stepping back.

He started writing something, and honestly, rather than annoying me, I was starting to find it a little cute. The way he moved his paws and rubbed it by dabbing on it was so funny.

I waited for him to finish writing as he was writing and wiping repeatedly, making me take a deep breath.

"Look-" I started to tell him I didn’t have that kind of time on my hands to wait here for him to complete his sentence when he stepped back.

I saw what he wrote and couldn’t help but raise my eyes at him.

"Transform," He wrote one single word.

He wanted to show me who he was.

He walked some distance behind the tree. I waited, my heart beating at an increased pace because of nervousness.

Who was this man I have known for so long, and have given me hope to live?

I saw the wolf vanishing, meaning he had transformed into his human form.

I leaned on the tree beside me.

Waiting for the man to make his presence known finally, my brows shot up when I noticed he was wearing a mask.

This has to be some kind of joke.

"Seriously?" I asked, perplexed. The guy chuckled slowly, scratching his head boyishly as if, and I felt my lips twitching.

It’s not every day I meet a shy man like this, especially a man who looks like he fights in rings or something. His physique was indeed good, though not comparable to the beast I am in love with, but still good.

The man walked forward until he was almost before me before he sighed.

"Let me take my mask off," The man said.

’Yes, please,’ I wanted to say sarcastically, his voice strangely familiar.

The man slowly removed the mask from his face, perfectly creating suspense.

I looked at the handsome face before me. I couldn’t recognize it.

But these hazel eyes... His jawline and...

"Tie a cloth on your face," I said, my brows narrowed.

The man raised his brows before smiling.

He pulled a black cloth from his pocket and tied it to his face, making only his jawline and eyes visible.

I stepped back and observed him.

"You... Are you the rogue I met near the Hazel Moon pack who was wounded by a wolfsbane-laced dagger? The one who didn’t want me to treat him because he was a rogue?" I asked.

The man smiled. It was more like a smug.

"Who doesn’t want to be treated, love?" He asked, and I narrowed my eyes.

"Don’t call me that," I retorted.

"Hmm," he hummed.

I sighed.

Why was he following me?

I saved his life at that time, and he got better. What else did he need from me?

"Wait. That scarf. My grandmother’s scarf," I looked at the rogue.

"I will give it to you the next time we meet," he said, and I felt like I had heard these words before.

"Have we met before?" I asked.

The man just smiled at me before humming.

"People have helped, supported, and stayed with me all my life because they wanted something. I had started thinking that the world was a selfish place. Thank you for making me realize there is still hope in humanity," The man said.

I smiled at him.

"It’s nothing. I would’ve saved --" I started, but the man stepped backward and kneeled before me.

What the hell was he doing?

"Thank you for restoring my hope and saving me that life. I couldn’t express my gratitude at that time because I was shocked that a she-wolf would help a battered and betrayed rogue like me when my own people left my side," The man said before he pulled out the pendant he was wearing and placed it on my feet.

"This is the most important thing to me. I have always been an orphan, but my caretaker told me I had this around my neck when they found me. I give this to you to express my gratitude," The man said.

I shook my head at him.

What the hell was he doing? This exotic pendant was probably their family’s keepsake—a heirloom.

"I can’t take it. This is too precious. Please keep it to yourself. If you want to show me your gratitude, you can help me whenever I am -" I paused when I looked at the pendant carefully.

This pendant...

I looked at it before looking at the rogue before me.

When I was attacked at the airport, I clearly remembered someone had taken me away from the blast sight when I was on the verge of losing consciousness, and the only thing I could see of that person was this hanging pendant.

It couldn’t be a mere coincidence.

No. There is no way that is true.

"Were you the one who saved me at the airport?" I asked.

The man looked down at his hands.

"I apologize for picking you up without your permission and -"

"Are you stupid? You have already paid me back for saving your life. Take this pendant back. This is precious to you," I said.

"Do you not want to take it?" The man looked at me, his eyes beaming with hope, and I felt contemplated.

What am I supposed to do in a situation like this?

He was giving me this after thinking through things.

But it was so precious, probably the only thing that belonged to his parents.

I sighed and was about to speak when we heard some rushed steps. The man looked up at me, his emotions immediately changing.

"This pendant is not the only thing you have taken from me," the man whispered in my ears. His rogue scent strangely did not repulse me, and I looked into his hazel eyes from up so close before he ran away.

I didn’t bother to see where he went and was about to grab the pendant when I realized it wasn’t on my feet anymore.

Feeling the cold metal sensation around my neck, I realized the man had placed the pendant in my neck, and I couldn’t even feel it.

He was indeed a skilled rogue. Shaking my head, I sighed before starting to walk towards the council.
