Chapter 21: The knight for me

VALENCIA’S POV

I ran as fast as I could without giving up on the fact that I wasn’t a normal human. I won’t be lying if I say I was still in disbelief at what my wolf did.

How could she?

’What can I say? I am already busted this time. However, if given a chance, I’ll show you again how it’s done,’ Aurora smirked, probably proud of her work.

The nerve of this fake-wolf! How can she be so relaxed? Does she not know that my death would result in her death too? Or does she think she is some kind of immortal soul?

’You are not going to die, Cutie,’ Aurora grinned, calling me one name that I don’t like her calling.

Without wasting my time on this stupid useless half-cat-half wolf or God knows what, I kept running towards the forest.

A sane person would run towards a crowded place when followed by so many men, but for people like me, a forest was a good hiding place.

And now that I was finally in my home, I could maybe use a trick or two to confuse them, right? With that thought in mind, I quickly climbed the tree before jumping on another one, hiding behind large trunks, thanks to this forest that is home to one of the largest trees around here.

Crossing my legs around the branch, I bent my body towards the ground and hit the area right under the ear and neck of the last man who was looking for me with others.

Seeing his body going limp, I didn’t waste a single second and tied his hand to the long elongated stems before jumping on the tree, making the stem I was sitting on pull his limp body upwards.

One down. Six more to go.

’Are you seriously going to use your training on humans when that beta is on our tail?’ Aurora asked with a proud smile.

She knew the answer to her question.

’Last time I checked, I stopped letting some alpha and beta decide the fate for me,’

I hid behind the trunk when one of them suddenly turned in my direction.

What else did she expect of me? Was there a beta coming to save our life?

A smirk appeared on my face when the last man stumbled on the ground.

I repeated the same process with the second guy, sending him to the tree.

"Hey! You wanted to catch me, didn’t you? Drop those guns and let’s see if your big muscles have the power to catch a girl like me," I walked from behind the men, catching their attention before I signaled my friend to leave.

With one last roar, he left, a little disappointed, I must say.

I sighed before looking at the five men, thinking about how to deal with these people. I didn’t want any bloodshed, especially when it belonged to humans.

My reason was simple. I wanted to live a clean life here.

Honestly, now that I think about it, it feels like from the moment I saw that beta, things have been going haywire.

"We asked you politely to get inside the car, but you had to run away and throw a tantrum, no? Huh, why do these women never listen? Is it so hard? Is your brain in your knees?" The man asked me before spitting on his left, stuffing the gun back into his back pocket.

With the gun gone, I wanted to try to run away, but what if they pulled it out again? I can’t risk Karma’s life with mine.

Besides, even I would like to know who this guy is who has sent so many men to get me.

Feeling someone’s presence behind me, I thought my jaguar, Karma, was back, and I exhaled helplessly.

"Karma, I told you to-"

I stopped talking when I smelt it.

"What’s going on here?" I heard his deep velvety voice.

My hands clenched by my side inadvertently, knowing all too well what was coming for me. He would surely blame me for this and -

"Who the heck are you? We have no business with you. We want this girl. If you want to live, you better fuck off," One of the men said.

"That’s not the answer to my question. What is going on-" The beta turned to me, but before he could complete his sentence, the man walked ahead.

"We don’t have the entire day to waste -"

I watched in surprise as Shadow placed his hand right on the man’s face, making him gasp and struggle, his eyes not moving away from my face as he threw that goon away.

"What’s going on?" He asked again, stepping ahead, this time his eyes turning a little darker.

I averted my gaze, my heart drumming in my chest as he looked at me with that piercing gaze that wanted to look directly into my soul.

"I don’t know who they are. They just started following me out of the blue and have been asking me to go to their boss with them," I admitted.

He would scold me for getting into trouble with human goons. That’s exactly what I thought, but to my surprise, he held my hand, his touch making a shiver run down my spine as my heart skipped a beat.

My gaze moved to his hand that was gripping mine before I looked up at him.

What was he doing? Was he really taking my side and going to act against humans, breaking laws with me? Many questions started to arise inside my head.

"Stay behind me," he pulled to make me stand behind himself as he stood in front of me.

And once again, my heart skipped a beat at his muscular form. The evening sunlight was shining brightly across his shoulders and I won’t exaggerate, but he definitely looked like some knight in shining armor at that time.

’Isn’t this the first time someone is standing protectively of us? Even when he is our enemy?’ Aurora reminded me, and I looked at the man who was taking down the human goons one by one.

The little girl inside me started to surface. The adrenaline rush has always been so high in such situations that I don’t even realize I get scared too.

And now that he was fighting them, I realized those guns had scared me for a second. Because as a rogue werewolf, I didn’t have the authority to act against them if I didn’t want to get caught.

My surprise soon turned from shock to horror when he started breaking the arms and legs of the men.

"Hey... Hey..." I quickly held his hand to pull him away, afraid he would really hurt those humans badly

"Calm down," I said, forcing him to look at me.

"I am fine," he said, his dark eyes making me step back subconsciously.

"Are you okay?" He asked, noticing my hesitancy, and I nodded softly.

I saw him lifting his hand as if he was about to touch my face, but before he could do that, we collectively heard the rushed sounds of footsteps.

"Valencia! Phew... Thank God," I saw Aiden rushing towards me with his three bodyguards.

Before I could say anything, he engulfed me in a bear hug, almost making me stumble back, his hands wrapping around me tightly.

"God, you have no idea how scared I was," he whispered.

"I am -" I paused when my gaze met with Shadow’s.

He wasn’t smirking this time. He was just looking at me as if waiting for my reaction.

And what reaction could I really give at the time when I felt his hand gripping mine and pulling me towards himself, away from Aiden?

I looked into his eyes, shocked.

"Mr. Shadow-"

"Let’s go," The beta didn’t give me another chance before he bent and picked me in his arms, surprising everyone.

’What the hell?’ For the first time, my wolf mimicked my reaction and thoughts.
