Chapter 203: A lily and a note
VALENCIA’S POV
Some stories are so tragic.
But I can’t help but blame the girl even when she was the one who was killed.
Maybe in her moment of excitement, she forgot the basic rules of their pack. Still, after listening to the story, I wonder if this amazing love story and bond could’ve been secure and protected if the girl had crossed the boundaries completely.
It was the rule of the pack to stay in the area.
They have been living in those old-built houses for the same reason: They can’t leave the pack, and the forest spirits help them maintain everything.
If the girl had exited the boundaries completely, no one would’ve followed her and broken the laws for the second time to anger the forest spirits.
This way, she would’ve gotten to live, and conclusively, everything would’ve turned out to be great.
Then again, life doesn’t work as we think and want it to be. If I feel that way, maybe if I had known about my birth or had told the council about all the bullying, I wouldn’t have to go through all that shit either.
"Hello, Valencia, are you there?" Tory asked, and I hummed.
"What are you thinking?" He asked me, making me press my lips into a thin line.
"How many rogues have we collected so far?" I asked him instead.
I am sure he needed clarification with my choice of question.
"308," Tory said, and I raised my brows.
They had gained quite a lot in this short span. What were they doing to lure so many rogues towards them? I narrowed my brows.
We needed to talk about this but now wasn’t the time.
"Will you be able to handle them alone, without any help?" I asked.
I heard Tory inhale a deep, shaky breath.
"Are you telling me we won’t do anything to save Theo?" Tory asked.
I could feel aggression in his voice and knew what he was thinking.
I shook my head at him.
"I never said that did I? You aren’t going to do anything about it. I will bring him back if he is alive by the time I reach there, but I need you to stay out of it and alive," I said.
Tory snarled at me.
"Have you lost your mind? I called you so you could give me some ideas on how to tackle this situation, not because I wanted you to go and save him. Do you think Theo will be happy to know you risked your life to save him?" Tory asked me.
He wouldn’t be.
Among the first members of the team I started to gather, Theo was the most protective of me. I used to think that it was because he saw me as his sister, because he was an alpha in general, or because he took this ranking system seriously, as I was his boss.
But after hearing the complete story, it looks like it was all because he didn’t want me to die either. He was afraid of losing me too. Maybe he saw me as his sister, but he kept me in high regard, and the thought of what he went through ached my heart.
Seeing your mate murdered before you and not being able to do anything about it was both agonizing and traumatizing.
It was even more painful than a rejection.
"He won’t be happy, but I already told the people of the Caribbean’s Den Pack I would be there to save Theo. I didn’t know the problem, so I called him first," I told Tory.
The sound of something breaking came from the other side.
"You don’t get it! I can’t lose you too!" Tory shouted through the call, and I hummed.
"Well, the feeling is mutual, Tory. I can’t lose another capable man on my team. I will be the one taking action. Just trust me, will you?" I asked before ending the call.
I looked at the setting sun, feeling unsure.
There were so many things I needed to take care of.
First, I will have to come up with an excuse to tell Alpha Maverick why I was leaving for a couple of days. Then, I’ll have to ensure Jonathan and Dylan are on my side and don’t open their mouths in front of Maverick.
Since I was going to the forbidden area, it differed from going to coral regions to meet the Lycans. I would have to inform Dylan beforehand, and informing him about this meant also telling him why that man was important to me.
’Or you can just run away and let them find you,’ Aurora said.
I looked at her. The idea was pleasing. There was no doubt about it, but I didn’t want to worry about them again.
I mean, it’s about time I started acting a bit maturely and stopped playing these chasing games. I wasn’t just a council spy or a random rogue anymore. Maverick claimed me as his before everyone, and they saw me clearly.
Besides, with the lurking rogues on my tail, I didn’t want to end up in trouble again before reaching the place to save Theo.
I have to find a way to get Dylan on my side.
Closing my eyes, I sat there for some time, thinking about everything.
After some time, my phone vibrated with an incoming call, making me open my eyes.
Seeing Dylan’s number, I smiled.
This guy surely has placed some kind of chip on me that he feels whenever I am sad.
"Hello?" I said, looking at my nails.
"How are you feeling? Has the heating phase ended? I just had this feeling that you wanted to talk to me and couldn’t help but call you," Dylan said, a hint of hesitancy in his words.
"I am feeling much better, and yes, the heating phase has ended. About talking to you... I was about to call you, indeed. It’s something important," I said awkwardly.
Dylan hummed. I could feel he was curious, but he was giving me enough time to speak about it.
"Actually, it’s related to something prohibited, and only you can help me with this. I..." I stopped speaking when my gaze landed beside me.
There on the bench beside my legs was a lily over a note.
I was sure there was nothing on the bench when I saw it. Though I was distracted, I wasn’t that much out of it to have not noticed it.
It only meant someone placed this here when I had my eyes closed. But who was it? And why the hell did I not feel anyone’s presence or scent?
I removed the lily from the note and opened it, freezing in my place at its contents.
"You look troubled. Want my help?" The note said, and I knew it was from the same person who threw that arrow at us.
The handwriting was awfully similar.
I looked around to see if I could see anyone suspicious or familiar, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find anyone.
"Hello? Valencia, are you there?" Dylan’s loud voice came through the call, and I gulped, unsure if I should tell him about it.
This man, whoever he was, was surely daring.
For him to dare to come here, in a park right before Maverick’s building, was a sign he wasn’t afraid of anything or anyone.
But the main question was, what did he want from me?
