Chapter 156: Fatal attraction brings fear

Chapter-156

VALENCIA’S POV

"Give that to me," I said, snatching my phone back before he could turn it and read its contents.

Maverick looked at me with a neutral expression. He didn’t say anything, but the hurt emotion in his eyes as I lunged at him to grab my phone was evident.

I know he must have thought I was hiding something from him, and though it was true, how was I supposed to tell him that it wasn’t about any man?

"You can’t see a lady’s messages like this. We were talking about undergarments," I hushed while looking at Dylan and Carl to make him believe I was afraid they would hear it.

Maverick’s expression immediately calmed, and he sighed before shaking his head at me.

"Are you going somewhere tonight?" He asked, and I nodded, telling him I planned to go clubbing with my friends.

He hummed before flicking my nose.

"So there are no chances of having some alone time with you?" He murmured under his breath, the gentleness in his voice making me feel even guiltier than before.

"Well, did you want to order something particular?" I asked, as he had walked to me in the middle of the discussion.

Maverick shook his head and backed me into the kitchen, hiding me away from Dylan and Carl’s view.

"I just wanted to have some time with you, look into your eyes without you averting your gaze because you are afraid people would find out about my obsession with you," Maverick said, his words making my heart skip a beat.

How can a man be this dangerous and so gentle simultaneously? He never showed his evil side to me, and I wasn’t one to believe rumors without seeing things in person, but this man has been the only one who has made me believe in every rumor about him without seeing things.

And even after knowing how bad he was for me, how terribly things would end between us, and how it might turn us into enemies, I was still here, standing between his arms, looking into his eyes.

Fatal attraction. That was how I would describe it.

"You set my heart on fire, and the blazing flames have started to reach my mind and melt my thoughts toward you," Maverick whispered before he placed his forehead on mine and took a deep breath.

It was getting hard.

For me, and for him too. He snuck his hand around my waist sensually before pulling me close to himself.

Our bodies weren’t touching, but I could feel the heat seeping from his body, engulfing me in its warm embrace and making me want to lean into his touch.

This was terrible. The more the realization of how wrong this was was setting into my heart, the more attracted I was feeling towards him.

"Maverick," I whispered softly. He hummed, still breathing heavily against my neck, and I gulped.

"You know I am a council member and unavailable at the moment because of the contract we signed with the council before starting a service. Yet you are moving ahead with your emotions. Would you-" I gulped, my heart pounding against my chest as I weighed the consequences of what I was going to ask him.

However, I still wanted to know how bad things were going to be.

’Don’t do it, Val. Don’t do it to yourself. You know what the answer is going to be. Don’t,’ Aurora warned me.

I know she was just trying to protect me from the upcoming pain, but I wanted to see if there was any chance I could tell him the truth about my identity without him flipping off. I wanted to know if he would allow me to explain myself.

"First, I don’t care what kind of contract you signed with the council. Do you think I am in any position to control my feelings anymore? I am obsessed with you, Mitsuki. I am attracted to you to the point that I want to have you by hook or crook. Are you getting my point? Now, ask your question. Would I what?" Maverick said.

These words were supposed to make me feel good, and I am sure if it had been any other time, I would have blushed, but not now when I knew my next question was going to blow everything off.

With a deep, shaky breath, I tried to create some space between us that Maverick didn’t allow me to have.

Left with no choice, I asked the question in the same intimate position, not daring to look into his eyes.

"Would you have felt the same for me if I was a rogue?" I asked, my breath hitching as I waited for his response.

Maverick stepped back from his place, removing his hand from around me.

I looked down at my feet, unsure what else I expected. This was more than enough of the answer that I needed. He probably didn’t want to hurt me with his words, and that was why he wasn’t saying anything -

I could not complete my thoughts because, at the next moment, his words shattered all my speculations.

"If you were a rogue, Valencia, I promise I would’ve made you regret why you told me the truth every second of your life. If you were a rogue and breaking the rules in my territory to that level, I would’ve made you wish for an easy death," Maverick said.

He grabbed my chin and forced me to look into his eyes, his dark eyes looking at me as if he was looking directly into my soul and trying to find out if what I was asking him was because I was one for real.

My heart was still pounding hard against my chest as I looked into his dark hazel eyes that looked like they were almost turning black from suppressed anger.

"Believe in every rumor you hear about me tearing up rogues, Valencia. I don’t play when it comes to them. If they call me a monster, they call me one for a reason," He said, massaging my chin with his thumb.

"Do you get it?" He asked me, and I nodded, a little fear creeping into my body.

"Good. You should be thankful that you are a council member, not a rogue. And let’s not talk about this matter anymore. I don’t want you to involve yourself with that kind of species, even in the wildest imaginations," Maverick said.

I didn’t like how he was generalizing all the rogues as bad.

"But why do you do that? Not all rogues -" I started, but he pinched my chin, making my eyes tear up at the pressure he was executing.

"I said that’s enough about them. You are not one, and that’s all that matters," He bent to my eye level before pecking my chin.

"I am sorry for this, my love, but I hope you understand that my hatred towards them runs deep into my veins, and I won’t let go of anyone who belongs to the species that took everything away from me," Maverick said, and I nodded in understanding.

He pecked my cheeks before pecking the corner of my lips.

"Come soon," He whispered before standing straight and leaving.

As soon as he left, I breathed heavily, finally releasing the breath I had been holding from the moment he pinched my chin.

It wasn’t painful at all. It was just a little pressure, but what was painful were his words, and my resolution to hide this truth from him until I left the area only increased.

This was indeed a fatal attraction I felt for him.
