Chapter 86: Terms And Conditions
Without a second thought, I lunged out of Dante’s arms, pulling a knife out of Teddy at the same moment.
I would be going in blind (HA!), but I was 90% certain that I would be able to stab Antoine or, at the very least, the bitch who brought him.
Unfortunately for me, fortunately for them, Dante’s reflexes were quicker than I expected. Once again, his arm snaked around my waist. But instead of simply pulling me to his chest, he picked me up and threw me toward Tank.
Tank, that traitor, never missed a beat. Plucking me out of thin air, he settled me back on his forearm like it was my throne.
"Sorry," shrugged Dante, a smirk on his face as he turned back to Brittney and Antoine. "She gets a bit stabby when she thinks that someone is being mean to me."
"That’s not an excuse," sneered Brittney, her perfect speech wavering for a moment as she turned a glare toward me.
Putting Teddy back in my space so he didn’t get wet from the snow, I shrugged my shoulders and started to clean under my nails with the tip of my knife. "It wasn’t," I answered with a smirk.
"It wasn’t what?" demanded the other woman.
"It wasn’t an excuse. I don’t need one. If I want you to die, then all you can do is just accept your fate. It would make your life so much easier."
Brittney spun around as she looked at Dante, her mouth dropped open and all signs of pretenses gone. It’s too bad, really. I thought she would play the role a lot longer. Get more people on her side and create drama.
Oh well, I guess I gave her too much credit.
"You know that’s not acceptable, right?" she sputtered. Watching her trying to regain her balance wasn’t all that interesting. Did she think that she could seduce Dante again? And then what? Take over the base, making it hers instead?
Or worse, was she going to give it to Antoine?
Ugh, she couldn’t be that predictable, right?
"The lamb does whatever she wants," answered Tank when Dante simply crossed his arms in front of his chest. Soft snowflakes were starting to fall again, and after a day of nothing, the temperatures were beginning to drop again.
Brittney and the men who chose to follow her started to shiver, their teeth quietly chattering while Dante and the rest of us were nice and warm.
"Do we have hot chocolate?" I asked suddenly. Today seemed to be a perfect day for hot chocolate.
"Probably," answered Dante. "I’ll have someone make you a cup when we get inside."
"With mini marshmallows?" My eyes widened at that idea. I had only seen pictures of hot chocolate before. Père wasn’t one to indulge and it never really got cold enough to warrant hot chocolate.
But I always wanted to try it.
"Anything you want, it’s yours," nodded Dante as he turned away from Brittney to caress my cheek.
"In case you didn’t notice," sneered someone behind Antoine. "An EMP hit us weeks ago, knocking out all power and electronics. Where do you think you are going to get chocolate? Let alone hot chocolate. It’s better to be humble and let us in than cocky. And your bitch needs to learn her place."
Dante paused for a second before slowly turning around. "Oh?" he murmured low, narrowing his eyes on the man who spoke out of turn. He was only wearing a pair of shorts and a wife-beater, so it wasn’t surprising that he was so cold.
But I didn’t know that being cold could make you stupid as well.
Pulling out a gun from the inside of his coat, Dante killed the man without a second thought.
"See," I smiled at him. "There was still plenty of time to kill someone today. Good job!"
Brittney screamed like she had never seen someone die before. I would have to give her acting a 5/10, but Antoine seemed to have bought it. Wrapping his arms around her, he pulled her into his chest as he glared at Dante over her head.
"Let us in," he snarled. "I protected your family when you turned tail and ran; it’s the least you can do."
"You never actually told us where his family is," I pointed out.
"They died," sighed Brittney, wiping away her crocodile tears. "When we ran from N City, they were caught by some zombies and killed."
I didn’t know if Dante could see the hidden smile on her face as she spoke, but I was willing to put money on the fact that she threw Dante’s family to the zombies just out of spite.
"Too bad," I murmured. "They would have easily bought your way into the Dragon’s Lair. Oh well, good luck finding someplace warm to spend the night."
"Please," begged one of the men behind Brittney, dropping to his knees. "I’m begging you. Please. Let us in."
Dante was about to open his mouth, but I quickly cut him off.
"Is that a wish?" I asked, cocking my head to the side. "Dante told you that this place was magical. Maybe wish for it and see if it happens?"
"I would give my soul to come inside and be safe for a single night. Please. I wish to be safe for a single night."
The poor man was absolutely desperate, and I could practically taste it in the air.
’Deal accepted,’ purred the voice inside my head, just as smug and happy as I was.
The gate opened on its own without anyone touching it, and Brittney and her men simply stared at it.
"Well?" demanded Dante. "Aren’t you coming in?"
"I wish for a hot meal," called out another man as he pushed past Brittney and raced inside.
"I wish for a king sized bed with really soft sheets and a heating pad!" screamed out another, close on the heels of the first man.
One after another, the men raced inside, calling out wishes that were granted almost as soon as they uttered the words. I could practically hear the ringing of a cash register as more and more wishes accumulated until there were just Brittney and Antoine left outside.
"I don’t believe in wishes," shrugged the woman as Antoine escorted her into the building. Finally, only the three of us and the guards were outside.
"Are you sure this is smart?" asked Tank, looking down at me.
I shrugged my shoulders. "They set the terms and conditions, not me. And the Devil’s in the details."
