Chapter 83: The Owner’s Return

Chapter 83: The Owner’s Return

Pride gently poked at his split lip with his tongue, tasting his blood. "Gate Keeper," he smirked, poking at the cut. "It’s been a minute."

The man standing in front of the sin simply sneered, his face twisting with disgust as he looked Pride up and down. "It appears that you are no longer as powerful as you once were. How does it feel, Sin? Knowing that you are now no better than the rest of us lowly demons?"

"You’re the Gate Keeper of Hell," chuckled Pride, fixing his suit as he cracked his neck from side to side. "Theoretically, you should be one of the more powerful demons here... after our Lord and Master, of course."

"And yet, people only know about you and your brothers," sneered the man, his reptilian eye blinking both lids before turning back to normal. "But tell me, where is your Lord and Master now? You have no one to watch your backs... it’s no wonder people are out to kill you all."

Once again, Pride simply shrugged his shoulders. "It’s cute that everyone seems to have forgotten how we got to the top of the food chain in the first place. You care so much about what the meat sacks think that you have forgotten your place."

"My place? It’s interesting that you should mention that. After all, I have all my powers at the moment while you rely on a human to top you up. But I wonder... what would happen if other demons... besides you seven were able to take advantage of her? All voices whispering in the darkness sound the same. Maybe, just maybe, there will be new sins. Won’t that be fun?"

Before Pride could respond, the Gate Keeper vanished into thin air, the echoing of his laughter ringing in the throne room.

"That was pleasant," sneered Greed, stepping out of the shadows. "I always hated that guy."

Pride glanced at his brother before sitting down on the middle throne, staring forward at the mirrors.

Last night, Hattie had entered the dreams of the humans around her, something no vessel had been able to do before. Then again, with Hattie, that seemed to be the norm. Wish after wish she granted without anyone knowing it.

And the power flowed into each one of the sins... but it wasn’t enough.

"But as much as it kills me to say it, he does have a point," continued Lust, entering the throne room behind Greed.

"If it kills you to say it, then do us all a favor and drop dead," snarled Pride. He was having a hard enough time as it was, and being punched by someone he considered to be the dredges of society wasn’t helping his mood.

"The Devil had been gone for over a millennia," sighed Sloth, pouring himself into his throne. His eyes were closed; the amount of energy it would take to open them was not worth it for him to spend. "And so is Wrath. We are weaker than we have ever been. It’s not surprising that we have targets on our back."

"It’s better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than open your mouth and erase all doubt," purred Gluttony as he took his seat. The mirror in front of him transformed, the glass rippling for a moment before it focused on the object of his obsession.

"Then tell me I’m wrong," shrugged Sloth. "Tell me that there is no way even our allies don’t want us dead at the moment."

"It also doesn’t help that Hattie seems to draw people and demons to her. Hell, I’ve even seen an angel hovering around, sniffing at what is ours," pointed out Lust, his nose wrinkling as he thought of the angel. "If we don’t get more power, then we are going to lose everything."

"If you have an idea, I’m all ears," sneered Pride, his eyes never leaving Hattie’s face. The man beside her accepted something unclean into him, a soul merger in exchange for a wish. But he wasn’t upset about it.

The beast would lay down his life for the object of his obsession, and since that obsession was his Angel, that was just fine for Pride. He would and could protect her in the human realm while the others were trapped in Hell.

And when they got enough power for a soul merger of their own...

They could deal with everything at that point.

He just needed to send a prayer to the Devil for allowing that demon to protect his woman.

"You don’t find it weird that the day Wrath met the Devil, they both disappeared?" murmured Envy as he came out of the darkness behind the thrones. "The only being next to Michael and God who knows the face of the Devil went to earth in search of him and hasn’t been seen since. Do you think he found him?"

"Whatever is going on with Wrath, we are going to have to deal with it later. Right now, we need to find a way to remind everyone here just why we’ve been the top dogs for so long," sneered Pride, rising to his feet.

His brothers copied his motions, coming to stand beside him. "You know, torture is a good way of deterring people from doing something stupid," chuckled Greed, clamping Pride on the shoulder. "And we don’t need to be at full strength to put the fear of the Devil into people."

With a grunt, Pride nodded his head.

The six sins disappeared from the throne room, not noticing the presence hiding behind the curtain.

While the seven thrones of the seven sins were the focal point of the room, no one knew what was hidden behind them on the other side of the curtain. In fact, most people couldn’t even see the curtain...

The sins certainly couldn’t.

The hound watched the six men disappearing with nothing short of contempt on his face. They were meant to be the first line of defense, but they seemed to have forgotten that fact after all this time.

Retreating back into the shadows, his claws clicked on the floor with every step he took. Looking up at the lone throne, he let out a low whine from the back of his throat. Spinning around in a tight circle, he laid down at the foot of the throne and waited patiently for his owner to return.
