Chapter 73: How You Kill It
Dimitri turned his head just in time to watch as two humans had their necks ripped out, blood gushing everywhere as the zombies happily feasted on their flesh.
Shrugging his shoulders, not caring about their deaths, Dimitri tipped his head toward René. "’E be shittin’ a brick right about now," he chuckled. "You’s wanna lend a ’and?"
Ronan snorted as Désiré strolled toward him, one hand in his pants pocket as if he was simply taking a stroll through the park. In his other hand was a baseball bat that they had found in the room, covered in dark red blood and brain matter.
Swinging the bat in a circle, he whistled a cheerful tune as the snow continued to fall around them. "Too busy," smirked Désiré. "’Sides, when does de big man need our help?"
"True," agreed Luca, resting his arm on Ronan’s shoulder as Dimitri, annoyed with the zombie in his hands, ripped off the creature’s head without a second thought. Wiping his hands on his pants, he ignored René’s bellow for help. "I’s think it be about time ’e got out of ’is ivory tower ’n into de real world. Poor Prince gonna ’ave ta get dirty fer a change."
Suddenly, the snow and the zombies completely disappeared, leaving everyone in the navy base looking around in confusion. René, realizing that there were no more threats, stomped over to where the others stood, Alicia hurrying after him, clutching her bleeding arm.
"What was that?" he hissed, fury obscuring his features for a moment as he fought to get himself under control. "We’s needed ’elp. ’Licia got hurt because of you!" Jabbing his finger into Luca’s chest, René was surprised when the other man grabbed the offending digit and bent it backward.
"First," smiled Luca, looking down at René, who had dropped to his knee to prevent his finger from breaking. "We did help. Second... Alicia managed to cut herself with her own knife. Not very smart if you ask me, but then again... you didn’t."
"Vraiment," agreed Ronan, looking the shorter woman up and down for a second with a twisted smile on his face. "You’s be givin’ me second ’and embarrassment. Might wanna step up that train’ yous always talkin’ about."
"And third," hissed Luca, bending down so that he could whisper into René’s ear. "We are no longer your bitches. Good luck with whatever you have planned because you’ll be doing it on your own. As soon as the snow is gone, so are we."
Luca hadn’t meant to ruin the plans they had concocted... but he didn’t think this place would make Hattie happy.
He and the others would head out on their own in order to find Hattie and a place to call home.
René looked up at him, his mouth dropping open as he saw the serious look on Luca’s face. It had never occurred to him that they would leave him. It had always been the seven of them together.
And now, they were destroying everything in their selfishness.
Just as he felt the rage starting to take over, René paused for a moment.
"Just what in the dumb fuckery be dat?!?" hissed Dimitri, seeing the same thing that just caught René’s attention.
Looking forward at the hole in the fence where the zombies had managed to enter the compound, Dimitri couldn’t believe his eyes.
"Is ’dat clowns?" he asked Ronan, never taking his eyes off the things walking toward them. "Was de circus in town before shit ’it de fan?"
The soft sound of laughter and giggles managed to reach the eight people as more and more clowns streamed into the yard.
"No circus ’as dat many clowns," grunted Ronan, cocking his head to the side. One of the clowns copied his motion, cocking its head to the side as if he was looking in a mirror.
"Fuckin’ creepy," grunted Max from where he stood behind Luca. "If dey stayin’, I’m not."
The snow under their feet crunched down with every step of the clown’s oversized red shoes.
"Somethin’ tells me dey ain’t from de cirque," grunted Désiré, nodding his head toward the clown’s hands. "Deir knives be too big fer dat."
’What in the seven circles of hell are they?’ demanded Luca to his demon, never taking his eyes away from the threat in front of them.
"First," announced Greed, speaking to him as he had just spoken to René. "There are nine circles of hell, not seven. And second... someone, somewhere, made a wish, and this was the result."
’Someone wished for these things?’ demanded Luca as the clowns started to pick up speed, their knives up over their heads like they were killers from some B-rated movie.
"Someone wished for no more zombies... this was what the universe came up with instead. You might want to be careful, though. They are a bitch to kill." As soon as Greed spoke, the lead clown slashed down, slicing Alicia through the back as René tried to save her.
The woman let out a long, pain-filled scream as she arched away from the blade. However, her actions just caused the clown to laugh harder; its big red mouth stretched in an inhuman manner.
René, prepared this time, took out his gun and shot the clown between the eyes.
Everything seemed to still as the clowns slid to a stop, the snow causing them to slide slightly as the head clown, the one René had shot clutched its chest. A look of pain crossed its face as blood streamed out through the massive hole in the front and back of its face, mixing with the face paint.
The clown collapsed onto the ground, one hand raised up into the air as if it was trying to grasp something before it, too, fell to the ground. It twitched violently once, its arms and legs spasming in the snow until they stilled.
"Huh," grunted Désiré. "And ’ere me be thinkin’ Ronan was de drama queen."
"He’s dead," grunted René, turning the gun toward the rest of the crowd of clowns. "Fuck off."
The remaining clowns raised their hands as if surrendering as they slowly backed away from René.
Inside of Salvatore’s head, Envy chuckled. "I hate to break it to you... but that’s not how you kill it."
