Chapter 71: No One Will Die... At The Moment
"Why is it so fucking hard to find a meat sack?!?" growled Pride as he stared at the mirror in front of him. Why couldn’t the fucker understand that there were more powerful beings walking the Earth?
If he had asked to be the most powerful human...
Nope, that still wouldn’t work. As much as he might hate to admit it, Pride was no more powerful than the rest of the sins... they were all on the same level when it came down to the nitty-gritty.
And the meat sack couldn’t really think that he could stand a chance against the Four Horsemen if they decided to come calling... right?!?
And there was Demeter’s son... but he wasn’t all that in tune with his Godly half, so maybe Dante could take him in a fight. But why fight if you didn’t have to?
"Probably because you only chose pricks?" suggested Greed, appearing beside him. The two of them watched the stand-off going on in the lounge of the Dragon’s Lair. "To be fair, you are a prick, so it stands to reason that you would pick meat sacks with your personality."
"Like you aren’t just as bad as me," sneered Pride back. "Why hasn’t your meat sack been nearly as frustrating?"
"Did you hear the part where they are pricks? They have enough pride to attract you to them, but that means that they think they don’t need anyone," pointed out Sloth as he appeared on his throne.
Resting his cheek on his fist, his eyes closed, Sloth let out a loud yawn. "Besides, you technically picked our meat sacks, so you really can’t complain."
Pride turned to his brother and sneered. "Don’t you have a nap you can take or something?"
René was the most promising meat sack. He had saved Hattie as a child, and she had become enamored with him. It only stood to reason that he prep the meat sack to be his host; it would have been the easiest transition from her savior to her King ever...
But no.
He had to go out and find a fucking rebirther to ruin everything. The fucking cunt thought that everything had to bend to her will simply because she could remember her last life.
A quarter of the population could do the same thing... Dante could do the same thing... it really didn’t make them the most important person in the world ever.
She should have kept silent about what she knew and shouldn’t have planned to take over the world using René. Now Pride’s plans were all fucked up, and that was making him more than a bit cranky.
So what did he do? He picked another rebirther for himself—one who should understand what needed to happen and who was important.
But no... that fucker had to have a chip on his shoulder bigger than even Wrath did. So he was betrayed by the woman he loved and was killed by her lover, who was also his best friend. It was a tale as old as time. He really needed to get over it.
But could he?
Nope. He, like Alicia, thought that because he was ’brought back’ to ’fix the wrongs of his past’ he was above everyone else.
There was no one else!
He might have been considered to be a powerful human before the end of the world, but right now, he was on the same level as everyone else.
Everyone was just trying to survive right now, and Dante was no different. Pride had been willing to give him the ability to survive... but Dante refused him once too often.
Dante, like René, refused to listen to him! He would not allow that type of disrespect in the meat sacks he had chosen.
Letting out a disappointed sigh, Pride finally admitted that he was going to have to go back to the drawing board when it came to finding his meat sack. He’d keep Dante as a backup plan, but there really should be someone better.
He was Pride... and he would not compromise.
How the fucking nine circles of hell did the fucking lapdog get complete control of a meat sack before they did?!?!
It really wasn’t fair.

Bishop stared at the blank look in Tank’s eyes, noticing for the first time the orange ring around his ice-blue eyes. It felt like someone else was looking at him from inside Tank’s body, and it was enough to produce a shiver of fear in Bishop.
Those eyes didn’t seem human in the least.
"You can’t kill Dante," Bishop tried to reason, only to be stopped by a demonic growl coming out of Tank.
Okay, so reason wasn’t going to happen right now. But Bishop had to give Tank a way out. The man had had his back and saved him more times than he could count. The last thing he wanted was an all-out war with Tank.
And it wasn’t because he didn’t know who would end up winning at the end of the day.
Feeling a pair of eyes on him, Bishop pulled his gaze from Tank’s face and toward the little Pixie in his arms.
She seemed to be studying him intently, looking into his very soul. The logical part of his brain told him that he was being an idiot. That she was blind and was just looking in his general direction. But his instincts warned him not to move.
"I’m sleepy," she said after a moment.
Her two words were like a spell, breaking all tension in the room as Tank visibly deflated, turning a worried look at her. "You didn’t eat a lot for breakfast, and it is way past lunch. I don’t know if the chef managed to survive the attack! What happens if there is no one to make you food?! I need to get you fed. Then you can have a nap. You are too small; I want to feed you. I need to feed you."
Tank seemed to have spoken more in that one interaction than he had in all of last year. Bishop could practically feel the worry bleeding off of him.
"Why don’t I cook her some lunch," he offered on a whim. The threat had been neutralized, and all there was to do at the moment was clean up and take stock of who survived and who had died.
He wasn’t really needed at the moment, and maybe he could find some common ground with Tank so that he wouldn’t be interested in killing Dante anymore.
"Since when do you cook?" demanded Tank, his suspicious eyes shifting away from his little Lamb and over to Bishop.
"Since it means that no one will die at the moment."
