Chapter 56: Don’t Make Me Go Away

Shaking my head, I smiled up at Elizabeth. "I can’t stay here," I murmured, not overly happy about that fact. But I granted all the wishes that I wanted to, and I was worried that I might end up killing more of the women.

"Besides, it’s not like I’m made of sugar. I won’t melt from a bit of rain," I continued, patting her hand. "I’ll be fine, I promise. Besides, it’s surprisingly hard to kill me."

"That is not the type of reassurance that I wanted to hear," grumbled Elizabeth, pulling me into her embrace.

"Then what is?" I asked, genuinely surprised at her statement.

"Tell me that you are going to be safe and happy with whatever you do," she started. Pulling me away from her, I felt her thumb rubbing my cheek. "Tell me that you will come back if at all possible, and tell me that you will never forget me."

"I promise that every time I have a glass of sweet tea, I’ll remember you," I chuckled, my voice slightly breaking as I spoke. It was easier to leave dead people. There was nothing holding you back when they couldn’t touch you.

A huge part of me was screaming to stay with Elizabeth, to just grant the wishes of the people who made it into the house and live like that for the rest of my life.

But I knew better.

There was still a whole world for me out there to explore.

"Be safe, Hattie," whispered Elizabeth, kissing my forehead before she led me to the stairs and helped me down them.

The metallic smell of blood was slowly disappearing, and I could only assume that the house was cleaning up from the massacre. Hopefully, by the time day broke, there wouldn’t be a single sign to remind Elizabeth about what had happened this night.

Reaching the front door, Elizabeth tried to step through, only for an invisible force to hold her back. "I guess my wish is starting."

"I’m sorry," I sighed. I probably should have added the property to the wish and not just the house, but I was still new to this whole thing.

"Don’t be," chuckled Elizabeth, gently pushing me forward. "I’ve had enough of the outside world. This is the perfect excuse not to have to leave the house."

Turning around, I called out to one of the sins. ’Greed?’ I whispered brokenly. ’Can you just let me see her one last time?’

"Of course, Little Bit," murmured Greed as he wrapped me in his firm embrace.

Opening my eyes, I stared at Elizabeth as she clasped both hands over her mouth to muffle the sound of her crying. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she stared at me, not bothering to wipe them away.

"Live a good life, Elizabeth," I said. "I wish you have nothing but blessings from here on out, and may all your dreams come true."

She quietly nodded her head and I turned back around as I walked down the eight steps, the rain drenching me within seconds.

"Are you okay?" asked Greed, his arms still wrapped around me. Calling on Teddy, I gripped him tightly in my arms as I buried my face in his head.

"No," I replied honestly. "But I will be."

And that was the truth. Beginnings and endings were always painful, but that didn’t mean you didn’t keep going forward. If that was the case, then I would never have left the woods after I lost the guys.

No matter how painful the goodbye was, I just had to keep putting one foot in front of the other, and I would be fine.

"That’s my girl," chuckled Pride, appearing by my side.

That’s right. I needed to keep my mission in mind: get wishes so that my demons could become real.

"Where to next?" I asked, closing my eyes as the rain continued to intensify until it was practically a sheet. I let Pride and Greed, my two companions since I was four, lead me through the darkness of the night.

-----

"You don’t wanna be ’ere, little girl," growled a deep voice right in front of me. I stumbled to a stop, no longer putting one foot in front of another.

The voice sounded gruff, and there was a slight O City accent to it, but it wasn’t nearly as deep as the guys.

"But I’m here," I replied, looking up toward where the voice was coming from. When something cold touched my nose, I blinked rapidly. "Is it... snowing?"

"It ’as been for the past two hours," grunted the man, clearly exasperated at my question. "Where are your parent? They shouldn’t have left you alone like this. Don’t you know that there are zombies out there?"

The man continued to grumble, sounding more and more like Dimitri with every word he spoke. Instead of being intimidated like he wanted, I was oddly comforted.

"They’re dead," I assured him with a smile and a nod. "And I haven’t seen a single zombie since I started walking."

I could feel the air shifting as the man waved his hand in front of my eyes. "Are you... blind?" he asked softly, almost like he was afraid of offending me with his question.

"Yup!" I chuckled. "Have been for...a while."

The man sighed a very long, harsh sigh as the sound of static sounded between us. "Bishop," he grunted, clearly not talking to me. "Get someone to come take my place."

"No," crackled the reply. The voice was sharp and cold, but I could also hear a hint of friendly frustration in it. Clearly, whoever this Bishop was, he and the man in front of me were friends. "Your shift is done in another four hours. I don’t care how cold you are; deal with it."

The man in front of me let out a long string of curse words that I didn’t think Bishop could hear before he clicked the button again. "You can either get someone to take over for me, or my post will be left empty. Your choice."

There was another click as he released the button.

"You really aren’t going to leave?" the guard in front of me asked, and I could feel a massive hand landing on my head. It didn’t hurt, but it was definitely heavy.

"No place to go," I shrugged, completely honest. I wasn’t going to use him to see since I already knew what I looked like. Clutching Teddy even closer to my chest, I used my best puppy eyes. "Please don’t make me go away."
