Chapter 44: The Savior Of Mankind
Chapter 44: The Savior Of Mankind
Continuing to use Elizabeth’s sight as my own, I couldn’t help but smile as our small party of twelve continued to walk up the long driveway.
Gators chirped on either side of the paved surface, reminding us of their presence, but even that wasn’t enough to discourage the happiness of the people around me.
Jennifer was practically bouncing with every step as she followed behind Elizabeth, while some of the other girls whispered amongst themselves.
Even the men, Isaac, Jeremiah, and the third guy couldn’t contain their excitement as they started walking faster now that the front door was in view.
In fact, the only one who didn’t seem to be as excited as everyone else was Elizabeth.
"Are you okay?" I asked in concern, turning to look at the woman. Of course, I wasn’t able to see her, but she was practically vibrating, and I didn’t think it was with delight.
"Something is off here," she whispered back, so low I almost missed it.
Huh, kudos to her for being the smart one.
"But look, it’s the thing of Jennifer’s dreams. I might not be able to see her, but not even I can miss the smile on her face," I chuckled, not worried about the men in front of us. They were so preoccupied with what was in front of them that they didn’t care about what was behind them.
I guess that was why they forgot to close the gate behind us.
Ah, well,... not my problem.
"That’s what worries me," admitted Elizabeth as Jennifer, catching our conversation, let out a hiss of anger.
"That’s because you can’t appreciate the finer things in life," she complained, bumping her shoulder into Elizabeth’s back. "Fucking pretentious bitch. You are the exact same as the rest of us; don’t pretend otherwise."
Once again, I caught the woman beside me, making sure that she didn’t fall to the ground.
Elizabeth, being the peacekeeper, didn’t say a word as the men came to a stop at the bottom step at the front of the house.
There were about eight steps before you got to the porch and the front door. The door itself was painted bright red, a striking contrast against the white exterior, and each window had black shudders on either side, ready to protect the house in case of a storm.
All in all, it was a beautiful place, much nicer than anything I had ever seen before.
Isaac was the first one up the steps as he handed the rope leading the women to the third brother. Jeremiah was quick on his brother’s heels, a shotgun in his hands and extra shells in his mouth.
Hopefully, he wouldn’t need to fire it more than three times because then he’d be shit out of luck. And putting shells in his mouth couldn’t be all that sanitary, anyway.
I had no idea how long they had been in the house, but after a while, the two brothers emerged with a huge smirk on their faces.
"We’s hit de mudder load!" chuckled Isaac, holding up his own shotgun. "No zombies, lots of food. Whose ever live’ ’ere before liked de finer things in life. Dat’s for sure."
The excitement around me only rose at Isaac’s proclamation, but still, Elizabeth wasn’t sold on it. She gripped my hand so hard I felt the small bones in my hand shifting a bit, but that was fine.
I was just happy that I could offer her comfort.
"Food?" whispered the woman who had wished for food. "There’s food? Our wishes came true?"
"Please," sneered Jennifer. "I think by now, none of us believe in wishes. If such a thing was real, then none of us would be here right now."
"Ah, but you didn’t wish for that, now did you?" asked one of the normally silent women. She was second from the last on the line, and I could only assume that meant that she didn’t want to attract attention to herself.
"You are more than welcome to," replied Jennifer, her face turning into a twisted smirk.
Using Elizabeth’s eyes, I studied the woman. Her brown hair might have been beautiful once, but it looked like straw right now. The ends were so dry they were practically fluffy, and her scalp was so oily, you could practically cook with it.
She wore the same rags that Elizabeth did. The dresses that looked so old they might have come out of another century or something. Her’s was blue while Elizabeth’s was pink, but otherwise, they were identical.
"Maybe I will," shot back the woman but didn’t take it any further.
Crowing that she had won the ’argument’, Jennifer turned to look at me.
"The men now have a bed... are you looking forward to tonight?" she asked. Her eyes seemed to be searching my face for some sort of reaction, but I was afraid she wasn’t able to find it.
"I really am," I nodded, a bright smile on my face.
This was the longest time that it took for a wish to activate, even if it was a little less than a day before it appeared. I was interested in seeing just what the house had in store for us.
After all, there should be a million dollars and someone to wait on us, hand and foot, if Jennifer had her way.

"Huh," grunted Dimitri as they stopped in front of the military-grade gates. It had taken them two days to get to the navy base, and he had to admit, he wasn’t overly impressed.
"This is perfect," exclaimed Alicia happily as she gripped René’s hand. I have everything we need to set up a perfect safe haven: solar panels, seeds, cars, tools, anything and everything we could ever need."
"You are amazing," purred René, kissing Alicia on the forehead. "You are truly the savior of mankind."
’That seems to be laying it on a bit thick,’ grunted the voice inside Dimitri’s head. ’He really is an idiot, isn’t he?’
’Is ’e wrong?’ shrugged Dimitri, not really caring. If Alicia wanted to be a savior of mankind, then let her. She had ten years to prepare for this. If she didn’t have everything on hand, then she’d be an idiot, now wouldn’t she?
