Chapter 411: Arguing With Myself

I was dozing in Tank’s arms, completely oblivious to what was going on around me. Not like that was a new thing, but this quarantine room didn’t have any windows to help me know what time it was, and the distinct lack of TV meant that I was bored out of my mind.

But since I hadn’t gone completely crazy yet, I figured that was a good thing. Despite our conversation before, the moment Tank and I were locked inside this room together, I couldn’t bring myself to actually have sex with him.

An uneasy feeling had formed in my stomach, and no matter what I did, it felt like I was one wrong word away from puking my guts out.

Seriously, I refused to open my mouth just in case I ended up throwing up instead of speaking.

I was not happy.

I didn’t even want a lollypop or any candy right now, I was that off. And being off made me cranky.

"Feeling any better?" asked Tank as he stroked my hair. Shaking my head, I pouted. "It’s okay," he assured me, his fingers continuing to work away the knots in my hair. "You’ll feel better fast, I’m sure. Being here in this Sanctuary makes me want to puke, too."

Shifting my head so that I was looking him in the eyes, I raised an eyebrow. "Okay," he admitted, a half smile on his face. "Maybe not puke so much as kill every breathing thing here, but it’s close, right?"

Chuckling, I moved back so that my cheek was resting on his heart. Letting the soft beating of his heart lull me to sleep, I sighed in contentment.

A sharp pain in my chest pulled me out of dead, dreamless sleep, and I sat bolt upright in bed. My mouth opened as I struggled to take in a full breath. My hand, curled in a fist, started pounding on my heart. It honestly felt like my heart was being ripped out, and the only thing that might even remotely keep it in was my hand over it.

"Little lamb," growled Tank, sitting upright with me. He wrapped his arms around me, but I pushed him away. Even the feeling of my clothes pressing against my skin was causing me excruciating pain... and I knew pain.

"Talk to me," begged Tank, his eyes wide with fear as I continued to gasp for air. "What can I do?"

With a moan, I gave up fighting the pain. With my eyes rolling back into my head, I quickly passed out.

"Well," I grunted, my eyes narrowing on the space in front of me. "This is new."

"Welcome to the soul dimension," came my voice from the darkness. "I’d invite you to stay, but despite its name, I find this place to be nothing more than soul sucking."

"Cute," I replied... to myself. "I like the dark humor." Was it weird talking to yourself, knowing that you were legitimately talking to another being? Asking for a friend...

"I know," sneered the voice. "But let’s run down a few ’need to knows’ before you get kicked out of where you shouldn’t be."

"I’m the Devil," I shot back, "there is nowhere I can’t be."

"Lies we tell ourselves for 500," came the voice, her tone annoyingly superior to my own. "You say you are the Devil, but right now you are getting through by the skin of your teeth. When your soul is complete, you’ll be able to fill in all the gaps, but until then, you have me to keep you somewhat sane."

"You’ve done a shit job up to now," I pointed out.

"That’s why I said somewhat sane. Somewhat. As in not completely sane, but not completely insane at the same time."

I shook my fist in the air, but otherwise didn’t say or do anything. Calling up my throne, I sat down and studied the world around me. The space was completely black, filled with all sorts of stars of different sizes and colors, until it looked like I was staring up at the night sky in the middle of the bayou.

There was even a golden crescent moon in the center of the stars...

"You are an idiot," sighed the voice. "But unlike you, I can fix stupid."

"Bless your heart," I snarled at the sky, "then go ahead and fix stupid."

"In an infinite universe, there is a finite number of souls," started my voice as if she was talking to a five year old.

"I highly suggest that you dumb it down even more," I huffed. What was infinite? What was finite?

"There are only a certain number of souls in the universe," huffed my voice right back at me. "Those souls can change forms, but there is no way of creating more of them."

"Okay," I nodded, finally understanding what she was saying.

"When you created the Seven Deadly Sins, you didn’t pull from preexisting souls."

"Yup, I knew that part, too," I agreed, nodding my head. "Clearly, I’m not as stupid as you think I am."

"Nope," I –my voice agreed. "You are even more stupid. Who in their fucking right mind would think that it was a good idea to split a soul into eight parts?!? I mean, seriously! A child wouldn’t be that dumb! But you..."

The voice took in a deep, loud, irritated breath before letting it out. "Wisdom has been chasing after you, but you have always been faster."

Not amused, I glared at the sky.

"It’s not a fucking sky!" screamed my voice. "This is the soul dimension. What the hell do you think those bright shiny things in the darkness are?"

"Stars?" I blinked, tilting my head to the side. If it looked like a duck, quacked like a duck, it wasn’t anything but a duck.

"SOULS!!!" roared my voice, and I couldn’t help but relax on my throne and smile. "They are all the fucking souls in the world. And your soul, our soul, is the giant thing in the middle."

"The moon?"

"Ugh," huffed my voice, all the piss and vinegar gone from her voice. "Fine... the moon. Do you know why it’s not a full moon?"

"Because it doesn’t want to be?"

"No," sighed my voice. "Because you destroyed it. You broke it up until it was nothing more than a sliver, so that when Lilith came and found you, she was able to kill you. That fucking bitch has managed to kill us for 11,000 years and you still walked into her trap! How many times does it take to die before you get smart enough to do something about it?"
