Chapter 405: Pig Teammate

Coming down from the main tower, Alicia stared at the convoy of jeeps that had just returned. After the whole ’incident’, they had changed a few things around at the New Dawn Sanctuary, including a dedicated military section.

Adam had refused to change buildings, but it didn’t really matter. Most of his experiments had expired, and now things were a lot more stable.

The Captain of Team A held up his hand when he spotted Alicia, and the entire procession came to a quick halt.

"Alicia," he called out, hopping out of the vehicle before it had even managed to come to a complete stop. His voice was a lot softer than when he was speaking before... but that was also due to his relationship with the Second In Command of the Sanctuary. "I’m back."

"Welcome home, Alexander," smiled Alicia as she looked around. "Were you successful?"

"Oh yeah," replied the man as he waved his arm toward the rest of the jeeps. "We found an abandoned homestead about five miles out. The majority of it had flooded, and we lost a few men to the gators, but the inside was a gold mine. In fact, we weren’t even able to take half of the stuff with us. We need to go back tomorrow to get the rest."

"That good?" murmured Alicia, her eyes lighting up at the idea of all those supplies. She might be very well off, given her current circumstances, but the gnawing hunger that she had experienced in her past life made her more than a little greedy for supplies.

"Better," smiled Alex. He was about to raise his hand to stroke her cheek, but he quickly dropped it before anyone could see the motion. "We have hundreds of eggs, all water glassed so they are shelf stable, not to mention the canned goods, including premade meals. There was an entire room dedicated to just freeze-dried stuff. I wish you could have seen it."

"I wish I could have, too," replied Alicia, her eyes constantly scanning the jeeps as if she could already see the supplies. "Tomorrow, I’ll go with you."

"Are you sure?" asked Alex, excited. Alicia had almost never left the base since it had been created, so for her to volunteer to go on a mission was everything to him.

"I’m a space user," Alicia said. "I’ll be able to help carry the supplies out. Besides, getting more food is of the utmost importance right now. While our numbers are still down, we have at least 50 people wanting to come in every day. We need to be able to feed them and look after them, right?"

"Whatever you say," chuckled Alex indulgently. "I’m going straight to the base to unload. I don’t want everyone to see what we managed to bring. I am worried that it might be too tempting for some people to pass up."

"Smart," agreed the woman as she walked around Alex and got into the back seat of the jeep. "I’ll even let you drive me."

------

"Is this what you mean by a gold mine?" Alicia asked, the flirtatious smile on her face long gone.

As soon as the eleven vehicles entered the loading bay of the military base, Alicia jumped out and opened the trunk. Looking at the empty space in front of her, she fought hard to control her rage.

"Eleven trucks," she muttered, going over to the next jeep and repeating the process. "Eleven trucks left New Dawn Sanctuary yesterday, and eleven trucks came back..." Her voice trailed off as she moved onto the third jeep.

"Empty," muttered Alex, looking with disbelief at the space that had once been packed so full that they struggled to even close the trunk lid.

"Empty," grunted Alicia, as the fourth, fifth, sixth,... tenth, eleventh jeep all came back the same. There wasn’t even a scrap of food, not a crumb, or a bottle of water. There certainly weren’t any eggs or premade meals.

All that gas... for nothing.

"Where," Alicia hissed, her voice brittle and trembling as she turned on Alex, "is the food?"

"I don’t understand," Alex finally said just as Réne walked into the bay. "It was there. We loaded the trucks ourselves. I don’t—"

"Don’t you dare say that you don’t understand. Whether you understand or not, the results are the same. There is no fucking food," hissed Alicia as she turned around to stare at Alex with wild eyes. "Do you have a space user on your team that you didn’t report?"

Alexander looked at the woman who had, just a few nights ago, whispered sweet nothings at him. Right now, he didn’t recognize the woman in front of him.

"You banned space users from the military, remember," he said, his voice becoming just as hard as hers. It would have been so much easier for him if his team had a space user. But Alicia was almost neurotic about them.

She seemed to think that they would take everything and give nothing back. And for the most part, Alex understood her fear. When supplies were the difference between life and death, having someone you didn’t trust handle all the supplies was a fool’s errand.

Besides, any person who entered the Sanctuary with a space power seemed to disappear within a matter of hours. It was the worst-kept secret. Those with space powers were more likely to wind up dead than living happily.

The only exception to the rule, of course, was Alicia.

"It wasn’t the men," sighed Réne, pulling the hissing Alicia into his arms. "You know that as well as I do."

"I know nothing of the sort," snarled Alicia, fighting his embrace. She didn’t want to be pacified. They only had a few months’ worth of supplies, and as far as she was concerned, that was not nearly enough.

Réne, on the other hand, had never been hungry, so he didn’t understand just how quickly the food and water can disappear. And just what a desperate person was capable of doing.

"We were stopped on our way here," announced one of the soldiers. The rest of the team were standing in a straight line, happy that the shit going on now was above their paygrade. But every team had that one pig teammate who ruined it for the rest of them. "Maybe he took the stuff."
