Chapter 341: Already Be Dead

The height of the snow drifts was getting higher and higher the longer they walked. Salvatore was getting antsy with every step they took. It felt like they were rats in the maze, complete with eyes watching them from above, but there wasn’t much they could do about it.

They were literally in a tunnel dug from hellfire that still allowed them to see the sky, but they were blind going forward. Even the tunnel itself was only wide enough for one person at a time, so if they were attacked, they were sitting ducks.

"Sure?" he asked, looking at Chang Xuefeng, not missing the stiffening of the muscles of the man walking in front of him.

"Of the 28 life forms ahead or of killing those life forms if they don’t submit?" answered the angel with a question of his own. His voice was flat as if he was above it all, and no matter what happened next, it wasn’t going to be a problem. He was, they all were, but that didn’t mean they were any less stressed about bringing Hattie into an unknown situation.

"Both," replied Salvatore, cracking his neck from side to side. He wasn’t feeling the cold, per se; however, he knew his reaction time was getting slower and slower with every step he took. They needed to get to someplace warm and fast.

Otherwise, if the freezing temperatures didn’t kill them, whoever those eyes belonged to just might.

Finally, Tank stopped and looked over a still sleeping Hattie to the rest of them.

"There’s a door," nodded Beau as he pushed a few of the other men aside. "Any way this will bring us back to the house and a hot tub?"

"The house brought us here for a reason," sighed Luca with a shake of his head. "And whatever it is, we aren’t going to be able to leave until we figure it out.

"Like an escape room from hell?" chuckled Désiré. "Who knows, it might be fun. De house won’t let anythin’ ’appen to Hattie, so we’ll be just fine. Might as well enjoy this vacay while we are here."

"Vacay?" demanded Salvatore, his face completely blank as if he was planning out Désiré’s death down to the finest detail.

Désiré simply shrugged his shoulders before he walked over to the door. "Anywhere with our woman is a vacay," he said, his voice light.

"If dere is a vote," started Dimitri, his eyes narrowing on the small part of the building that they could see. "I vote fer someplace warm."

"Second," agreed Ronan as Luca pulled his sniper rifle from his space. He was pretty damn lucky that he even remembered he had a backup with Luca since they normally didn’t bother with his space.

After all, when your woman could grant any wish you had, what was the point of having a space?

Once again, Désiré shrugged his shoulders and placed his hand on the doorknob. It was one of those old school round ones with a deadbolt lock over top. While the doors themselves might have been made from glass, it was next to impossible to see what was going on inside.

"I think it’s snowed in," muttered Dante, studying the scene in front of him. Looking up, it was easy to see that the first five floors were covered in snow on each side. The only bottom part of the building that wasn’t packed in snow was where Tank stood.

The sixth floor and above had the occasional light flickering in the windows, but even then, it wasn’t a bright light.

"Snows getting worse," reminded Chang Xuefeng, casting a worried look at Hattie. "Are we going up outside or inside?"

No one offered a solution until Désiré simply melted the lock and the handle and opened the door.

Instead of seeing another wall of snow, they were looking down an empty hallway. "I think de house made de choice," Désiré said, tilting his head. "Let’s be getting’ in sooner rather than later."

Tank snuffed out his flames as Chang Xuefeng went in first, followed closely by Dante and Luca. When the three men hadn’t said anything, Tank went in next, followed by the rest of the men.

The building was eerily quiet; the sound of the wind screaming through any crack it could get in gave everything a more haunted feel, and the only source of light was a flashlight that Luca had found.

"I had forgotten about my space," scoffed Luca. "I’ve been depending on Hattie too much; I need to refocus on what’s important."

"An’ what’s more important den Hattie?" demanded Ronan, raising an eyebrow even as his eyes continued to scan their surroundings. Lifting a finger to his cheek, he started tapping on his skin in a steady rhythm.

Luca nodded, his voice just as easy as before. "Making sure that everyone understands the consequences of trying to take what is mine."

"Well, now," came a deep voice from the shadows. "Where I come from, it’s rude to enter a person’s house without an invitation, eh?"

"We’re just trying to get out of the cold," replied Dante, holding his hands to the side slightly to show that he wasn’t armed. "When the snow stops, we’ll be out of your hair."

"See, that’s what’s making me curious," continued the voice, the tone as cold and unforgiving as the weather outside. "It’s been snowing like this for the past week. The temperature was in the 20s one day, and then next minus 50."

"Is that in Celsius or Fahrenheit?" asked Désiré, a bright smile on his face.

"I don’t think it matters," replied Dante. "When it’s that cold, it’s fucking cold."

The man scoffed as he stepped out of the shadows and into the men’s line of sight. "Spoken like true Country M citizens. What brought you to our neck of the woods?"

"The snow," sighed Beau. "We already told you that."

"No, yeah, no," replied the man with a shake of his head. "There’s no place standing near here with survivors. If you had really been out in the elements for the past week, you’d already be dead."
