Chapter 333: Wishes Are Like Knives

"But you were right, Daddy," I chuckled, smiling up at Chang Xuefeng. "I really did need to get out of the house. I haven’t had this much fun in a while! We should do this more often."

Chang Xuefeng looked at me, an indulgent smile on his face even as he brushed back my hair. "Whatever Princess wants," he assured me, even as we all heard the sound of a ’crunch’. Turning, we all looked at where Jonas had accidentally stepped on a skull left over from the soldiers.

It must have still had an eye in its socket because the pressure from Jonas’ foot sent it flying onto the floor. The hounds, thinking that they had found a new game, started chasing after it. Unable to dig into the hard marble floors, their claws slipped, sending them sliding in different directions, even as their mouths tried to get the eye.

Dimitri couldn’t help but laugh as the eye landed against his boot. Bending down, he picked it up and held it between his thumb and index finger. "Who wants it?" he asked as the hounds slid to a stop in front of him, their little stubs of a tail frantically wagging back and forth. "Go get it!"

Tossing the eyeball down the hallway, the hounds raced after it until they slammed into the elevator. Even I was surprised when the doors closed shut behind them and took them away.

"Shouldn’t we go after them?" I asked, looking at Dimitri as he wiped his fingers on his pant leg.

"Naw," he purred, winking at me. "How much harm can a couple of pups cause havin’ fun?"

Seeing his point, I nodded my head, even as Gerald started sputtering beside me. "No!" he cried, trying to get control over the situation. "This can’t be happening! A lifetime of work, destroyed in a single night. My work!"

Désiré sauntered over to Gerald and patted him on the shoulder even as he shook his head. "Well, like we say in O City... Laissez les bons temps rouler. You be too tight, let go ’n enjoy life."

"Enjoy life?" sputtered Gerald, his eyes going wide as he looked around at the chaos. "You," he hissed at me, his face becoming blank even as his eyes showed his descent into madness. "This is all your fault. None of this would have happened if it wasn’t for you!"

"Well, now," smirked Ronan even as he pulled out a 9mm handgun. "I don’ think you can say dat, now can ya?"

"After all, if you guys didn’t bring her here, then none of this shit would have happened," finished Beau with a shake of his head.

"What are you going to do? Kill me? You can’t kill me; you’ll be kicked out of the Sanctuary, and we all know that is a death sentence," sneered Gerald as he waved his hand and pushed away Ronan’s gun. I had to admit, the man had guts.

Not bothering to say anything, Ronan lined back up his shot and took it. The bullet entered the center of Gerald’s head and quickly exited out the back, covering the tech in brains and blood. The man, not knowing what to do, passed out, cracking his head against the floor, never to wake up again.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the look on Jonas’ face. "The man had it coming," I assured him. "Do you know it was him who started this whole apocalypse thing? Admitted it and everything. Maybe if someone had the guts to kill him sooner, then we wouldn’t have had to live through this."

Then again, if there was no apocalypse, then I would still be under Père’s thumb, never once seeing the world outside of the tiny house I called a home.

Maybe I couldn’t be too mad a Gerald. After all, he inadvertently managed to grant my wish.

"Well, no point in staying around here," I announced, coming to my feet. Chang Xuefeng held out his hand for me to take and I smiled up at him. "Let’s go see what other surprises this place has before we leave. I think we can say for sure that even though the guys from the MC will still be alive, they might not want to be. The best we can do is offer them a quick death before heading home."

Dante nodded his head in agreement. "Well, let’s see how deep this hole goes."

He and the rest of the guys split up, taking out both guards, and experiments like this were nothing more than a family stroll down the street. Walking toward the elevator, I felt something grab my ankle.

Startled, I looked down and saw of one of the guards from before grabbing my leg. "Save me," he gasped. "Please. I’ll give you anything. I want to live."

Letting go of Daddy’s hand, I crouched down and seriously stared at the man. His lower half was completely gone to the point that his intestines were hanging out of his body. He was pale and sweaty, and I could see his heart struggling to pump blood.

But he was strong. Even with all the damage he had, he was holding on to my ankle like I was his only chance at living.

Smart man.

"You know, sometimes death is more of a mercy instead of a punishment. Are you sure you want to live?" I asked, cocking my head to the side.

"I refuse to die," he growled at me. "I will not die. There is a rumor that you can grant wishes. We saw the food. I wish to live."

It took me a moment to figure out what he was trying to say, but then I realized he was talking about the dinner I had given the other prisoner. Well. He had a point. I did grant wishes.

"Okay," I whispered to him, a bright smile on my face even as a black mist started to cover his lower half and spread up his body. "But if you remember nothing else about today, remember this: wishes are like knives—beautiful, deadly, and always ready to stab you in the back."
