Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse
Chapter 331: The Supernatural World

Chapter 331: The Supernatural World

As of on cue, and I swear I had nothing to do with it, the elevator opened, and a swarm of guards in combat gear and guns poured out like clowns in a clown car.

"You know what we are missing?" I sighed, slumping a bit on my throne. "The killer clowns. I kind of miss the freaks. They seemed to have added just the right amount of spice and screaming to any situation."

Gerald looked at the approaching men and women like he had just been granted a reprieve from death. I almost didn’t have the heart to tell him that he was simply dreaming while awake.

"They aren’t here to save you," I sighed, wishing that this man was a bit more entertaining. "You’re here... that makes you a failed experiment. And what do we do to failed experiments?"

Before Gerald could reply, one of the lead guards shot a man with too many arms in the head, causing him to fall to the ground. I wanted to say that he was dead, but unlike the soldiers who were ’clearing’ the floor, I was smart.

"Excuse me?" I called out, raising my hand. When the lead soldier’s gun swung around to point at me, Tank rose to his feet with a threatening growl. "He’s not dead yet," I kindly reminded the man, even as the octopus-man shakily rose to his feet, his flesh turning from an olive color to a sickening green one.

"I’m going to assume that everyone in this base is a zombie," I whispered loudly to Gerald, even as a barrage of bullets tore holes into the octo-man. If he survived, I was really going to have to come up with a better name for him.

Doc Oct? No, that was done and probably copyrighted. Even in the apocalypse, I wouldn’t be surprised if lawyers and cockroaches managed to survive longer than the rest of us. I was not going to mess with them.

When one of the soldiers toward the back lit a flamethrower, I knew I no longer had to worry about the name.

However, just before the soldier could completely engulf the man with a hundred arms, one of the zombies with a mouth for a stomach did something like a bellyflop onto the guy, swallowing him in a single gulp.

"Now that I didn’t see coming," I murmured, impressed. Who needed to spend so much effort bringing the food to your mouth when you just had to lay on them? It brought a whole new meaning to breakfast in bed.

"It’s not..." started Gerald, trying to think of a good word. "An efficient way of eating," he finally finished as I watched at least two other zombies climb up the walls before falling onto the soldiers around them.

I guess if I was thinking of functionality and not ’cool’ then I could see his point. But that still begged the question. "Why would you do something like that in the first place?"

Everything on this planet had their mouth in somewhat of the same place. Unless you were going with an octopus. Was that what they were trying to do?

"We wanted to add blue-ringed octopus to the host DNA, but it failed," shrugged Gerald like it wasn’t that big of a deal. "We liked the idea that its venom could cause breathing failure to both humans and zombies alike."

"So you put the venom inside the zombie? Isn’t that a bit counterproductive? I mean, it’s not like they can poison themselves."

The look Gerald gave me was like I was the stupidest person in the world. "Do you even know how the original zombie was created?" he sneered at me.

"I assumed it was a wish by someone who wanted a reason to go out and kill 70% of the population," I replied with a shrug of my shoulders.

"I was one of the lead scientists at the time, working closely with Country K to create a retrovirus that would improve our naval forces. The initial samples contained the stem cells from the Hydra, a creature that can never die, along with DNA from the starfish and the mako shark. The Hydra has an overabundance of the Fox O gene, which gives them the capacity for infinite self-renewal. Add on the starfish that can regrow its limbs and the mako for speed and agility and you have the perfect soldier. An unlimited army that is always ready for more and doesn’t stop for anything. Not even death."

As Gerald started to drone on and on, I felt myself slowly doze off. I might have understood one out of every twenty words coming out of his mouth, but I got the gist. "You created the zombie apocalypse."

"Hardly," sneered Gerald. "I created a super soldier. It was the government who wanted to expand past the volunteers to the entire population. Or do you really think that the vaccine you were getting was real?"

"Jokes on you," I laughed. "I never got the vaccine."

"Then how did you get your power? According to your file, you are a level three fire power user."

"See, that’s why you can’t believe everything you read on paper. I never claimed to have any powers. Even back then, Jonas wanted to get his hands on Tank, so he fudged my application," I answered, more than a little giddy at the green hint to Gerald’s face.

The poor baby looked like the world was ending simply because my entrance papers weren’t real.

"What?" I continued, even as the screams of soldiers and experiments bounced off the walls of the narrow corridor. "It’s not like I could say that Tank was a Hellhound. Who would believe that?"

"Hellhound?" repeated the tech, even as Gerald looked disgusted.

"The supernatural world doesn’t exist outside of story books, Ms. Lucy," sneered Gerald even as one of the soldiers called down lightning into the hallway, trying to get the upper hand.

"I’m sorry," I nodded. "Then what do you call that?" Pointing to the man who was continuing to call down lightning on everyone around him, teammates included, I couldn’t help but smirk. "That seems pretty supernatural to me."
