Chapter 227: Too Kind

Pride was stunned for a moment as the strongest woman he had ever met lost her mind. Even after everything she had experienced growing up, never once had she made a sound like this. It was like her mind and heart had completely shattered as her eyes lost all signs of life.

And the sound coming out of her?

It was a cross between pure terror... and something else that he couldn’t put his finger on.

"Gluttony," hissed Pride. His diamond-black eyes reflected his rage as he looked down at the human kneeling in front of his Queen. "If you don’t fucking shift right this minute so that you can treat Hattie, I will show you why I am the first of the Sins."

Gluttony, looking out of Beau’s eyes, snarled softly, even as Hattie continued to look at her stomach while screaming. Ramsey was desperately licking at the wounds, trying to clean them up to the best of his ability, but even then, they continued to bleed.

"I’m not a doctor," sneered Gluttony, even as he felt a sharp, stabbing pain in his heart as he looked at Hattie. "I have no idea how to make her better."

"You are the fucking closest thing we have to a doctor, and until we can replace you with someone better, you are going to have to suck it up and deal," stated Pride, his horns threatening to brush against the ceiling as he straightened to his full height. However, the second the house sensed the movement, the height of the ceiling increased to accommodate him.

Raising an eyebrow, it was Pride’s turn to sneer. "She doesn’t want humans in this room," he announced, cocking his head to the side even as his wings stretched out, encompassing Hattie in their embrace. "And my Queen will always get what she wants."

Once again, the second his wings threatened to touch the walls, the room grew bigger.

"House," he called out, his eyes never leaving the very human faces of his brothers. "If there is anyone with a human face after I get to one, I want them out of the house, and they aren’t allowed to come back in."

"You can’t do that," sputtered Lust as he looked out from Désiré’s eyes. "Just because you are okay with your demon side doesn’t mean that the rest of us are. At least you don’t look like a giant gold coin."

Pride chose to ignore the Sin as he continued to look around. Demons spent so long in human skin it was like that was their original look. Only those who were too weak to maintain the other form chose to appear as a demon.

To be a demon who looked like a demon meant that you were at the bottom. They didn’t have power, wealth, or anything that their society valued, and so they weren’t valued either.

And yet, here was the strongest demon ever willing to appear in his original form for a female.

"You aren’t kidding, are you?" murmured Sloth slowly as he stretched out his wings. It had been millennia since he had last appeared in this form, and the blue skin on his hands looked completely foreign as he held it up and inspected it.

"I wasn’t," Pride assured him. "Pick up Hattie and comfort her. Don’t let the hound agitate her wounds."

A sly smile appeared on Sloth’s face as he made his way to the bed. To anyone else, it would have looked like he was taking his time, but Pride knew this was practically a sprint for a demon who gained power by being lazy.

"I make no promises about giving her back," Sloth chuckled as Pride moved his wings, revealing the woman under them.

Her mouth was still open in a scream, but nothing was coming out besides a choking sound as she struggled to breathe.

Plucking her away from Pride, Sloth crawled over the hound as he got more comfortable in the massive bed. "Was it always this size?" he asked, cocking his head to the side as he looked around.

Even in their shifted form, everyone would have more than enough room in the bed to sleep. Or do other activities...

"The house is an extension of Hattie," reminded Pride. "That means whatever she wants or needs, it delivers."

"Including a much bigger bed?"

"Including a much bigger bed," agreed Pride, looking over his shoulder for a moment before he turned around to address the other five.

"Want to remind me who died and made you the leader?" demanded Wrath as he looked out from Dimitri’s eyes. "Cause you have no say on who our Queen chooses."

Pride chuckled softly, but there was no amusement in the sound. In fact, it was almost a threat as he cocked his head to study Dimitri’s body. "You are right," he agreed with a nod. "But you fail to look at the bigger picture."

Lust scoffed, the sound forced out of Désiré as the humans were shoved so far back into the depths of their minds that it would be a miracle if they were ever to surface again. "And what is the bigger picture, brother dear?"

"My soul is connected to hers; I pledged myself to her. And she said that she needed the demons, not the humans. So, if you aren’t going to listen to her orders, I will find other demons to fit her needs. Maybe even those who aren’t as selfish as yourselves."

"Us?" chuckled Gluttony as he rose to his feet. "You are the selfish one. You just want to keep her for yourself."

"There is too much talking," announced Azrael as two white eyes shone from the darkness of his hood. "Pride is being too soft on you five. You have three seconds to shift or get the fuck out."

The Grim Reaper lifted his hand, completely devoid of flesh, as he held up three fingers. "Three," he announced, the air around them standing still as the rest of the Sins looked at each other. "Two." Sloth let out a contented sound as he wrapped Hattie in his wings, and she finally relaxed a fraction. "ONE."
