Chapter 156: Where Are We Going?

Chapter 156: Where Are We Going?

Max stared at Dimitri as the rest of the guys around him remained silent, not one of them disagreeing with what that demon had said.

"Are you serious right now?" demanded Max, looking over to Luca to step in. Luca was the only one who could temper Dimitri’s temper, but even he was keeping his mouth shut. "After everything we’ve been through? All the foster homes, all the beatings, the starving... everything that we have always had each other backs for for the past 20 some odd years... and this is how it ends?!?"

"Not our decision," shrugged Luca, his voice cutting through Max’s heart like it was nothing. There was a long pause before Luca let out a long sigh, and Max felt a stirring of hope that maybe they would turn around, realize their mistakes, and go back to Réne and beg for forgiveness.

"De world ’as changed, little bro," chuckled Désiré. "Everyone is either gonna ’ave ta step up or step out. De choice is yours."

"So, just because I hate the feeling of blood on my hands, you are all writing me off??" demanded Max, his face turning pale at the knowledge that he has well and truly backed himself into a corner.

"De blood on our ’ands donna exactly wash off anymore," chucked Ronan, his eye half open. "It ain’t never washed off. It be way too late fer regrets, mon guy."

"Listen to me," sputtered Max, trying desperately from keeping his entire world from crashing down around him. "We all regroup and head back to Réne. Once we are back at the base, no one will remember that we were ever these monsters who burnt down everything around them. We’ll all forget everything, and everything will be all better... just like it was in the past."

There was a long stretch of silence as Dimitri and Luca shared a look. "There is no going back to someone who had turned their back on the best thing that had ever happened to him," said Luca, his voice calm and collected.

"Well, maybe that kid... woman... wasn’t what was best for him?" begged Max, trying to get everyone to see reason. And even if the other didn’t see it, as long as Luca did, then that would be enough to save his family.

"Dat kid?" chuckled Ronan softly, his eyes wide open as he stared across the fire at Max. "Ye mean de other half of our soul?"

"How is that even possible?" sneered Max, forgetting everything for a moment. "To be half of your soul means that there are only two pieces. So, who is getting her?"

The demon inside Dimitri tisked at Max’s statement as he smiled slowly. "That woman’s heart is big enough for all of us to have a piece of... and then some. She is the most caring, most precious, most..."

The demon let out a long sigh as his voice trailed off. "There is no point in keeping this argument going. Tonight, we’ll get some sleep, and tomorrow, Dimitri will head north. Those who want to come will come... those who want to return to Réne? No hard feelings."

Max blinked the tears out of his eyes as he felt his entire world crumbling around. He didn’t even know if Réne was going to be willing to let him back in the compound...

And he didn’t want to be alone.

"This, too, is a type of war," continued the demon as if he could read Max’s mind. "And in every war, there are sides and lines that cannot be crossed. You have crossed mine tonight. Even if you decide not to go back to Réne, you are no longer welcome to fight alongside me."

And that was the end of that.

Tank looked over his shoulder as the dusk approached. He was only giving Dante another few minutes to get his ass in gear, or he was leaving without him.

"You want to tell me where we are going?" asked Dante with a sigh. Long gone were his three-piece suits and fancy leather loafers. Instead, he was dressed like any one of his enforcers, completely with black cargo pants, a thin, long-sleeved t-shirt, and combat boots.

He had multiple weapons strapped to him, his guns and knives easily accessible, and the semi-automatic rifle swung over his back. It looked like Dante was preparing for war, and in a way, it definitely fit.

"Do you remember how to use any of those?" chuckled Tank as he looked at the guard beside the gate and nodded his head. "You’ve been a boss for so long; I’m surprised that you even remember how to pull a trigger."

"Don’t worry about me," chuckled Dante as he and Tank strolled out the gates and into the sunset. "Are you sure that this is a good time to leave?"

Tank chuckled at that question and clamped down on Dante’s shoulder so hard the man stumbled forward. "The zombies won’t touch us," assured Tank, flashing his teeth.

"Too scared of the demon inside?" asked Dante, raising his eyebrow. Neither one had confirmed the fact that there was something more to Tank, something that not even Dante could put his finger on.

Tank chuckled and nodded his head. "I was wondering when you were going to catch on."

"It’s obvious to anyone who knows you," shrugged Dante as his eyes searched the shadows around them. The zombies were hardly the worst thing to come across in the darkness. "Which is probably why Bishop can’t stand you anymore. He was always way too religious for us."

"I never understood why he left the seminary and joined the mob... it seems like a... weird choice with the killing and all," chuckled Tank. Seriously, even if he didn’t want to be a priest, there were so many less violent paths to have chosen.

"He maintains that he felt a calling to it," replied Dante, letting the matter drop. Everyone had their own story as to why they decided to join the Family, and it wasn’t up to him to say if they were right decisions or not. "Now, where are we going?"

"To get my little Lamb, of course," chuckled Tank as Dante stopped dead in the middle of the road. "She’s been somewhere north for the past few days. It’s time to bring her home."
