Chapter 139: You Can Have Him
Tank rotated his head from side to side as he tried to work out the knot that had been there since his little Lamb had disappeared. He stared at the abandoned mall and the fires that were lit throughout the hallways.
Even from this distance, he could see the over a hundred people huddling around the small fires, trying to get warm as they scrapped together all the food they had.
He assumed that at one point in time, a scene like this would have made him feel pity, but right now, he just felt nothing. Odds were good that someone in this compound wouldn’t hesitate to kill his little Lamb for an extra helping at dinner.
And that was a chance he just wasn’t willing to take.
Looking up at the sky, he watched as the sun slowly sunk over the horizon. The sounds of zombies coming out to play was like music to his ears. He learned quickly that they avoided him like the plague... if zombies could get the plague, and he used that to herd them in the direction he wanted them to go.
What used to take twenty or more men now only took him.
However, in this case, the zombies were already interested in the poor humans inside the mall. Their stench stretched so far that it wasn’t a surprise that they managed to attract an entire horde. Too bad they were just the stupid ones.
He had yet to see the smart ones after that first time.
Coming to his feet, Tank slipped in behind the horde, the few stragglers looking over their shoulders in fear as they spotted him. His presence seemed to have made them go faster toward the mall.
Whether it was to get to their food or get away from him, it didn’t really matter. The ending would be the same.
Hanging back, Tank leaned against one of the burnt-out cars in the parking lot as the zombies tried their best to rush forward, their legs stumbling over themselves as their moans became louder.
Crossing his arms in front of him, he couldn’t contain the smile as he heard the screams and pleas of the people in the mall as the zombies broke through the flimsy barrier of debris.
Sounds of gunfire quickly cut through the night air, but it wasn’t enough to completely stop the moans. Deciding that he had taken long enough, Tank stepped forward, a lightness in his step as he saw the bodies around him.
Zombies gorged themselves on their kills as men, women, and children huddled away from the massacre in front of them. Mothers held their hands over the mouths of babies to get them quiet, not wanting to draw attention to themselves as zombies popped their heads up at Tank’s arrival.
"Mr. Garner," he called out, locating the ’Leader’ of the relatively large survivor’s group. "Long time no see."
Cameron cocked his head to the side; his AK 74 held up to his eyes as he kept the muzzle trained on the newest threat. "What are you doing here?" Cameron might not know his name, but he had easily recognized the man from Dante’s office. "Did you bring them?"
Tank shook his head with a low chuckle as he walked around a dead body with four zombies eating from it. The confidence he displaced made Cameron narrow his eyes. "Zombie’s aren’t quite trained," chuckled the massive man. "I couldn’t bring them here if I tried."
"Then why are you here?" demanded Cameron, shifting a bit to take a headshot at the zombie who was lurching for a small child off to the side.
"Mr. Leone thought more about what you had asked for and wanted me to see if you had changed your mind," shrugged Tank, putting his booted foot through the skull of one of the zombies near his foot.
"I am not the one who needed to change his mind," hissed Cameron, his gaze leaving Tank and turning to the zombies in front of them. There were more of them than their bullets, but at least if he was going to die, he would go out fighting... protecting.
"No, you are the one who went to a negotiation with nothing to offer," replied Tank with a smile as he put his hands in his pockets. "You can’t expect us to just hand over all our supplies simply because you said ’pretty please’. I mean, you’re attractive and all, but you aren’t my type."
Cameron growled low as he shot another zombie that had come too close to those he was guarding. He might not be able to save everyone, he could at least protect those behind him.
"I can see that you’re busy right now," continued Tank as he tilted his head toward the zombie who had finished eating. "If you survive, come back to the Lair. We’ll see if we can’t find a place for you and your company."
Turning around, Tank started to turn around, only to be stopped by a desperate hand on his pant leg. Looking down, he saw a small child gripping his leg as if she would never let him go. "Can you please take me and my mommy with you?" asked the girl. Her voice was so soft and innocent as she looked up at him with eyes so blue they looked white.
Tank stared into her eyes for a moment before forcefully shaking his head. Crouching down so that he was at eye level with the girl, he gave her a soft smile. "I can take you and your mommy with me," he assured her, resting his giant hand on top of her head. "But what can you and your mommy do for my boss? You are old enough to know that nothing is free in the world."
The child looked troubled as she searched around herself for something to give. Gulping down, she looked at Tank with tears shimmering in her eyes. "I only have Teddy," she whimpered, holding up the brown teddy bear with both hands. "I can give him to you... if you’ll save me and Mommy."
