Chapter 101: Survival 101

I decided to keep my mouth shut; it really wasn’t worth getting into a fight at the moment about whether wishes could come true or not.

After all, I had that fun little ace up my sleeve.

I’d let their dreams make the wishes their mouths would not.

"Sorry," I smiled at Wang Tian Mu. "Back home, it’s a bit different." Shrugging my shoulders, I put on my best innocent face. "But thanks for healing me. It’s been over 13 years since I had last been able to see. It’s kind of nice."

Was I pissed that she had healed me without my permission? Not at all.

It never bothered me that I was blind as much as it seemed to bother the people around me. But now that I was no longer trapped in my three-bedroom home in the bayou, me being blind was a good way to die.

Now I could see the threat coming at me, head-on. I no longer had to rely on anyone to show me what I was facing; I could survive on my own.

And after the second failed murder attempt, I was more on my own than ever.

"I really should have asked your permission first," conceded Wang Tian Mu. "But my powers seem to have a mind of their own every so often. But there is one thing I feel that I should mention before going forward?"

"Oh?" I asked, raising my eyebrows. Was she going to admit to being paid by Brittney to heal me so that I could be tortured even more?

"You seemed to be... trapped," muttered the doctor, looking down at the ground as if she was trying to find a better word than ’trapped’.

"You don’t say?" I chuckled, knocking on the bars separating me from the outside world. "I know I am trapped."

"No," grumbled Wang Tian Mu. "I don’t know how to explain it. It’s like you were stunted as a child, and your body stopped growing as a result. I can heal that. I can make you taller... more... full."

I couldn’t help the chuckle erupting from me as the doctor, blushingly, waved a hand in front of her chest to let me know exactly what she was trying to imply.

"I can restore your internal organs. It’s like you have a completely different side of you trapped because of a lack of nutrients."

"You mean I would no longer look like I was 13 anymore?" I would have to seriously think about that. It was easier to manipulate people when they thought I was a child. Most people would never see me as a threat.

But actually looking my age?

My thoughts flew to Tank, Dante, and the rest of the guys. Would they even recognize me if I looked like I was 18? Would they still want me?

Shaking my head, I banished all thoughts of the guys from entering my mind.

"Do it," I muttered, straightening my back.

"Hold my hand," smiled Wang Tian Mu as she stretched forward from her cage. "And close your eyes."

----

There was one more downside to emerging from the cocoon I had lived in for the past five years. The cage, while small, had a lot more room for someone who was only 4’11". Now, I had no idea how tall I was, but I was definitely squished.

"Okay," growled the man leaning against Wang Tian Mu’s cage. "Here is your Survival 101 guide that the Doc asked me to give you. I’m only going to say this once, so pay attention."

Nodding my head, I did as I was instructed.

"The most important thing for you to remember is that the Healer isn’t to be touched. Ever. If you don’t like being healed, you can just not get hurt. She is my one and only priority, and I will be more than happy to rip you apart if you upset her or hurt her feelings."

Shrugging my shoulders, I nodded my head. I wasn’t kidding about survival at any cost.

"The Alpha is the Reaver in charge of Camp Hell. Whatever he says is how it is going to go, and he won’t have any issues throwing you to the zombies if you don’t fall in line."

This time, I put up my hand and waited to be called on. "Are you serious right now?" asked Rip, his accent becoming more dominant.

"What are Reavers?" I asked, not bothering to answer his question. He didn’t want to waste time, and neither did I. But after everything I had seen and heard in O City, the word Reaver was never passed around.

Rip stared at me for a moment, his eye penetrating into mine as if he was trying to figure out if I really was serious.

"Reavers are..." started Wang Tian Mu, only to get cut off by Rip.

"When the vaccine came out in September, some people had an adverse reaction to them," started Rip. "When the developers, who wanted super-soldiers, ended up with zombies, the scientists from Country K tried to come up with an antidote. They named it R3AV3R, but they weren’t as successful as they hoped. Instead of having a normal, if not slightly mutated zombie, they ended up with human-looking zombies. We don’t feel pain, or emotions, or anything really. It is impossible to kill us, and while we can’t clone ourselves anymore, we don’t really need to."

"You say ’we’," I said, looking at the man in front of me. He looked so much more human than the one who had come previously, but they were the same species... "Is everyone here a Reaver?"

"No," came his abrupt reply. "Now, if you can just keep your mouth shut long enough, I can finish going through the rules."

Miming zipping my lips together, I tossed the ’key’ over my shoulder and waited for Rip to continue.

"You will have the choice in what you want to do. You can either fight with the men in the cages or entertain the guests in the VIP cabins. Either way, you are expected to work for your food. Keep your mouth shut and your eyes and ears open. Anyone having a bad day can take their pound of flesh, and you will be expected to take it."

Nodding my head, I smiled at Rip.

"Anything else?" he grunted, coming to his feet. Reaching through the bars of Wang Tian Mu’s cage, he gently stroked her cheek. "And if you have any wishes you want, ask me first. I’ll give you the world if you would let me."
