“Stop it!”
Bastian clapped his hands together hard and the dogs froze. With a wave of his hand, Margrethe podded out of the kitchen, looking sorry for herself, the puppies followed after. Bastian closed the kitchen door and started to pick up the cutlery that had scattered across the floor.
He approached Odette, who was still sitting there. “Odette, are you okay?” Bastian’s gentle hand brushed through her hair and wiped away the cream that coated her dress.
“Yes, I’m fine, I just dropped the cake by mistake. I’m not hurt so don’t worry.” A smile rose to Odette’s lips. Bastian was well aware that it was her way of hiding her true feelings. He lifted Odette onto the kitchen counter and began to check if she was injured.
“No, don’t do that.” Odette firmly pushed his hand. She couldn’t bear for Bastian to see her in this vulnerable state – it was too humiliating.
“I think you’re angry. Is it because I ruined my birthday?” Bastian asked.
Odette sighed and tried to storm out of the kitchen, but Bastian was blocking her path. She pushed at him in vain. She was forced to look at Bastian, there was cream all over the sleeve of his jacket.
“Please, just get out of my way, Bastian. Your clothes are dirty.”
Bastian was aloof to the state of his attire and tossed his jacket aside.
“Or is it because I broke my promise to be alone together today?” He stroked his large, calloused hand across her cheek gently.
Odette resigned herself to his soft eyes. There was not going to be any quick way around this, so she had to face him. Why did she feel so upset and sad? She thought she could understand it in the devastation of the cake, but the ideal remained just out of reach.
“It’s not because of you,” she finally said in a whisper. Bastian continued his silent stare and waited for words to follow. “It’s became I look so stupid.”
“What does that mean?” Bastian said, looking deep into Odette’s tearful eyes.
“I know that I am overly sentimental and foolish. I’m just as unfamiliar with myself, too. I am not really like this by nature.”
Clung to the small things, plagued by constant thoughts of fret and regret. Her descent into despair made her feel like a naive teenage girl once again, she had never experienced these feelings before
“ I know that every moment together can’t be perfect, but it doesn’t mean we can erase all the mistakes of our past and yet, I want to.”
Odette’s cheeks prickled with red heat and her sparkling turquoise eyes became wide with sorrow. A beautiful, sun-kissed face. Her eyes, filled with tears, glowed as colourful as a finely crafted jewel. Bastian’s expression deepened as he took her in. “We’ve been together for more than four years and over half of that time is filled with anger and hatred. We have spent more time hurting each other than loving. It makes me so sad. It just feels unfair to hang on to a dream that we could never achieve. No matter how hard I try, it will never work and I am just confused.” Odette pushed Bastian away with trembling hands. He didn’t fight it this time.
The anxiety that had lasted since she got out of bed dissipated in an instant. Taking a deep breath, Odette wiped the cream from her face with a dish towel and took off her apron. She looked so much better than before.
“I’m sorry for showing such an immature attitude, I’ll be alright now,” Odette said, donning the air of a noble lady once more. “I’ll make another cake.”
“You don’t have to.”
“No, it’s different now and even if it’s meaningless to you, it’s not to me. I think we will need to delay dinner a little though. Some of it is already prepared if you’re hungry. I’ll wash up first. Step aside, Bastian.”
“Well, I don’t want to.” Bastian said, watching Odette who was covered in cream.
“What do you mean…”
Bastian approached Odette and without warning, started to lick up the cream left on Odette’s cheek and nibbled at her earlobe.
“BASTIAN!” Odette cried out, pushing him away. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”
Bastian continued to lick the cream on her neck and on her lips. “Like you said, I’m hungry and helping myself to the food already prepared.”
“That is not what I meant and you know it, if you want me to bake another cake for you…”
“But my birthday cake is already baked and prepared just the way I like it.”
“What?” Odette said breathlessly.
“It’s my birthday and if I am going to be born again at one, then there’s no past to be sad about and no business to get upset over, right?”
“So you’re going back to behaving like a one year old?”
“If that’s what the princess wishes.” Bastian smiled mischievously and went back to nibbling at the crumbs of cake left on Odette’s neck.
Trapped between the large man and the counter top, Odette had no choice but wait until the man-child was done, but Bastian was far from done. He took up Odette’s hand, like he was going to kiss the back of her cream soaked hands, but instead of his lips, his tongue brushed her fingers adorned with wedding ring and lapped up the cream still there.
Odette’s breath was no longer tranquil. Their sound of breathing gradually penetrated into the heat that filled the kitchen. At this rate, all of her today’s plan was ruined completely. Odette looked down at Bastian, as he cleaned her from head to toe like a cat with its kitten. With her hands now clean, Bastian took up his lips to the neckline of her dress without hesitation.
“Ah,” she let out a shocked gasp, struggling to push him. Was he really going to do this? She didn’t know what she should be feeling, the tingling that shot up her felt perverse, but she wanted more.
Bastian deftly unbuttoned her dress and slid down her underwear. His gaze was hungry, fixated on her heaving chest, his desire reaching a fever pitch
“Wait, Bastian!” Odette said breathlessly, the murky fog draped over her mind lifted a little. She just remembered the oven and jumped off the counter in a hurry.
Bastian watched the runaway birthday cake dash across the kitchen and open up the oven. The savoury scent of deliciously prepared meat filled the kitchen with its greasy scent. With a sigh of relief, Odette put the roasted beef on the counter top. It was almost like the passion was never there to begin with and it baffled Bastian. Odette even showed enthusiasm as she poked at the meat, checking that it had cooked through.
He wasn’t sure if he was more hungry for the beef or for his wife. Either way, a satisfied smile played across his lips as he looked at her tight pants. He felt like a dog, but was strangely excited by it, rather than put off by it. He felt like the one who was experiencing abnormal emotional problems.
He went over to Odette and wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed the back of her neck. Odette immediately forgot about the roast beef and with a whirl of motion, she was laid out on the kitchen table. The sound of clattering crockery filled the air.
“If we do this, dinner will be properly ruined,” Odette said, impatiently waiting for Bastian to undo her dress.
Odette reflected on the ruined day, missing saying happy birthday to Bastian with a delicate kiss first thing in the morning. Spending the day together opening presents and finishing it all off with a nice meal and a perfect cake. It had all gone wrong from the moment the sun broke the night, but it didn’t matter.
In no time at all, the two were half naked and entwined in each other’s love. The smacking of lips, the deep breaths of excitement and the moans of ecstasy filled the air along with the creaking table.
She gazed up at the man with a mixture of excitement and joy shining in her eyes. His perfectly styled hair and neat shirt were in stark contrast to the chaotic movements happening below.
It ended up like this. Odette embraced Bastian in her defeat. She kissed him and gripped his body tight. She ruffled her fingers through his soft golden hair.
They were so immature and she liked it.
