The empire basked in glory after the goddess of victory bestowed her radiant smile. As the emperor proudly declared their triumphant victory, kicking off a grand ceremony, the cheers of the crowd echoed through the streets of the city as they celebrated their nation’s triumph.
From the VIP table behind the emperor’s podium, Odette watched the spectacle with wonder. Underneath a clear blue sky, the sun shone down, illuminating every inch of the world with its brilliance. It was a moment of pure joy and pride for all who witnessed it.
The tide had shifted in the dead of winter. When the Navy celebrated their victory over Admiral Sher’s fleet, the Berg Army seized control of Lovita’s major cities. Helpless and restrained, Lovita was forced to propose a truce. This all happened when the islands in the far north welcomed the first signs of spring.
As summer came to an end, the war that had ravaged the land finally reached its conclusion. Odette received news of the successful negotiations on the Trosa Islands on her way back to their residence with Bastian after he completed his rehabilitation training.
The encouraging news halted Bastian’s steps. He paused and took in the breathtaking sight of the sun sinking below the horizon. The setting sun cast a brilliant orange hue across the sky, painting a stunning backdrop for his thoughts. Time seemed to stand still and she could see the turbulent emotions swirling in his eyes. Shortly after, the sun faded from sight, and the magnificent moon took its place, casting a hauntingly beautiful glow over the island in a mesmerising display.|
“The march will begin soon.” The matriarch of the royal family spoke up among the crowd. Then, a chorus of questions followed her lead, eagerly wanting to know more about Bastian Klauswitz. A man who was once her husband and now her lover, returned as a mostly triumphant general.
“What are your thoughts on your former husband’s winning streak?”
“Strictly speaking, he is no longer her husband. Their divorce has been finalized.”
“Isn’t this just another way of saying they’ve gotten back together? They were together even on the battlefield. And from what I’ve heard, they’re still living in the same house.”
Odette remained unbothered, unaffected by the intense scrutiny of eyes fixed upon her. With poise and grace, she returned their curious gazes with gentle smiles and polite responses. She knew how to navigate the society of fakery, where her charm and wit were her ultimate weapons.
“I warned you, Odette. Rumours would spread in social circles,” Countess Tries scolded, silencing all of them. “I told you to annul the divorce and get remarried officially, but you didn’t listen. Now, you’re labelled as the woman living with her ex-husband.”
“I’m fine, Countess. It’s not even a rumor.”
“My, my, becoming a war veteran has certainly made you bold and daring.” Countess Trier couldn’t contain her laughter as she shook her head in amazement. Odette’s shy yet radiant smile was like a blooming flower, filling the space with warmth and light. In that moment, the Countess felt an understanding and acceptance for everything around her.
Odette stayed on the Trossa Islands until the war came to an end. She devoted herself to caring for Bastian Klauswitz, who suffered serious injuries, and continued her vital work in the Navy Nurse Corps.
The emperor claimed it was Odette’s wish, but Countess Trier couldn’t help but doubt his words. To her, it seemed like a calculated and heartless move, using his own niece as a pawn in the game of silencing public criticism over Princess Helene’s reinstatement. However, any reservations vanished when she met Odette in person, the niece returning home with Bastian Klauswitz by her side.
“Organise it properly and avoid giving people something to criticise during this critical time.” Countess Trier advised her.
The war had brought about immense changes, sweeping through the postwar world like a tidal wave and now a new era was on the horizon. Bastian Klauswitz, once shunned by high society for his humble roots as the grandson of a junk dealer, was now poised to become a leading figure in this changing world. Even those who had previously rejected him could not deny his rise to glory today. His current successes would only solidify his power and position in society.
“You needn’t worry, I will make sure everything is organised.” Odette assured her.
As they made their way back to Berg and settled in at her home in Ratz, she couldn’t help but feel a bit rebellious. It was against the law for them to live together, but they couldn’t resist wasting any more time apart and playing by society’s rules. They both knew that they needed to formalise their relationship properly. With some free time after the triumph ceremony, she planned to sit down with Bastian and work through their issues one by one. She was determined to have everything sorted before any official announcements were made.
Everything always happened in summertime. As she sat under the awning, gazing at the endless summer sky, Odette couldn’t help but think of how their entire relationship had revolved around this glorious season.
Their fake marriage had begun in summer. They divorced under the warm rays of the sun. And now here they were- ready to start anew in summer’s embrace once again.
Her gaze deepened as she reflected on their journey, how far they had come since that fateful day.
It was in this very moment that a triumphant salute resonated through the air. The sound of a military march filled the air as distinguished guests rose to greet their heroes. With grace and poise, Odette joined in. Standing among them, her water-coloured dress dancing in the gentle breeze scented with roses.
Odette meticulously arranged her garments, straightening her shoulder belt and crown to perfection. With a few swift adjustments to her already pristine attire, she gazed proudly down the Avenue Préve.
The triumphant procession was approaching, led by military vehicles carrying renowned commanders-in-chief and decorated generals. The crowd’s cheers grew even louder as they sensed Bastian’s turn was near.
Their beloved hero of the North Sea. And now The Duke of Trosa.
With pomp and splendor, a military vehicle slowly made its way through the adoring crowd and into the square in front of the imperial palace. With an air of regality, he saluted the emperor before making his way onto the podium. Dressed in a pristine white robe that Odette had personally ironed, Bastian climbed the steps with graceful strides, ready to receive his well-deserved praise.
With a bright smile, Odette applauded as Bastian made his way towards the emperor. As he passed her VIP seat, he turned his head and he found her at a glance. In the June sunlight, their eyes met. Though his officer’s cap cast a shadow over his face, she could see the spark in his eyes. His slight smirk only confirmed her hunch. After completing his momentary escape, Bastian continued on his path towards glory. She couldn’t help but admire the man, glowing like a summer sun at its peak on this special day.
It had been a long journey through darkness, and they had finally arrived at a day filled with brightness.
And for her, all traces of sadness had dissipated in that blinding light.

After the triumphant ceremony, a grand banquet commenced to honour the victorious heroes who received medals for their bravery. As the festivities began, Bastian arrived fashionably late, having just concluded his private meeting with the emperor. Although he had been asked to bring a companion, he entered the hall alone. But it was of no surprise to anyone in attendance.
“Admiral Klauswitz has arrived!”
A hush fell over the grand banquet hall as the servant’s cries echoed through the opulent space. All eyes turned towards the entrance, including Odette’s. Despite being busy getting acquainted with the Crown Princess’s circle of friends, she couldn’t resist stealing a glance at Bastian.
His gaze, which had been diligently taking in their surroundings, landed squarely on her face. A smile lit up her features and she resumed her conversation with the ladies.
Bastian couldn’t help but grin, watching his princess play the role of a polite stranger effortlessly. How his Princess had been putting on this act all day long, but he couldn’t help admiring her for it.
Odette insisted on keeping their relationship a secret despite already being seen as a couple by everyone. There was a clear distinction between knowing it privately and announcing it to the world so it would be wise to maintain a certain distance from public events for the time being. Bastian couldn’t help but chuckle at her insistence, but Odette stood strong in her stance.
As they lay naked in bed together, and whispered sweet nothings, she explained that maintaining a respectable image was crucial until they could officially reunite. Although it may not have seemed like a pressing matter in the heat of passion, Bastian wholeheartedly agreed. After all, the princess’s will would always prevail in the end.
After their bodies cooled from the fervent passion, she excitedly discussed the upcoming triumphal ceremony and banquet at the imperial palace. Bastian could see the faint flutter of nerves within her. Despite her seemingly aloof nature, he knew her to be a tender-hearted woman. And he loved it, for he was the sole keeper of this little secret.
Bastian, having pushed aside his lingering desires, quietly retrieved a blanket from under the bed and draped it over her sleeping form. He then lay down next to her, their bodies intertwined; finding comfort in each other’s arms. Under the twinkling lights of the Ferris wheel outside their window, they dozed off together, as had become their nightly ritual since returning home.
His confident strides brought him to a graceful stop in front of Odette, “Hello, Princess.” He greeted her with charming courtesy, drawing attention from those nearby.
“…Hello, Admiral Klauswitz.” Odette mustered an ambiguous smile, hoping he would take the hint and leave her alone.
But Bastian stood firm like an immovable wall, his mischievous intentions clear to her. Just as she was about to protest, the orchestra began playing their first dance song and it was time for the prom to officially begin.
Bastian extended his hand “Will you do me the honor of sharing your first dance with me, Princess?” he asked with a twinkle in his eye. “I beg for your mercy, as I find myself without a partner.” His playful eyebrows wiggled as he added a shameless joke, causing laughter to ripple through the room and furthering Odette’s embarrassment.
“Please, dear Odette, consider Admiral Klauswitz’s request,” the Crown Princess pleaded with a gentle touch on her arm. “It would be quite a shame if our esteemed guest, who shines brightest among all the stars tonight, could not grace us with his dancing due to lack of a partner.”
With a resigned smile, Odette took Bastian’s hand. As they glided towards the centre of the grand ballroom, whispers spread like wildfire among onlookers who had caught wind of the rumour.
The admiral and princess gracefully dance into a waltz under the sparkling chandelier as the unusually long summer sun sets in the background. It was a sight to behold, one that would be talked about for years to come in the halls of the palace.
