Chapter 38: Sign up
{God candidate detected}
{Your trial will soon begin}
{God candidates: 100}
’What trial? God candidate? Where?’ Kieran looked at the AFO building with an assertive gaze, scanning to see if he could find anything strange, yet there was nothing... at least nothing for him to notice.
Alexa, on the other hand, was a lot sharper.
Her senses spiked... She could sense it instantly.
’Aetheris... A powerful aether energy, I can sense it here,’ Alexa warned, an unsettling feeling brewing in her chest.
She could sense the energy and, with deeper focus, not only could she sense it... she could see it.
Thin threads, all spreading out from the AFO building.
The energy was strong, and if she was sure of anything, then it had to be the fact that this energy was far stronger than what Kieran had on him.
This energy...
’It’s much closer to that of a god...’ she focused her senses more... trying to pinpoint the actual source of the energy.
But then she felt a powerful jolt slice right through her, blasting away from the source.
Kieran felt a sting in his chest. He didn’t know what exactly happened, but in his inner consciousness—a space that had been created for Alexa—he witnessed her being blasted away like a ragdoll.
Blood seeped from the side of her mouth.
Alexa could barely stand. She held onto the earth with her hands, her breath ragged.
’That energy, it had to be... a god? What would one be doing here?’ She immediately tried to trace the energy again.
But it had completely disappeared, leaving no trace whatsoever... as though it had never been there in the first place.
"What happened?!" Kieran asked worriedly, his brows furrowed, confusion-stricken.
"It’s nothing serious," Alexa said, staggering back to her feet.
"I’ll recover. It’s the backlash from trying to pinpoint the source of the power. I guess the person doesn’t want us finding him," Alexa explained, coughing slightly into the palm of her hand.
"Is anything wrong?" A deep voice came from his side, snapping him back to reality.
Kieran immediately turned to Jacob, waving his hands dismissively.
"No, not at all. I’m perfectly fine," Kieran replied.
"If you are still thinking about joining our faction, perhaps I can show you our system and spaceships. I bet you they’ll be nothing to regret" Jacob said, confusing that for his worries.
As much as he desperately wanted to recruit Kieran, he didn’t want to force him into making any decisions.
"No. I’ve made up my mind... I’ll be joining the Blue Fang faction."
That was no longer a topic to talk on.
Anita stood up for him against Nellyx, who was hell-bent on placing the claims on him.
Even though they still had to make a deal and he wasn’t completely let off, that alone was enough to earn them his respect.
In fact, he felt slightly indebted to the faction already. Joining was a favor he was doing to both them and himself.
It was no longer a thing to debate on.
To him, they posed the actual meaning of being Awakeneds.
"Very well then, if you’re sure... We’ve already reached AFO, and in a few minutes from now, you’ll be an official recruit for our faction," Jacob said, heaving a relieved sigh.
Despite the fact that he offered the option, he didn’t even want to let Kieran have that chance.
Any other faction could snatch him in a blink of an eye.
Just as they completed their little talk, the hover car came to a pause. The doors automatically slid up, showing a clear view of the building.
Jacob came out first, Kieran behind him.
"This is the AFO main branch," Jacob made a brief introduction with a casual gesture of his hand.
Kieran took in the sight of the building one more time, after which the two slowly alighted the stairs leading to the main entrance of the building.
Even from the distance, Kieran could hear the chatter from the front of the AFO building.
Right in front of the AFO, there was a small crowd of people from different factions, each advertising their factions.
"It’s just like I expected. Most factions are becoming desperate for members, and they’ve already started placing people in front of the AFO to recruit members," Jacob voiced out his thoughts, glad that he had taken the decision to bring Kieran to the AFO himself.
’It’s logical, to say the least... If the factions could offer more, then they’d immediately be able to recruit the new members who came to register, altering their choices... But that wouldn’t have worked for me, since my case was a bit special,’ Kieran thought to himself as he walked slightly behind Jacob.
While Jacob was worried about someone trying to recruit Kieran, Kieran had already thought of that as well.
His condition was special, since he had indirectly bitten a larger part of the apple, doing it in such a way that Jacob didn’t even know that he had been manipulated greatly.
Kieran knew instantly that none of the factions there would be willing to give out just as much as the Blue Fang had promised him for the recruitment points.
Jacob held a high rank in the Blue Fang faction and was able to take major decisions on his own... Looking at all the other people that were gathered there, he could tell that none of them were in the same position as Jacob.
’...They won’t be able to make such a decision without consulting the higher-ups...’
To Kieran, the Jacob and Anita duo had presented the best opportunity for him. They were desperate, and they were in a position to make a major decision unlike the others there.
As Jacob came up with Kieran, none dared walk up to the two. Seeing the steel plated band on Jacob’s hand, they instantly knew what it meant.
But out in the corner, unlike the rest that gave up from seeing Jacob... one particular person didn’t.
’That boy, ahhh, what’s that I see? So much, so much... so much potential, unbridled talents... The Nelkon family must have him!’
