Chapter 190: Chapter 190: Revenge

"Raven? What’s wrong?" Inquired Celia, as she noticed the tense look on his face, before following his gaze right as a fireball came shooting out of the alley towards Raven.

Raven put his guard up, before pausing as he noticed that the fireball was weak and slow, a bemused look appearing on his face as he easily batted it away with the back of his hand as it closed in on him.

"What just...," He muttered, before his eyes widened in surprise as a small figure came sprinting out of the alley, charging straight towards him.

It was a young boy, appearing to be around twelve or thirteen. He had a look of immense hatred in his eyes, and he was clutching a kitchen knife in his hands as he shot towards Raven.

"I’ll kill you!" He yelled furiously as he closed in on Raven, driving the knife forward.

Raven swiftly sidestepped across to evade the thrust of the blade, before grabbing the boy’s wrist with his right hand, and then striking the back of his neck with the side of his palm, knocking him out.

The knife fell out of the boy’s grasp and hit the ground with a clatter, Raven catching him as he began to fall over.

"What...just happened?" Frowned Raven in bewilderment.

"Why’d this kid just try to kill you? Do you recognize him?" Celia asked him.

"No, can’t say I do. His scent isn’t ringing any bells either," Raven shook his head.

"Maybe he’s the kid of one of the corrupt Nobles we killed?" Suggested Celia uncertainly.

"I don’t think that’s the case. Based on the feel of his Mana, I’m pretty sure he’s a Commoner. I suppose there’s no point in guessing without any leads to go off of. Let’s take him to the outpost and question him, maybe someone else put him up to this," Remarked Raven, lifting the kid up and putting him over his shoulder.

"Yeah, alright. Careful, he might try to attack you if he wakes up on the way back."

"I mean, even if he does, I doubt he can do any real damage to me. But if I do sense him starting to regain consciousness, I’ll use my Drowse Spell on him to put him back to sleep," He replied, before the two of them began heading back to the outpost.

It didn’t take them long to get to the building, they explained the situation to the other Knights as they entered, before using a rope to restrain the boy to a chair, along with a Mana-blocking collar Magic Item.

"Okay, that should keep him from doing any damage if he struggles after regaining consciousness," Said one of the other Knights.

"Yeah...I feel bad about this though, restraining a kid like this," Responded Raven with a conflicted look on his face, before stepping towards the boy and placing a hand on top of his head, using the Stamina Recovery Spell to wake him up.

"Wha...? Where am I...?" Muttered the boy groggily, his eyelids fluttering open before he tensed as he caught sight of Raven, immediately trying to lunge at him, before realizing that he was restrained, "D-Damn it, let me go!"

"Calm down, we aren’t going to hurt you," Celia assured him gently.

"Yeah, we just want to know why you attacked me," Added Raven.

"Grr...! Because I have to kill you! You...you killed my father, so I have to get revenge! And then...and then my mother can finally smile again!" Cried the boy, seething with rage as tears welled up in his eyes.

"You’re a Commoner, right? Well, I’ve never killed any Commoners, the only people I’ve ever killed are corrupt Nobles. What was your father’s name?"

"His name was Recil Filn, and you’re lying, because yeah, he was a Commoner, and you killed him!" Snapped the boy furiously.

"Sorry, but I’ve never heard that name before, I think you might be mistaken, I never-..."

"You did, damn it! My father was a member of the Ruby Village church, you killed him when you destroyed it! I know the truth, my mother saw it and told me! She told me that you’re a Monster pretending to be a human, that you’ll kill everyone, so I have to kill you!"

"Is it possible that his father was one of the Inquisitors from back then?" Raven asked Celia and the other Knights quietly, as the boy frantically strained against his restrained, trying to break free.

"No, I doubt it. It’s highly unlikely. Since the Inquisition Squad is kept a secret from the general public, Inquisitors aren’t allowed to have families. They would need to retire if wanted to start a family, which means that any active Inquisitors wouldn’t have wives or children," One of the other Knights informed him.

"In that case, the only explanation I can think of is that this kid’s father must have been a member of the clergy serving under the priest who put you through the Homunculus Ritual. He must have been in the church when you lost control after the ritual," Surmised Celia.

"Yeah, that’s the only explanation that makes sense, either that or the kid was lied to," Nodded Raven with a grimace.

"So, what should we do with the kid?"

"I’m not sure, this is a pretty unusual case. I’ll contact HQ and check with the Commander," Replied Raven, glancing at the boy before heading for the phones.

Meanwhile, in the Capital...

"Commander, you’ve got a call from Captain Raven."

"Hm? Alright, put him through," Replied Jules, picking up her phone and putting it up to her ear.

"Hello?"

"Yes, what is it, Captain Raven? Has something happened?"

"Yeah, I’ve got a bit of a situation here," Sighed Raven, before explaining what had happened.

Jules was quiet for a moment as he finished his explanation, taking a beat to mull it over.

"I see, that does sound like quite a troubling predicament. Alright, then...leave it to me. I’ll come there and handle it myself. Given that you’re the object of this child’s anger, it’s probably for the best if you don’t involve yourself any further."

"I get what you’re saying, but...I don’t know if that’s the right thing to do. If what he says is true, then this is my fault, so I should be responsible for handling it."

"Assuming it’s true, it wouldn’t be your fault. The ones to blame would be Priest Dietre Opal and the Inquisitors who followed him, but they’re all already dead. So, I’ll take over this case and handle it myself. I’ll first contact the church and ask about the boy’s father, to confirm his identity and whether he was actually a member of the church. After that, I’ll head to your outpost and pick up the child."

As she ended the call, Jules then contacted the church, confirming that the boy’s father was indeed a member of the church under Priest Dietre Opal, and that he’d been killed on the night Raven was turned into a Homunculus.

She then headed to Amethyst City with Tilda, picking up the boy before heading to Ruby Village, where he lived with his mother.

"Is this the place?" She asked him, as they stopped in front of an apartment.

The boy wasn’t restrained anymore, though they’d taken away his knife and kept the Mana-blocking collar on him, as a precaution in case he tried to fight them off.

"Yeah. It’s the third room on the second floor," He muttered quietly, a tense look on his face.

They headed into the building and up to the second floor, before knocking on the door of the room the boy specified.

The sound of footsteps approaching echoed out, before the door opened, a woman peering out. Her hair was messy and unkempt, she had dark circles under her eyes and an unsettling look in her eyes.

"I-I know you, you’re the Commander of the Knights. O-Oh, I see, my son must have killed that evil Monster, you must be here to thank us, right?!" She exclaimed as her face lit up.

"No, I...I’m sorry, mom, but I failed. I couldn’t kill him, I-...," Began the boy remorsefully, before he was cut off as she slapped him across the face furiously.

He fell over and hit the floor with a thud, before shrinking back against the wall, trembling.

"How could you?! Th-That...that THING killed my husband, your father! And you just come waltzing back here after failing to avenge him?! How could you fail?!" She screamed hysterically, before Tilda swiftly restrained her and pulled her away from the boy.

"I-I’m sorry...I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry...," Whimpered the boy as tears welled up in his eyes.

"She’s clearly traumatized and unstable, and she’s been lashing out at her son," Jules thought to herself sympathetically, before speaking, "It’s going to be alright, ma’am. We’ll get you the help you need. We’ll put your son under the temporary care of an orphanage, the both of you will be provided with therapeutic help. We’ll take care of you until you’re both mentally well again. It’s going to be okay, I promise."
