Chapter 306: Chapter 306 Wearing Old Clothes _1 Chapter 306: Chapter 306 Wearing Old Clothes _1 “Why are you running away at the sight of me? Weren’t you quite tough before?”
In Jiang Minmin’s hand was a red jacket, crafted from cheap material in a poorly imitated suit style. It was evidently low-quality at just one glance.
Nan Fei instinctively skimmed her gaze over the clothing in her hand.
Jiang Minmin proudly raised her hand, lifting her chin as she smugly said, “I know you’re jealous, but too bad! Your jealousy is useless. If you can’t afford it, you can only look, always wearing clothes discarded by others.”
Then, as if something just occurred to her, she stifled her laughter, “Do you remember when you were young, following me around, picking up the clothes I discarded? I recall refusing to give them to you, but you still eagerly asked me for them. Hahahaha…it’s just too hilarious.”
As for what Jiang Minmin was talking about, Nan Fei indeed remembered. Back then, when her parents were away evading the one-child policy, she was living with her grandmother.
Many rural people used to be poor, so it was common not to be able to afford new clothes. Unless worn to tatters, they wouldn’t bear to throw clothes away. An older child’s outgrown clothes would be given to the younger children of relatives.
The clothes left over from their relatives’ children would also be worn by the children at home.
This was all quite usual.
Nan Fei still remembered that when she was younger and smaller than Jiang Minmin, her grandmother would dress her in Jiang Minmin’s clothes. But her aunt had a sharp tongue. She bragged around the village, angering her grandmother who then refused to accept their old clothes any longer.
In truth, they never actively asked for hand-me-downs.
They were always brought over by her aunt, in a show of charity and saving face. After she’d tarnished their reputation around, they stopped accepting them.
Now that Jiang Minmin suddenly brought this up, Nan Fei’s face unavoidably turned colder. She tilted her head, not feeling any shame, nor finding it hard to keep her head up.
Those feelings of inferiority, she’d tasted too much of them in her previous life. She’d long learned to face them calmly, without wavering.
Poverty isn’t scary, feeling inferior is what’s truly terrifying.
“Then just laugh to death!” she said, her face expressionless.
Jiang Minmin hadn’t expected that reaction from her, and she paused before sneering with a twisted expression, “Your mouth really is becoming more and more insolent. Had I known you’d turn out to be such a killjoy, I would’ve killed you when we were children!”
Had she known that Nan Fei would be this annoying when she grew up, she would’ve seized more of the numerous opportunities to kill her when they were children.
Now there’s no longer a chance to lay a hand on her.
“Young lady, are you still buying or not?” the clothes seller urged.
In truth, Jiang Minmin didn’t really fancy the piece of clothing, and found the price too high–it was over 30 yuan! She’d just stolen 50 yuan from Liu Yongxia.
Spending 30 yuan on a single piece of clothing seemed painful to just think about.
However, in front of Nan Fei, if she didn’t buy it, she’d lose face. She just wanted to see the look of envy and hatred in Nan Fei’s eyes.
“I’m buying it!” Jiang Minmin tilted her head proudly in front of Nan Fei, looking down on others as if from her high horse, “Some people will never be able to afford a nice piece of clothing in their entire lives.”
Nan Fei barely held back her laughter, the clothes on her were a gift from Sister Chen. Although not the best, the fabric was at least not something you could buy in the village.
Jiang Minmin, with her shallow taste, was actually trying to pump herself up beyond her means.
Such people will never end well.
