Chapter 287: Chapter 287: A Critical Moment_1 Chapter 287: Chapter 287: A Critical Moment_1 “Lock the front door.” Nan Fei knew that Zhang Fengmei was soft-hearted and there would undoubtedly be conflicts later. She had a bellyful of anger pent up inside her, and knew that the encounter with her aunt’s family today was going to be anything but pleasant.
Her mother was too kind-hearted. If she were present, she would only end up being bullied.
Jiang Yang, who’d been lurking in the corner until now, overheard Nan Fei’s words. He moved faster than Zhuanzhuan, dashing to the front door and locking it from the outside.
The layout of Nan Fei’s home consisted of the main house in the back and a courtyard in the front. The kitchen was a separate room in the courtyard. Once the courtyard’s gate was locked, the only way out would be to climb over the wall.
To deter thieves, rural houses often had glass shards or cactus plants lining the top of the courtyard walls, making them impossible to climb over.
Nan Fei was stunned at Jiang Yang’s display, the cold expression on her face slowly dissolving as her red lips curved into a small smile.
“See, Zhuanzhuan, I told you! My little brother isn’t a fool.”
“Yeah!” Zhuanzhuan nodded, “He’s actually very smart. I’ve dug out textbooks from fourth grade through high school these past few days, and he considers all them to be too simple.”
Feeling gratified and quite amazed, Zhuanzhuan said: “I never expected our little brother to be so clever. It’s a pleasant surprise! If only I had known earlier.”
“What would you have done differently if you’d known earlier?”
Nan Fei’s unexpected question made Zhuanzhuan pause before saying, baffled: “I would’ve been very happy!”
“You’re right! You would’ve indeed been very happy.” Nan Fei muttered, pulling her attention back to her aunt who was closing in.

Liu Yongxia charged over in a huff and started rolling up her sleeves from a distance. Her glaring eyes almost consumed by white. The slightly faint-hearted would have burst into tears at the sight.
Liu Yongxia felt a surge of anger rumbling inside her. She strode over to Nan Fei and, raising her thick, fat hand, aimed to slap her. She muttered abuses under her breath, “You brat, acting too big for your boots, you good-for-nothing…”
As the slap approached, Nan Fei stood still without even blinking, let alone moving aside or tilting her head.
Jiang Minmin, standing behind Liu Yongxia, watched with glee as Nan Fei was about to get slapped. Excitement caused her to nervously ball her hands into fists. If only she had a camera, she would’ve loved to photograph this moment- to look at whenever she was upset.
Zhuanzhuan clenched her fists tight, her eyes fixed on Nan Fei’s hands at her back. The anticipation made her body tremble slightly with excitement.
This feeling, something she had experienced as a child, was now more intense than ever. An indescribable sense of excitement caused her normally benign gaze to harden. She wasn’t the honest and gentle Jiang Zhuanzhuan anymore.
She eagerly looked at Nan Fei, anticipating her next move.
Jiang Yang’s blank face moved from Liu Yongxia to Zhuanzhuan, and he finally settled his gaze on Nan Fei. He squatted on the ground in a rather ungainly position, a look of stupefaction on his face – something he used to enjoy doing.
Just as things were at their most critical and an odd silence fell, Liu Yongxia suddenly felt a shiver of cold run up her spine, causing her hair to stand on end.
Before she got married, she was the notorious bad girl of the village who had even scratched her sisters-in-law faces raw in the ditch. After getting married, she never backed down.
With this in mind, Liu Yongxia put all her strength into the slap, hoping it would wipe away this fiercely attractive girl who tried to steal Minmin’s husband, with her beguiling fox-like face.
