Chapter 67: Annual sport I

Chapter 67

The sunray hit the ground softly, like shining glitters, as excitement buzzed like fireworks in the air. Today was the long-awaited annual Sports Day, and parents arrived with their kids—chatting, running around, holding seat tickets, and searching for their assigned seats.

Inside the changing room near the school ground, Katherine knelt to tie the final strap on Jasmine’s sports shoe while her daughter bounced excitedly in place, dancing with her light stick. Her cheerful face was already dabbed on her chubby cheeks.

"Careful, baby," Katherine warned gently, brushing back a curl that was sticking to Jasmine’s face.

"Mummy, it’s finally happening!" Jasmine beamed, tugging at her yellow-and-black striped headband, grinning widely.

"Yes, baby," Katherine caressed her face adoringly. "You make mama proud," Katherine said, poking her gently on the forehead.

"Yes, mommy," Jasmine boasted, her chest puffed, head raised, and nose high.

Behind them, Hanith sat on a low bench, quietly lacing up his shoes with his brows creased in focus. He pulled the laces tight, in his own world, and Katherine watched him for a moment, her heart squeezing at the sight. Then she walked towards him.

Katherine blinked and crouched in front of him gingerly. "You okay, baby?"

Hanith nodded stiffly, fingers fumbling as he double-knotted the laces. "Y—yeah," he responded with a little stutter.

Jasmine suddenly piped up from the side, twirling her hair as her voice was high and hopeful. "Is Uncle Piano coming?"

Katherine swallowed the lump in her throat at the harmless yet heavy question. Her lips parted slightly, but no immediate answer came out. Aaron had left to his ’company’ two days ago for an urgent issue.

Katherine smiled and patted his cheeks adoringly and said, "Uncle Piano said he’d try, remember?"

Hanith looked up this time, his gaze flickered, his eyes mirroring Jasmine’s—filled with quiet hope and uncertainty. "But will he really come?"

Katherine’s chest clenched and she wetted her lower lip, her throat bobbed as she kept her voice soft. "I believe he will," she grinned, patting his cold hands with her warm hands. "You know he doesn’t like to miss anything pertaining to you, pumpkin."

Jasmine nodded, her shoulders slumped as she bent to adjust his socks while Hanith didn’t say anything and his gaze fell to the floor, sighing, his fingers tightening on the hem of his shirt.

State City

Meanwhile, across the city, Aaron sat at the head of a long, dull conference room, surrounded by people—with stiff suits, squirming, papers and coffee on the table.

His finger tapped the table agitatedly, waiting for the MD to finish explaining the new project.

"...embracing the new trend with AI..."

Aaron rolled his eyes, tugging his tie. He was feeling hot as he gestured for his PA to come closer. He bit his lip as he noticed in his peripheral vision that the MD visibly stiffened, but that was the least of Aaron’s concerns.

"Should we move the headquarters to a new city, or should I just open another branch?" Aaron muttered, his brow furrowed in all seriousness while his PA—Jade—widened his eyes.

His phone lay face down in front of him, vibrating occasionally with messages he wasn’t checking. His eyes flicked repeatedly to his wristwatch, each passing minute slipping away at his patience. He just wanted to leave and fly down to New City to cheer for his children.

Aaron’s heart twisted when he remembered the way their faces fell last night when he told them he wasn’t sure he’d be there.

But dammit! Aaron didn’t know meetings could be long and boring like this. He couldn’t miss the day for the world.

He tapped his feet in agitation. It felt like time was dragging, and the speaker was talking at 0.5x speed, which was annoying. Aaron scrunched his face and hit his table.

Everyone turned their heads to him, but he didn’t care. He was the boss here.

"I’m sorry," Aaron finally cut in with a brisk voice. "I have to go." He stood, and the chair scraped the ground, releasing a screeching sound in the process.

Without waiting for a response, he grabbed his jacket, shoved his phone into his pocket, and marched out of the room as Jade ran after him, holding a file to his chest.

"Boss, you haven’t finalised the new—"

Aaron didn’t let him finish and raised his hand. "Take care of it, Jade," he said, then a smile tugged on his lip. "My kids and my woman are waiting for me." He glanced at his wristwatch again. "Forward the meeting to me, I’ll check later," and strode out of the building.

When the private helicopter dropped him on the building rooftop, he took the elevator down and jumped into the prepared available car.

Entering the car, he tossed his jacket into the backseat, loosened his tie in a tug as he sped up.

"Come on," he muttered, tapping the steering wheel, driving through the busy road as his eyes darted between traffic and the GPS.

New City

Back at the school, the sports event was in full swing, with children running around in colorful jerseys, chattering and cheering as whistles blew from one of the teachers to direct the kids to a safe place. Parents clapped, hollered happily under the tent at the sidelines.

Katherine sat at the edge of the crowd, hands folded in her lap, her leg shaking from nerves as she watched every child-parent pair and tried not to let disappointment settle on her chest.

He’d come, right? She clasped her hands tightly to stop her anxiousness.

Jasmine and Hanith stood near the starting line, both visibly deflated. Even Jasmine had stopped bouncing, her arms now crossed and a slight pout on her lips, while Hanith’s shoulders slumped and his eyes darted around expectantly.

Katherine rose slowly from the bench, wiping her palms on her jeans. She was about to walk over to them when she heard the rustle of hurried footsteps on the grass.

Whipping her head quickly, she spotted Aaron jogging across the field, slightly breathless, his shirt untucked and tie hanging loose around his neck. His eyes swept the crowd until they landed on them—on her, on the twins.

A smile subconsciously found its way to her lips as she breathed out in relief. He came—her heart skipped.

Jasmine let out a squeal, standing up from her seat. "Uncle Piano!"

Aaron dropped to one knee as Jasmine ran full-speed into his arms, wrapping herself tightly around his neck. He held her close, smiling into her shoulder.

"I thought you weren’t coming," she whispered with a shaky giggle as she sniffed.

"Wouldn’t miss this for the world," he murmured back, brushing her hair from her face and pressing a kiss to her forehead.

Hanith stood a little back, his eyes wide, shocked to see him and uncertain whether to step forward or stay rooted. But Aaron reached out with one arm and gently tapped his nose with his finger.

"Hey champ," Aaron said, his smile lopsided, eyes soft. "I’m here."

Hanith blinked, then slowly stepped forward. He didn’t speak, just leaned into Aaron’s side and let himself be hugged.

"You came," she breathed out, walking closer to them, meeting Aaron’s gaze. She clutched the hem of her dress as her heart continued to thud in her chest.

He was here for them.

Aaron grinned, breath still a little shaky. "Yes, babe. To be here for you and our children." Aaron looked at her, eyes lingering for a moment.

Katherine lowered her gaze, cheeks warming, and she cleared her throat. "Well, good. The kids wouldn’t stop asking and worrying that you won’t come," she said.

And you too... a snarky comment from her head as she placed her hand on her chest to stop the racing.
