Chapter 57: New house
Chapter 57
Aaron leaned back in the driver’s seat, one hand loosely on the steering wheel, the other resting on his lap as he watched the twins through the rearview mirror. Jasmine was humming a random song under her breath, swinging her feet in the air, while Hanith clutched his sketchpad on his lap like it was the most important thing in the world.
He swallowed a breath and shot them a smile. "Alright, chumps. Ready for a little surprise?"
Jasmine’s head tilted immediately, her eyes lit up in excitement. "A surprise? What kind?"
"You’ll see." Aaron chuckled and winked, starting the car. "But I hope you’re ready to scream."
Jasmine gasped, her hands flew to her mouth. "Is it scary?!" Her eyes widened.
"No." He shook his head. "Good scream," he corrected with a grin.
The drive wasn’t long, but the kids’ curiosity made every minute stretch as they glanced through the window happily while Aaron said nothing, still grinning. He just let the anticipation build as he stared at their eyes taking in everything. When he finally pulled into a quiet, private street, he parked in front of a newly built building with a beautiful exterior, soft lights lining the walkway, and glass doors reflecting the afternoon sky.
The twins stepped out of the car cautiously, eyes darting around.
"Where are we?" Jasmine asked slowly, clutching Hanith’s hand.
Aaron bent down to their level and gestured toward the entrance. "This," he said, "is Daddy’s new home." He was proud of himself. He had been planning this private building for days. Now it was complete, and here he was with his family.
Jasmine and Hanith’s eyes widened.
"You’re moving?" Jasmine’s voice cracked slightly, sadness tugging her lips down. "Away?"
Aaron quickly shook his head, brushing a hand against her cheek. "No, chump. I’m staying. Not leaving. But I’m no longer staying in the hotel. This is my personal place. Somewhere I can stay permanently. Somewhere near you and your mommy. Always," he rushed out and explained.
Hanith blinked, yet his grip on Aaron’s sleeve tightened.
"Come," Aaron said softly, pulling them to the house, and he unlocked the door.
The house was warm, bright, with a touch of modern design — it felt cozy and personal. The interior design was beautiful and homey, yet the space didn’t show off wealth but screamed home.
The living room was painted soft grays and cream, while around the corner, the kitchen was filled with appliances, familiar mugs hanging neatly on a rack, and the exact brand of tea Katherine always drank sitting prettily on the marble counter.
Aaron guided the twins in, watching as they walked slowly like they were afraid of dirtying the ground, their eyes growing bigger.
"Your rooms are this way." He led them through a short hallway. "Jasmine, here."
Jasmine rushed into the room and gasped. A bed with pink sheets, a bookshelf filled with storybooks and fairytales, a wall filled with star stickers, and a corner already packed with dolls and plushies.
"Uncle Piano!" she yelled, bouncing on the bed, squealing when she saw her name carved on a wooden nameplate above the door.
Hanith’s room was next, simple yet equally thoughtful — a bed with navy covers, and a shelf filled with comic books he liked, a desk, and beside the window was a box of art supplies.
Hanith ran a hand across the desk slowly, his gaze taking in the room. "You know my favourite colors," he said, barely above a whisper.
"I remember," Aaron replied. He grinned, ruffling his head.
There was a beat of silence, then Hanith called out softly, "Can we sleep here tonight?"
Jasmine peeked her head out of her room. "Yes, let’s stay tonight!" she bounced happily. "I like my room!" she squealed.
Aaron paused, hesitating as his eyes moved to the entrance of the living room where she stood — Katherine.
Katherine stilled, her fingers clutching the tin of tea he had purposefully placed to catch her attention.
"How do you know I liked this brand of tea?" she asked softly, not quite looking at him yet as she stared at the tin.
Aaron straightened, stuffing his hands into his pockets as he leaned forward a little. "I know more than you think."
Katherine looked at him now for the first time since they arrived at the building, then looked around the space. Her steps were cautious, almost like she was afraid to touch anything. She moved toward the kitchen, letting her fingers trail along the edge of the counter, the dining set, the tiny potted plant near the sink that resembled the one she had years ago in the apartment they once stayed in together.
Her hand paused on a small ceramic spoon rest shaped like a cat. She blinked in surprise.
"This..." she whispered in a soft voice. "This feels like..."
"Home?" Aaron offered gently. He knew she liked the spoon since forever, and he did everything in his power to get it back here for her.
She didn’t answer, yet she didn’t deny it either.
The kids came running into the kitchen, Jasmine carrying a Spider-Man toy and stepping forward to tug her hand gently. "Mommy," she said, "can we stay here for dinner?"
Katherine glanced at Aaron and his eyes met hers, waiting for her response.
"I didn’t plan anything big," he rubbed the back of his neck nervously, a tinge of pinkish patch on his cheeks. "But the fridge’s full. I stocked it with everything you like. Even the brand of butter you once said was better than the normal butter."
Katherine gave a soft snort. "That was a joke."
Aaron shrugged with a lopsided grin. "I took it seriously," he said. "Everything you say is always serious."
Katherine sighed, brushing her hair back. "We didn’t bring clothes."
"The rooms are already stocked with clothes." And she blinked.
Aaron stepped closer, stopping just a space from touching her. He took the tip of her hair and placed a kiss on it softly. "Everything has been set for you and them," he muttered. "I want to be nearby, and you are always welcome to be here," he said, his gaze burning into her, and Katherine felt her throat parched, dry from lack of saliva.
Katherine gulped, her throat bobbed, then quickly turned from his gaze. "I’ll make the dinner."
