Babies' Secret: My Ex Wants Me Back! -
Chapter 55: Space
Chapter 55: Space
Chapter 55
Aaron didn’t try to talk to Katherine nor stalk her like before. He gave her space—space to understand and accept everything. He couldn’t rush her.
Even though he promised to chase her, there were times he needed to back off and give her space. And he wanted to respect that. It took every will to stop himself from running his loser ass to her.
God! It was hard.
His body screamed, his heart howled to go to her and do everything, but his mind and brain held him off.
So instead, with good self-restraint, Aaron buried himself in work—meetings, approvals of contracts, conversations with investors, etc.—to blur past time.
He also kept his distance not because Katherine was scared of him but because of his mother—his mother.
And he couldn’t help but wonder, what exactly did his mother do to her? He’d asked before, tried to coax it out, but Katherine never answered directly. Just vague responses. Katherine wanted to shield her children from Brenda.
But what has his mother done to her to make her like that?! Was there more than what he knew?
An opportunity came to help him—a short trip to another city. With this, he’d be able to restrict himself for some time. Just three days. At least with that, Katherine would have calmed down. Normally, he would have gone immediately, but he hesitated and was torn because of two things:
To go and give her space.
Not to go and be run over to her when she called or needed him.
So complicated!
He’d texted Katherine earlier to inform her about his trip, and that was why he was waiting outside her apartment building—to take a look at the twins—well, and Katherine.
Aaron stood outside, leaned against his car, a suitcase by his feet, fingers clenched around the handle as he looked at Katherine coming out of the building.
Her arms were crossed uncaringly, and her face was unreadable. Aaron swallowed the lump in his throat, his hand going to the back of his head.
"Hi," he murmured softly, waving his hand, but Katherine shrugged her shoulders, and his gaze went to the kids trailing behind her.
"I’m leaving for three days," he told her, his eyes darting all over her body, hungrily taking her in like a starved man. God, he missed her and he was going to miss her.
He blinked twice, cleared his throat as he smiled softly, "It’s urgent. A deal I can’t miss," he explained.
Katherine nodded, arms crossed on her chest. "We’ll be fine," she bit out, and that was all she said.
And Aaron grimaced. No extra words, no soft glance or smile, just a curt nod and arms across her chest like a shield. But he didn’t push. He glanced over to the twins who were peeking from behind Katherine.
He walked a little and saw Katherine move back. He winced and crouched to the kids’ level and wrapped his arms around them.
Jasmine squeezed him tight, looking at him with adorable eyes. "Will you come back with gifts?" she asked softly, her arms clutching his shirt.
Aaron didn’t mind the front of his shirt getting crumpled, and he chuckled, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes due to Katherine’s unbothered reaction earlier.
"Of course," he muttered, caressing her head while Hanith held onto his sleeve a second longer than usual, not saying anything, and Aaron rubbed his head gently.
Jasmine moved her lips to his ear, "We are going to make Mommy call you," Aaron quickly turned to her to see Jasmine smile, "so do your best," she grinned, and Aaron looked at Hanith who also nodded in agreement with his sister.
Aaron felt his heart thump, and he stood, his gaze drifting back to Katherine whose gaze wasn’t on them.
"Take care," he said, his voice low.
Katherine nodded again with indifference. "You too," she said and turned to leave as the kids followed her. Jasmine animatedly made a calling gesture and Aaron nodded.
And that was it.
On the private plane, Aaron sat by the window, head resting against the cool glass as he replayed the earlier interaction with Katherine—her stiff posture, her silence and her indifference, the way she didn’t meet his eyes.
Aaron sighed deeply and hoped the kids’ plan would work, and by the time he came back, they’d be back closer than before.
He could only hope.
Hope was a great thing for humans to look forward to, to believe in, and to expect.
.
Katherine was very sure that Aaron wouldn’t have arrived in the other city when Jasmine asked almost every hour, while Hanith nodded with her.
"When will Uncle Piano call?" her voice chirped, her eyes twinkled, following Katherine around the house.
Katherine only gave vague responses, forcing a smile, her brows creased from Jasmine’s pressing questions. "Soon, baby," she responded, working on anything in the house to take her mind off Aaron.
Jasmine looked at her and went to the table, taking out the art book and sketching, Hanith pushing colors to her whenever she asked.
Katherine continued flickering her gaze at the twins. They were silent, and she couldn’t help but want to know what the kids were drawing and mumbling to each other. She was itching to know, but she respected their space as she kept wiping the same place over and over again.
After a while, Jasmine took the sketchbook to her, while Hanith trailed behind. "Mommy, see," she grinned, showing Katherine the art she drew.
Four human doodles—one looked like a man, two kids, and a mother. All holding one another’s hands.
Family.
Her heart thundered around her ribcage as she blinked, her hands clammy from holding the napkin in her hand, giving them a small smile.
"But Mommy, we miss Uncle Piano. Don’t you miss him too?" Jasmine whispered, holding the sketchbook against her chest.
"It’s okay, kids," she clapped her hands, brushing the question off effortlessly. "Let’s get you to bed," she mumbled, urging them to their room.
Later in her room, Katherine found herself checking her phone more than usual. She didn’t know why her heart wrenched in her chest. First, she had been waiting for Aaron’s texts and visits until he messaged her this morning, yet when she saw him this morning, she didn’t know how to behave and chose to do the normal thing she could do to shield herself.
Indifference.
She wore that mask like armor. Now that Aaron was some cities away, she couldn’t help but worry about him. She really hoped her earlier indifference didn’t make him pull away from her.
She groaned, wrapping her blanket over her head, throwing her legs in the air as she scrolled past Aaron’s moments under the blanket.
To his private account, she saw a picture of Aaron standing in a sleek hotel kitchen, apron slightly crooked, an omelet on the plate that looked... rough, at best. The caption beneath it read:
"Trying. For them. And you."
Katherine felt her throat parch, staring at his rolled sleeves, his arm bulged, and she gulped. Yet her lips curled up at the beautiful nonsense on the plate.
But as soon as she felt the smile on her face, she pushed it away and looked at the picture once again, then turned to the side of her bed and pulled the blanket tighter over her head.
Does she really deserve this?
She asked herself and sighed, closing her eyes and hoping the night could carry her worries away.
