Chapter 29: Beautiful Family

Chapter 29

"Mommy, mommy!" Jasmine called loudly, running to the room, her face scrunched dramatically, with her arms at her sides.

"What happened, darling?" Katherine groaned from the bed, rubbing her sleepy eyes groggily as she stifled a yawn. Weekends were meant for sleeping in to one’s heart’s desire with zero to no disturbance. But hell to her Sherlock—she had kids.

"We don’t mean to wake you—" Hanith mumbled as Jasmine cut in.

"But cereal has finished," Jasmine finished.

Shit! Katherine cursed internally. She had made a mental note to buy it when coming from work yesterday but she forgot. Interrupted sleep—half sleep—was the price to pay for not buying the cereal.

Katherine sighed, removing the blanket. "Get ready in 20, we are going to the store to get the necessary things." She’d use the opportunity to fill in groceries also.

"Yay!" Jasmine jumped, pulling Hanith with her out of the door before stopping. "Uncle Piano must come too," and she ran off with her brother trailing after her.

"What—" Katherine wasn’t able to refuse with Jasmine’s pure laughter filling the house. She exhaled, took her phone from the nightstand to call him. And she hoped he would be busy and wouldn’t have the time.

Luck not being on her side, Aaron agreed and responded he would come in a jiffy, to her dismay.

Wasn’t he supposed to be busy with office work? she thought, face-palming herself as she walked to the bathroom.

.

Aaron pushed the cart slowly beside Katherine as Jasmine bounced ahead excitedly, grabbing things off the shelves.

Aaron had a smile on his face, liking the little time he was able to have with his family—his children and his—he watched the twins especially, running from one shelf to another, picking and dropping snacks while he followed.

"This isn’t what we came to the store for," she grumbled, yet she had a twinkle in her eyes.

"Let them be," Aaron said. He didn’t mind spending all his life savings on them. Just a word or a point, they were getting it without a blink.

"You are spoiling them."

He chuckled softly, "They need all the spoiling in the whole world," he responded, he himself adding more cookies, chocolates, and chips into the cart.

"Pick one treat each," he said, winking discreetly at the kids.

Jasmine and Hanith looked at each other, then to Katherine, who wasn’t watching, shared a secret nod, and picked two each.

Katherine swiftly turned her gaze to them, catching them in action. "Hey! That’s not what he said!" she cautioned, gesturing for them to return them.

Hanith hugged the snack to his chest, staring wide-eyed while Jasmine pouted, staring at her with big round eyes, blinking adorably, "But Mommy..."

And Katherine felt like she’d been shot in the heart with their cuteness making her breath caught in her throat.

Aaron chuckled, obviously knowing that Katherine was already weakened by their combined puppy eyes and said, "Let them have it. It’s just one more."

"Just this one," she mumbled, walking ahead as the twins high-fived each other.

After finishing picking the necessary stuff—with a little bickering from the twins—they strolled to the line to pay. Aaron brought out his card to pay as an elderly woman behind them watched them fondly.

The woman smiled warmly, looking from the children to the parents. "You all make a beautiful family."

Katherine stiffened, clearly caught off guard by the woman’s statement. Did they look like a family? Her heart skipped at the thought.

While Aaron’s brows lifted, clearly surprised as he smiled and returned the kind gesture to the woman.

Jasmine grinned, quickly holding both Katherine and Aaron’s hands, cheerful as ever. "Thank you!" she chirped, while Hanith hid shyly behind Katherine’s leg, not saying a word.

When he was done with the payment, they walked out of the store to where the car was parked. Aaron, lifting all the bags, noticed Katherine was noticeably quiet since the woman’s comment.

Aaron slowed his pace to match hers, then walked beside her. He licked his dry lips. "If you don’t like it, I can go back and correct the woman." The words were heavy on the tip of his voice, but he had to reassure Katherine. If she didn’t want them to be seen or called a family, so be it—for now.

Katherine shrugged, giving a little smile as she tried to sound unbothered. "It’s fine. She didn’t mean anything by it."

Aaron nodded, walking to the car boot and dumped the bags in it.

The car ride was tense, yet it wasn’t. Because—as Katherine put it to herself—while Jasmine, from the back seat, started singing a nursery rhyme, Hanith clapped in rhythm, shyly amused.

"A lion has a head, it has a big head and a very small waist—" Aaron joined in, singing along while tapping the wheel.

Katherine found herself smiling despite wanting to be herself. She was surprised Aaron knew the nursery rhyme—even she was lagging behind.

When did he have the time to know that?

Why was he doing this?

Because they are family?

No, she blinked, shaking the thought away. She was definitely not his family—but the twins were.

The car was filled with laughter from the kids, singing from one rhyme to another. It was harmonious, like a perfect family—while they weren’t.

When they got to the apartment, Aaron unloaded the bags, carried everything to Katherine’s door as she opened it, collecting the bags from him in the doorway.

"Do you want to come in?" Katherine offered gently, opening the door wider for him.

Aaron chuckled lightly, "No, I don’t want to overstay my welcome," he said softly, rubbing his hands on his jeans.

"Okay," she said.

"I’ll leave you guys to it," he murmured.

"Thanks... for coming," she said truthfully. The ride to the store and back was fun. And she enjoyed herself.

Aaron smiled, didn’t linger any longer, and left to finish his pending workload.

Katherine closed the door and went to the kitchen to unpack the groceries.

"Mommy, where’s Uncle Piano?" Jasmine asked, her eyes darting from the living room to the door.

"He has left, he had something to do urgently."

"Oh," the sadness in Jasmine’s voice made Katherine give her a small smile.

"You’ll see him soon," Katherine added to give her something to look forward to.

"Okay, Mommy," Jasmine smiled and left.

Katherine watched Jasmine’s silhouette disappear and turned to her unpacking. She reached into the last bag and found a small box.

She raised her brow and opened it, only to find a candy bar—her favorite, the one she didn’t grab but had stared at longingly in the store earlier.

As she took out the candy bar, a small note fell on the floor. She picked it up to see it was a note in Aaron’s handwriting.

"For your secret sweet tooth."

Katherine stared at it, stunned that he noticed her gaze on the candy, and a small involuntary smile made its way to her lips.

She blinked continuously in shock. "Nope. Not doing this. Not again," she muttered, fanning her face.
