Chapter 27: Aaron vs Mathew 1

Chapter 27

Outside the event hall, parents and guardians were arriving to pick up their children or wards as Katherine walked out, holding the twins tightly while their bags slung beside her.

The school had organized a little art exhibition for the children, and Katherine had requested a leave today to be there for the kids.

Jasmine was chattering non-stop about what had happened inside, her eyes twinkling with happiness as she talked about the art display. Katherine and Hanith listened, nodding when necessary and smiling to engage her retelling.

When they reached outside, they saw Mathew already waiting for them, dressed in a black jacket and faded jeans. Katherine tilted her head in surprise—she hadn’t expected to see him there.

He walked over calmly, holding a folded paper. When he reached them, he bent a little to give the twins a caress, then handed the paper to Jasmine, smiling.

"You left this behind the other day," he said.

Jasmine squealed excitedly, quickly collecting the paper from him. "It’s the one I made for Hanith!" she pouted, opening the drawing she had made.

Katherine smiled. "Thanks, Mathew. She was really upset about not being able to display it today," she said, remembering Jasmine’s crestfallen face earlier in the hall. Katherine had to promise her something else to cheer her up.

"Oops, sorry, chump," he said apologetically. "I should have brought it sooner," he muttered, ruffling her head.

"It’s okay, Uncle Matty," she waved her hand dismissively. "Thank you for bringing it," Jasmine grinned cheekily, hugging the paper.

Mathew rubbed his hands and looked around for any sign of Aaron. "Should I take you home?" he offered when he didn’t see him, but in that moment, a car drove in.

Aaron stepped out of his car and immediately frowned in displeasure, seeing Mathew already there with his kids—and with Katherine. But his eyes quickly moved to Katherine, and his gaze softened, smiling lovingly.

He brought out the bouquet he’d stopped to buy on his way and walked over. He kissed the twins, then handed the flowers to Katherine with a smile. Then he turned to Mathew, his jaw tightening with annoyance. His voice was low, just enough for Mathew to hear as he muttered,

"You seem awfully involved."

Mathew scoffed, unbothered by his comment. He turned to meet his stare. "Just doing what you weren’t around to do for years."

Aaron smiled tightly at the response. He wouldn’t lie—the statement punched him in the gut, but he smiled through his teeth.

"Motherfucker," he mumbled under his breath.

Aaron watched the kids running to his car and smirked at the little win over Mathew as the twins skipped ahead, unaware of the tension brewing between the two men.

Aaron stepped closer to Mathew, rubbing his face, stopping at the stubble on his jaw. His voice dropped an octave. "You don’t get to pretend you’re their father," he muttered, the words ground out between his teeth.

Mathew took a step closer too, his brow raised defiantly, yet his face held a mocking smile. "And you don’t get to step in after five years and act like this is all yours again."

Their eyes locked with intensity. Aaron’s fists twitched slightly, yet Mathew didn’t back down or flinch.

Katherine, noticing the clash between the men, stepped in. Her eyes raised in a glare, looking at both men but stopping at Aaron. Aaron flinched and moved back, unclenching his fist.

"Enough. Both of you," she snapped, her voice hard and firm, making Aaron gulp.

Aaron raised his hand a little in surrender, smiling at Katherine as Mathew turned away, adjusting his shirt.

"Mommy, Uncle Piano, aren’t you coming?" Jasmine yelled, and Katherine’s cold expression swiftly changed.

"We’re coming, buds," she turned to Aaron, gave him one last glare, and said, "Let’s get going."

The car ride was quiet as Aaron drove through the familiar hallway of Katherine’s neighborhood. The kids were asleep in the backseat as he tapped the steering wheel.

Aaron chewed his bottom lip as he recalled the way Jasmine laughed at Mathew, how Hanith liked to follow Mathew like a mother hen.

How natural it all seemed for them—but not for him. He had missed so many moments with the kids, yet that blondie hadn’t.

His eyes found their way to the rearview mirror to look at the kids cuddled together, and he felt his heart grow heavy.

Can I really fill that space? Can I really compete with the blondie and actually win the twins over?

Aaron was very sure that if the kids were asked to pick a favorite, without a beat, they’d choose blondie over him.

When they reached Katherine’s apartment, Aaron gently carried Jasmine, still sleeping, into Katherine’s arms.

Their hands brushed a little, and Katherine jumped slightly, smiling tiredly at him. "Thanks," she said softly.

Aaron nodded as he watched them walk inside, while Hanith waved sleepily before going in.

He arrived back at the suite and was very happy with the silence that greeted him. No nasal nagging from Amanda. He quickly glanced around the suite to confirm it was indeed empty. Only God knew where she went—and he didn’t care.

Aaron went to his room, unbuttoned his shirt as he dropped his car keys on the table. He unscrewed the water bottle and gulped it down, his Adam’s apple bobbing with every swallow.

After finishing the water, he squeezed the bottle, throwing it in the trash can before he took a seat at the edge of the sofa.

The room was quiet—a stark contrast to the noise in his head. He needed to find a way to be closer to the kids. To make an essential pact in their lives. They should feel him and be more comfortable with him than the blondie.

He was jealous and sad. And that motherfucker had said it all earlier.

Sonavabitch.

Aaron pulled out his phone and dialed his PA. He didn’t listen to what the man was saying and cut him off with a command.

"Get me every five-star rated book on parenting. I want them delivered to the suite by morning." He hung up immediately, threw his phone on the bed, and picked up his laptop.

He had so much work to do.

He opened his laptop and went to YouTube, typing into the search bar, "How to connect with your children." The glow from the laptop reflected on his eager face.

He’d missed too much already. He wasn’t going to miss more. He would start with the first step—knowing what it means to be a good father.
