Awakening the Divine Spark -
Chapter 191: Unexpected turn of events.
Chapter 191: Unexpected turn of events.
Lee heard rushed footsteps in the corridor, and when his cell’s door opened, he stood next to it, his disheveled hair covering his face.
"Don’t say anything!" Junior Elder Fan whispered, but even though he said it to Lee, it was more for the ears of the several people behind him.
Lee nodded, and followed the small crowd. The prison break had began.
Junior elder freed a bit more than dozen people and there was another fake-corrupt guard who did the same one floor above. Allegedly they had knocked out or killed their shift commander along with several other guards, and led the prisoners outside through the only entrance. It was brazen and desperate, but there simply wasn’t another exit.
When the two groups met, almost everyone, including Lee became angry. It was obvious that the larger the escaping party was, the easier it will be to locate them, but the elemental lord behind the escape intended to use most if not all his fellow inmates as a bait.
Even the most clueless escapee knew that the Nethermoon Sect will be on their heels before the sunrise. Therefore everyone had thought of their own plans b. Unfortunately the organizer immediately cut off all hopes.
He said, "Fan, Knox! Kill anyone who tries to separate from the group!"
No one expected this. In fact, several escapees intended to hide inside the sect for the time being and this command ruined their plans.
"Go! Lead the way!" The elemental lord behind the escape rushed the two fake traitors who led the crowd through the Nethermoon Sect under cover of the night.
Lee, of course, knew the route they were about to take, but stayed with the pack.
Elder Luo had prepared the finest escape route one could think of. It wasn’t a direct like, in fact, the escapees had to cover double the distance before they got to the river, but at all times they stayed out of sight, rushing through remote gardens or groves.
Occasionally they fake-stumbled in a lone couple, engrossed in romance or one or two enforcers from the Hall of Justice. Every time Junior Elder Fan and his colleague named Knox quickly killed anyone they came across of, and the crowd rushed forward.
The former prisoners still had their hands bound and couldn’t effectively help, but the two were more than enough to deal with the situation.
Ignoring the fact that they had to kill around forty to fifty people, all staged incidents, of course, the escape was flawless. They arrived at the river long before the sunrise and this was where the first skirmish was about to happen.
"There they are!"
"Kill all the criminals!"
Lee heard shouts behind him and froze for a heartbeat, similar to the rest. Surprisingly, it was only four men and a woman who caught up to them, and if everyone wasn’t in shackles, these people would’ve died within moments.
Realizing the enforcers had their weapons drawn and they wouldn’t be spared no matter what, the escapees madly counterattacked, swarming the opponents in a frenzied attempt to overwhelm them with numbers.
Two of the five enforcers turned out to be elemental masters and their swords lit up in flames as they cleaved the first pack of criminals in halves, but the escapees might’ve been desperate, but they weren’t stupid. The next sword attack was blocked by using the elemental shackles the escapees had on them, and that allowed Fan and Knox to finally deal with the opponents.
Using the many escapees as a shield, they killed the attackers one by one. Lee also helped, by jumping on the man in a white shirt, strangling him with his tied hands, and when Knox stabbed him, Lee happily picked a dagger from his waist.
As expected, besides the two traitors, there were only nine people left standing, everyone with some minor injuries. There were others who were still alive, but Fan and Knox mercifully relieved them of their suffering either by stabbing or directly cutting their heads off.
Lee wondered how the fake attack was organized and how exactly the Nethermoon Sect’s experts knew whom to kill in the darkness. Of course, there were those that needed to be left alive and the rest didn’t matter. Besides, the good guys also had to fake-die in believable fashion and afterwards properly play dead.
Be as it may, it was Elder Luo’s duty to make sure these attacks proceeded smoothly and so far everything was perfect.
"Alright! The boats are a bit downstream!" Junior Elder Fan said, throwing anxious looks around.
"Go!" The elemental lord said, and the group intended to rush away, when they noticed one of them pulling shoes off the dead female enforcer.
"What the fuck are you doing!" Knox barked, trying to keep his voice low.
"I can’t fucking run like this!" Lee hissed back.
"You bitch! You’ll get us all killed!" Knox took several angry steps toward Lee who suddenly jumped at him, landing right on his shoulders and plunged the dagger in Knox’s neck.
Even in the darkness everyone could see fountain of blood spraying from the poor guard, but Lee didn’t stop. He continued to stab Knox over and over again, while hissing like a poisonous snake, "How’s that, fucker? I told you, motherfucker, I’ll kill you if you dare to touch me, bitch!"
In the end, after appeasing his fake anger, Lee back-flipped off the man and kicked him in the dark waters flowing by. Then he spat in the river, threw the dagger at the dead body floating away and cursed the fake guard one more time. Then he went over to the dead woman to take her shoes and weapon.
It all happened within moments and no one managed to stop the person with the messy hair, resembling a crazed beast. But since there was nothing they could do, the elemental master said, "Lead the way, Fan. You just earned Knox’s share."
Lee, faking reluctance, followed the group, observing the dark surroundings. The previous act felt particularly satisfying. He almost felt like he had visited Freeda again and the sound of his own curses for some reason seemed as sweet as the cookies she used to bake for him.
So far everything went according to the plan.
There were three boats and while they would’ve been too few for the thirty escapees, for the group of ten it had to be enough. Now they were supposed to board them, at the sunset arrive at the village downstream and then switch to horses.
Somewhere on the way there had to be another ambush where the numbers of the escapees would be halved again, and Junior Elder Fan lethally wounded. Under everyone’s eyes Lee would take the rings from him and they could proceed anywhere the elemental lord wished.
The problem was that the moment they reached the boats, the second elemental lord, the one who up until now had not said a word, stabbed the organizer in the neck. He had picked a weapon after the previous battle and no one payed any attention to that, but the sudden attack came completely unexpected to all parties.
Four more people had relieved the supposedly dead Nethermoon sect’s enforcers of their weapons. Two of them gawked at the sight in disbelief, but the other two plunged their swords into the chests of the closest companions.
After killing the organizer, the second elemental lord immediately stabbed Junior Elder Fan, who fell to the ground before pulling his own weapon. Two more escapees were killed right after.
Now, besides Lee, only the remaining elemental lord and two more people stood, and Lee stared at them, cold sweat running down his spine. He wasn’t afraid they could do anything to him.
He could dive in the river or simply run off in one of the two available directions, and these guys with the shackles on their hands wouldn’t be able to catch him. After all – he had unlocked the ones that bound him right after the first skirmish.
More importantly, the sect master surely was watching them from somewhere and in the worst case scenario would appear at any moment. The problem was the junior elder, motionlessly lying on the ground. Even if the plan failed, Lee kind of didn’t want for the guy to die – he was one of the cool ones.
It was hard to say whether the three didn’t attack him on purpose or because he conveniently had fallen behind. After they were done with killing their fellow inmates, they turned to Lee few yards away.
In the dark he couldn’t discern the looks they had, but while the gears in his head wildly span, looking for the best course of action, he bent his knees, as if preparing for an attack, raised the sword in his hand, and hissed, "Come, bitches! Let’s see which one of you, cocksuckers, will make it!"
