Chapter 66: New Hunt
Chapter 66: New Hunt
As Lyra drifted off to sleep, Neo sat down in a chair beside her, his eyes scanning the room for any signs of danger.
Neo sat there for hours, his eyes never leaving the door as he listened for any sound that might indicate someone was approaching.
But then, without warning, a thick mist erupted around him, shrouding the room in an impenetrable veil.
Neo’s eyes widened, disoriented and partially blinded by the sudden fog.
He reached out to shake Lyra awake, but there was no response.
"It’s useless. She’s already under my power."
Suhana’s eyes gleamed glowed bright white. Her voice was like a gentle breeze, but it sent shivers down his spine.
"You’re quite the clever one, aren’t you?" she said, her words dripping with amusement. "I’ve been watching you, Neo. I must say, I’m impressed."
Neo’s heart skipped a beat as he stared at her, his mind racing with questions.
"What do you want?" he growled, trying to keep his voice steady.
Suhana just smiled, her lips curving upward in a sly smile. "I want to talk to you,"
Her eyes seemed to bore into Neo’s soul as she took a step closer to him.
"You know, a simple ’hello’ would have sufficed," Neo said, his voice filled with dry humor. "All this mist and dramatic entrance isn’t exactly good for my nerves."
Suhana’s smile faltered for a moment, before she laughed
"I apologize if I startled you. But I wanted to make an impression."
"Well, you certainly have my attention. And considering you’re standing here talking to me, I’m guessing you don’t plan on killing me... at least, not yet."
"Kill you?" she repeated, shaking her head. "No, Neo. I’m here to do the opposite. I want to help you."
Neo raised an eyebrow, his expression skeptical. "Help me?"
She nodded, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Yes. I know all about your plan to destroy this place. And I must say, I’m intrigued of your power."
"My power?" he let out a chuckle.
"I mean, let’s be real here. You’re powerful enough to kill me with a single finger. So why bother wasting your time on me?"
"You’re right... I could kill you easily. But that would be a waste. Your power lets you absorb others, so it’s only a matter of time before you surpass me,"
Neo didn’t react. He already expected her to figure it out.
He took a couple of seconds to contemplate.
"We met for the first time in that town. Back then, I hadn’t even discovered my power yet. But everything you did made it seem like you already knew about me... and where I’d be. Like—" he paused.
"Like I can see the future," she finished for him.
"Can you?" he asked, watching her closely.
This place was full of Awakeners with powers science couldn’t explain, so someone who could see the future didn’t seem that impossible.
"No, I don’t," she said, shaking her head. "But someone in the organization can see glimpses of the future, though it’s not very detailed,"
Neo nodded in understanding. Seeing the future was a powerful ability, but it came with drawbacks.
"So, tell me—what did that person see that made you all decide to support me?"
Suhana didn’t answer right away. Her glowing eyes dimmed slightly.
"Alright. that person told us a person carrying the symbol number 13 would rise from the dead... and that you would have the power to become the strongest."
Neo narrowed his eyes. "That’s pretty specific."
She nodded. "It was. But by the time we received that prophecy, the number of test subjects had already reached the seven thousand marks.
So, from that point on, every time someone was tagged with a number ending in thirteen—whether it was 7,013 or 12,013—we sent someone to watch."
"And I was number 13,000," Neo muttered. "Lucky me."
"Yeah," she said. "You died during your final trial. Just another failed experiment on the list. But protocol said to keep an eye on it anyway. I volunteered."
Neo looked at her carefully. "So, you were watching from the start."
"From the moment you died, yes. "
"Then you watched everything?" Neo asked, his tone quieter now. "Even when they threw me in that dump like trash?"
"Yes, I saw it,"
"So that’s all I was to you?" he asked, voice low. "Just a number in a list?"
"At the time, yes," Suhana answered without hesitation. "You were nothing special. Just another subject to observe."
Neo looked at her, eyes narrowing. "You talk like I’m supposed to thank you for admitting that.
"I’m not asking for thanks," she said. "I’m telling you the truth."
"You didn’t think I was worth saving before I underwent all those experiments?" he asked, his voice laced with bitterness.
"It’s nothing personal. I couldn’t step in. The orders were clear: Observe. Don’t interfere until revival."
Neo clenched his fist tightly. "You have all this power, and yet you all decided to just let this whole sick operation go on. You do know that you’re not better than the one running this place."
Suhana’s eyes darkened slightly "Don’t level us with those scum,"
"You think that just because I have this power that I can change anything? That’s just wishful thinking... The people running this place are far more terrifying than you imagine."
"If you think I’m already a monster, you will piss yourself the moment you met one of the S Rankers. Those beings are so powerful that they could flip a country upside down if they felt like it...."
"Compared to them, me and everyone else in our organization are nothing more than ants. That’s why we had to operate in secret."
Neo felt a chill run down his spine. He knew that there were forces beyond his comprehension in this island but hearing her speak with such gravity made it all seem far more real.
The S Rankers—he couldn’t even begin to imagine what kind of beings they were.
He started at her eyes, and he could tell that she was also holding her anger but not on him, but the same people he hated.
"Did you also lose something important in this place?" he asked.
"Not something," she shook her head. "Someone dear to me... my little sister."
Her confident expression cracked the moment she uttered those words, and he could tell that she was genuinely hurting.
"I’m sorry for asking. You don’t need to tell me what happened if it’s too hard for you,"
Suhana just forced a smile. "Neo, everyone in the organization has lost someone because of the scums running this place, and we need you if we want to end it all."
Neo leaned back in his chair. "So, you plan to help me gain more powers in secret until I can contend with those S-ranks, right?"
"Yes, we can’t let them know about you until you’re strong enough, or they would sweep this island clean," she replied.
"That’s why I tried checking how you would handle this situation. I was glad to see that you’re a man of reason. You don’t move without thought and always consider things carefully."
"So I passed your test?" Neo asked, raising an eyebrow.
"With flying colors," she replied, a small smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "Everyone who read my reports was really happy with your performance. Now, we’re willing to put all our resources into making you stronger."
"And how would you do that?"
She reached into her shoulder bag and pulled out a folder, handing it to him without a word.
Neo took it and began flipping through the pages. Inside were lists of Awakeners, each name followed by a rank and brief descriptions of their abilities.
"There’ll be a competition in one of the towns in three days. It’s not official, so most of the contestants will be Awakeners looking to bet money and vent some of their frustration"
"Wait... don’t tell me you plan to attack the venue and massacre everyone?"
She nodded slowly. "Yes. That’s the fastest way for you to gain more powers."
The silence lingered. Suhana’s gentle appearance didn’t match the ruthlessness in her words.
But then again, anyone who lived on this island had to be crazy just to stomach all the sick things happening here.
"I get your point, but I think you’re overestimating my abilities. Even if you hand me dozens of Awakeners, I can only absorb one power a day."
Suhana’s expression hardened. "I see... so that’s why you waited this long to absorb his power."
"Yes," he nodded. There was no point hiding it, considering the secret organization was already betting everything on him.
Besides, letting them know his limitations would help them come up with a plan that actually suited his situation.
"This changes things," she mused aloud.
"Exactly. That’s why I suggest a new plan—no need to go full commando. Help me kill Awakeners with strong abilities. Like an A-rank, for example."
