Chapter 62: Open Hunt

While Neo continued to chat with the guard, he made sure to keep his tone light and friendly, trying to build a rapport with the man.

The guard, seemingly amused by his humor, began to relax and lean in closer.

"So, what do you need exactly?" the guard asked, a hint of curiosity in his voice.

Neo smiled and launched into a charming tale. "Well, I’m looking for something that will make me look classy, but not too formal. A coat would be great, maybe something in black? And a pants to match. "

"My co-worker is also looking for something similar, but she’s more into...simple fashion. Something with a jacket would be perfect for her."

The guard raised an eyebrow but couldn’t help but chuckle at Neo’s request. "And what about shoes? You want those too?"

Neo nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, that would be great. Rejected shoes are fine, as long as they’re not too damaged. We’re on a budget here."

The guard, who had a good impression of him, didn’t just take the items they needed.

Instead, he led them to a section of the warehouse packed with assorted items.

Clothes, shoes, belts, everything fashion-related. Even sunglasses were stacked in boxes. The place felt more like a night market than a storage area.

Someone who seemed to be running the operation called out the guard for letting them in.

He quickly covered for them, claiming Neo was his relative. A complete lie.

Fortunately, now that they were here, the one in charge decided to let it slide.

He gave a shrug and said, "Make it quick," then turned away, clearly not interested in wasting time on them.

Neo scanned the racks without wasting time.

’Whoa, these are actually legit,’ he muttered to himself, running his fingers over the familiar logos.

He couldn’t believe it - they were all branded with names he recognized from back home. The quality was unmistakable, and he could tell that these weren’t some cheap knockoffs.

But then again, this island was packed with people earning massive salaries.

Neo wouldn’t even be surprised if each one made around 200,000 to 300,000 USD a year—and that was just for low-ranking jobs.

So, it made sense. A place like this wouldn’t bother with knockoffs. Only authentic items were sold here.

As he held the black leather jacket in his hands, Neo estimated that it would fit him surprisingly well, despite the broken zipper.

He didn’t mind that it wouldn’t close properly. He planned on wearing an undershirt underneath anyway.

Neo gave the jacket a few tugs, stretching it out to test its flexibility.

The leather creaked softly as he manipulated it, but it seemed to have enough stretch to accommodate his movements.

More importantly, Neo was relieved to find that it has allowance for when he transformed into his beast form.

’This is good enough,’ Neo nodded to himself, satisfied with his find.

Next, picked out a pair of gray pants and a black shoed.

Meanwhile, Lyra moved more quietly. She chose a gray jacket lined with firm white cotton, slipped a pair of plain pants under her arm, and added black rubber shoes.

She didn’t say much—just nodded when she was done.

Finally, both of them grabbed hats, shades, and even a watch. Simple choices, but just enough to help them blend in.

The guard stood back, arms crossed, a faint smile on his face.

"For both of you... this much," he said, naming a price that didn’t sound like a rip-off.

Neo pulled out a stack of cash without blinking.

The money came from the dead bodies in the previous town. Collecting it had become second nature, like a gamer grabbing loot without ever bothering to check what it was.

Once the payment was done, they didn’t bother trying the clothes on.

No time for that, and no point. If anyone caught a glimpse of the latex suit underneath, it would raise too many questions.

They left quickly, disappearing into the alleys where they found a quiet spot to change into their new gear.

After everything was set, they headed towards the building.

Mercenaries pointed their guns at them the moment they stepped out within range. It was obvious — they were prepared for any threat.

"We came from the Main Sector," he held up his fake ID.

A man in his forties stepped forward, his gear different from the others. Neo quickly assumed he must be the team commander.

The team commander narrowed his eyes, sizing up Neo and his ID.

Another mercenary stepped forward, holding a handheld white scanner — the kind typically seen at a mall, where people tap their credit cards to pay.

He brought it close to the ID, and the device let out a soft beep.

A green light blinked on the screen, confirming its validity.

Next, he scanned Lyra’s ID. The process went just as smoothly.

Each ID had a built-in photo, and the faces on the screen matched them perfectly. There was no room for doubt, no way to fake it.

The mercenary gave a small nod and stepped back.

Meanwhile, the team commander signaled for everyone to stand down.

One by one, the mercenaries slowly lowered their weapons.

"We didn’t receive any word from the Main Sector about two awakeners coming here," the team leader added.

Neo didn’t answer right away. He calmly tucked his ID back into his jacket.

"We’re not exactly required to tell you, "He responded with a rude tone, making sure to sound arrogant and look the part.

The team leader narrowed his eyes in annoyance for a brief second but held his tongue.

He knew better than to mess with two Awakeners from the Main Sector — or any Awakener, for that matter.

It was extremely rare for humans to awaken, making them valuable treasures on this island.

And as mercenaries, they had plenty of experience dealing with Awakeners who either went mad or turned rogue. It always ended in a bloodbath, and the news about that zombie outbreak was still fresh on their minds.

"Ahem!" The team leader cleared his throat, adopting a more deferential tone as he asked, "If I may inquire, what brings you two to our... sector."

Neo raised an eyebrow, enjoying the subtle shift in the leader’s demeanor. He could sense the man’s reluctance to provoke them, so he decided to press his advantage.

’Strike while the iron is hot’

"Enough of your useless questions," Neo spat out.

"We’re not here to make pointless small talk. Take me to the person in charge. I don’t have time for someone like you."

The team leader gritted his teeth and lifted his head, clinging to his pride.

But when both their eyes met, he took an unconscious step back.

"I...I apologize if I’ve wasted your time, sir," he said hastily "I’ll take you to see our... supervisor. He’ll be able to answer any questions you may have."

His sudden apology and willingness to cooperate caught his subordinates off guard.

One moment, their leader was standing firm, and the next, he was practically groveling.

Was this really the strict, tough leader they had always known?

But Neo knew exactly what had happened. He subtly activated his Killing Intent, a skill that allowed him to project an aura of intimidation

It wasn’t quite strong yet, but with a bit more effort and the right acting, like narrowing his eyes in annoyance, he could increase its effectiveness.

"Please come with me,"

They entered the building, the team leader walking ahead of them as they made their way to the second floor.

Finally, they arrived at a door marked "Supervisor" in bold silver letters.

The team leader hesitated for a moment before knocking twice.

KNOCK!

KNOCK!

"Come in," a man’s voice echoed from the other side.

The team leader then pushed the door open.

Neo stepped into the room first and was met with a wide layout. To the side stood a desk positioned near a large window, offering a clear view of the docks below.

There was even items that didn’t quite fit the office style, like a large 100-inch TV mounted on the wall, a sofa bed, a refrigerator, a small dining table, and more.

It resembled an apartment more than an office.

Behind the desk sat a man with a straight posture, his eyes fixed on Neo.

He looked to be around thirty-five, fit and composed. Still, the streaks of gray in his hair hinted at stress or experience beyond his years.

"Please, sit down," he gestured, then turned to the team leader. "Leave and lock the door behind you on your way out."

The team leader obeyed the order without question.

Neo acted casually, sitting down in the chair with a relaxed air about him. He leaned back in his seat, his eyes fixed on the so-called supervisor.

Lyra, on the other hand, stayed standing as per his instructed.

She was faster than him, making her better suited to handle any surprise attack.

Sitting close to someone with unknown powers wasn’t exactly comfortable, so he kept a plan ready in case things went south.

Just as it seemed like the conversation was about to begin, a translucent window suddenly popped up.

[Mission: Kill the D - Rank Awakener]

[Reward: 2x Silver Box]

’Calm down...’ Neo’s expression remained stoic and composed.

He wondered why the system was so quiet, so seeing it issue a mission again was a welcome surprised.

In addition, the reward was practically a bonus, considering he already planned to kill his target so he could gain more abilities.
