Chapter 29: Unrealistic Term

Tears welled up in the man’s swollen eyes as he trembled, his vision a mess of blood and sweat

In reality, he couldn’t see anything—not the so-called window, not even Neo’s face.

If he could, after all that beating, he might as well apply for a position as a boxer, rather than working in this shady, creepy place.

Darkness slowly moved at the edges of his sight, but Neo didn’t care.

His grip on the jaw tightened with each passing second, fingers digging into bruised flesh like a predator toying with its prey.

But in this case, his hunger wasn’t from his stomach; it was the need to satisfy the thirst of his already broken mind.

A mind that could have achieved so much, if not for these sick bastards destroying everything.

"Come on, read it out loud," he ordered impatiently.

"I-I can’t..." the man whimpered.

"What do you mean you can’t?" Neo said with a mocking grin, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Can’t read, or can’t, see?"

"I... I can’t see it," the man stammered, swallowing hard. He feared another beating would follow.

"So, you lied to me?" Neo’s voice dropped low; his tone cold. "I told you, didn’t I? I hate liars."

The man frantically shook his head. His muscles barely responded, his body too weak from the repeated beating.

"N-no, I swear it’s not my intention!!!"he gasped out, his voice breaking.

"Oh? So what? Now you have amnesia and can’t remember what you told me earlier?"

The grip on the man’s jaw twisted sharply, forcing his head at an unnatural angle.

"Please, don’t hurt me anymore. I really can’t see anything!," he pleaded, his voice trembling with desperation.

Neo let out a scoff. "If you’re blind, then what use do you have for those eyes?"

His free hand drifted toward the bloodstained scissors, and he dragged it across the man’s bruised cheek.

"Should I fix your little eye problem? Don’t worry, I won’t charge you a thing,"

SNIP!

The man’s entire body tensed, bracing for the worst. But when the pain never came, confusion flickered through his swollen face.

Slowly, he forced himself to open his eyes.

Multiple strands of his hair rested on his lap, severed cleanly by the blades.

Neo chuckled lowly. "Relax. That was just a test run."

His grip tightened again, pressing so hard that the man’s jawbone audibly creaked.

"But the next one won’t be," he murmured, his voice low and taunting. "If you keep wasting my time."

A muffled sob escaped as the man thrashed weakly against the restraints, pure terror flooding his veins.

"I-I swear, I won’t! Please... ask me anything! I’ll answer! I won’t lie!"

"You say that now... but what if I don’t like your answers?"

The man’s breathing turned shallow, his lips trembling. "I’ll tell you everything I know..."

"Okay. Last chance,"

"What exactly are those drugs for? And why the hell are they experimenting on people?"

This time, the man wasted no time. His words spilled out like a dam at full throttle.

"They only use those drugs when someone fails to awaken...But the success rate is really low, so a lot of people end up dying and are sent here to be disposed of."

Neo’s eyes darkened. "Awaken..."

It was that term again. The nurses and doctors spoke about, but he still didn’t really understand what it meant.

If he was being honest, the closest he could think of were those terms from novels and comics that were becoming pretty popular lately, even getting anime adaptations.

Though, he refused to believe that such outrageous concept could actually be real.

"What exactly is this ’awaken’ term? And why do they want people to go through all this hell for it?"

There was a moment of silence as the man took his time to gather his thoughts before answering.

"I don’t know the exact details, but I heard rumors," the man replied, his voice shaking.

"Some humans have a particular dormant DNA, and they want to trigger it to gain superpowers,"

Neo raised an eyebrow. "And you actually believe that bullshit?"

"It’s true. I met a superhuman before. He could turn his body into stone"

The man didn’t sound like he was lying, which only made Neo more confused.

He would’ve believed it if it was something like gaining the strength to lift 1,000 kg, but turning into stone? That didn’t make sense.

Sure, there were some diseases that could cause things like this—skin hardening, abnormal growths, things like that—but they were defects, not powers.

Neo frowned, his mind racing through the possibilities. Something didn’t add up.

Then it hit him.

’Maybe they found a way to unlock and control brain hormones?’

’I saw a video once... they said that when a human can control over 12% of their brain, they’d gain extraordinary powers.’

Neo’s frown deepened. The idea of manipulating brain chemistry to unlock hidden potential wasn’t exactly new.

But as someone who studied psychology, he knew that it wasn’t the case at all.

In fact, brain scans showed activity in nearly every part of the brain at different times, even when a person was at rest.

But what if awakening really was possible?

What if there was some hidden potential in the human genome that could be triggered, unlocking powers beyond imagination?

Neo paused, the thought lingering in his mind like an itch he couldn’t scratch.

Then his attention was caught by the translucent window.

He tried touching it, but his hand just passed through.

’It’s really hard to believe, but...’ he trailed off.

’This could explain my sudden increased of power... and this annoying screen...’

Authors Note:

The following Chapters might be too graphic and detailed, but that’s because I want to convey the changes Neo went through after his mind was broken by the experiments.

Even his humor became a defense mechanism to hide his mental trauma.

Once it’s established, the story will be more direct, exploring his system, the island, and the secret behind the Awakening.

The island has far worse horrors waiting beneath the surface, and you’re in for a wild ride so be prepared.
