Chapter 89: Dressing Tent Drama (2)
Her lips curved in a smirk as she concluded her words and a hush descended in the tent, while waiting for the person who would step into the trap she just laid.
Jodi took the bait.
And for a moment there, Avery felt guilt starting to creep into her chest. But she expelled it as soon as it began to form, reminding herself that she had no liberty to allow sentimental feelings in her revenge plan.
Jodi might be the first person she met since the incident who was closest to a friend for her, but then...was that term even useful? Even family could betray, fiancès wouldn’t bat an eye when plotting to kill you and cheating; how was she expected to trust mere friends then?
Avery knew she was wounded and that her view of the world was probably distorted by now, but she preferred this feeling of security where no one knew her mind and next plan, to one of uncertainty where there were a lot of people who could stab her in the back. She wouldn’t survive it a second round and might as well go on a killing spree.
"I feel you, Ava. Today’s the first day you’re leaving home in two weeks all because of the damned Avery and now you’re having it hard at work too because of her," Jodi stated.
Someone else took it from her, "Omg, that’s true. But I don’t think that’s the reason Ms McCallum seems not to like you. In fact, I don’t think there’s any reason for her to dislike you."
As they could not see her face behind the racks, Avery smiled but still made her voice sound like she was sad.
"I love that you all think this way," she said, "But I’m really not asking for anyone to like me. I just don’t want them to hate me either, especially for something I have never been involved in."
Murmurs increased from the other side and from the broken sentences Avery could pick up, she knew her plan had worked. Most of the actresses and crew members now had uncertain feelings for Valentina, seeing her as a proud and snobbish human, as she really was.
Though she hadn’t wished to descend this low with Valentina, the fact that she tried to insinuate Avery was a thief or that she was wearing a fake dress made her angry. Anyone would be angry when a thief called someone else a thief.
Apart from that, those words felt like an insult to Archie and the real Ava Donovan, who was the actual owner of the clothes she was wearing. Someone of their status would never buy a fake clothing talk less of wearing it, jeez!
Basking in the supportive whisper-yells that people from the other side of the rack—with Jodi leading them—were throwing at her, she slipped into the bikini that was her costume for today.
For the whole of today; as Leroy had planned for them to take only the beach scenes so as to give them time to socialize and adjust to the schedule which, after today, would be very tight. The aim was to conclude shooting in a month and to achieve that, they had to work extra hard and well into the night.
There was no reply from Valentina’s side even after minutes had passed and Avery was done dressing. Sitting in front of the make-up artist, she had her hands balled into tight fists to mask the impatience she was feeling. She needed Valentina to reply to the drama that occured minutes ago but it wasn’t forthcoming. Seems like her used-to-be foolish cousin had gained a little wisdom.
’If that’s the case,’ Avery thought, ’Then things aren’t looking good. I’d have to restrategize.’
"Oh my god! You are totally transformed into Sloane!" Jodi’s face popped in front of her as soon as the make-up artist concluded her task and left.
"You too." Avery tilted her head slightly, slowly loosening her fists to relax while basking in Jodi’s cheerful and infectious energy. "I can’t even see Jodi in front of me. I can only see Thea," she said, a hint of laughter underlying her tone.
She was serious though. Jodi’s sexy blonde image had been totally transformed into an innocent side character’s signature look; befitting her role in the movie. The skimpy white bikini only served to accentuate the desired character image.
"Look at that," she replied, shaking her head slightly as if she couldn’t believe Avery, "You are only saying that because you haven’t seen yourself. Don’t get angry baby, when Thea strangles Sloane on camera."
Avery scoffed, "Do I believe that? No. Because from what I read in the script, the probability of anyone strangling a rival would be higher for Sloane more than it does, for Thea."
"You will never lose, will you?" Jodi rolled her eyes. She stepped away from Avery, availing her the chance to see her own reflection in the mirror.
And immediately, she believed what Jodi said about her already transformed into a villain. She couldn’t even recognize herself in the mirror with the dark, glossy line that framed her eyes with precision, making them sparkle like diamonds.
Her keen eyes caught the bold and seductive eyeliner with the subtle flick at the corner that hinted at a wild side, and an equally wild smile tugged at the corner of her lips. In short, the image she had attained was both sophisticated and sultry, inviting all eyes to linger...but not for long. After all, male lead’s fling or not, she was still just a side character who was meant to be less attractive than the female lead.
It was the reason the make up on her face was heavy so her real looks could be both enhanced and masked in a way, while giving space for Valentina to shine.
And that fact was established when Valentina stepped out of her tent, her looks and attire screaming two words.
Lead Actress.
