Chapter 68: Daughters.

Archie raised his brow.

"What did I just watch, DeLoach?"

"And why are you here, Donovan?" Ethan returned.

A fake frown started to form on the former’s face, his lips thinning in displeasure,"Ouch, Ethan. Don’t be such a rude host. I asked first and that means you should answer first."

"Really? I didn’t know 22 years apart made you more childish than mature," Ethan taunted, his brows corked as he walked across the room to settle in one of the couches, not bothering to invite his guest to do the same. "My house, my rules, Arch. You won’t force me to do anything against my will."

"Won’t," Archie smirked. "I love that you didn’t say ’can’t’. Very wise of you."

He looked down at the phone to see Neil’s message that he had successfully completed the errand he was sent on, before slipping his phone into his pocket.

He looked up at Ethan. "Since my host didn’t bother to invite me to sit, I guess I can take the initiative on my own...or not?"

"Sit," Ethan half ordered and half invited nicely.

"Saying this just because I have to; Thanks," Archie stated. He assumed a position on the couch directly opposite Ethan, leaning back on the seat to make himself comfortable.

"You asked why I came?" he began, his voice bare of any hint of humor as he continued, "To catch up. I missed you."

Ethan almost scoffed. "You could feed that crap to your brothers back at home, Arch. Will you continue to waste my time?"

"You’re a fucking bore, Dude. I’d wonder what made your wife like you so much."

"Maybe it’s the exact same reason your own wife likes you even with the monstrous attitudes you have accumulated over the years," Ethan retorted.

Archie was a silent for a while after that, the atmosphere dropping to a low degree when he gritted his teeth,"She doesn’t like me, Ethan. Quite the opposite actually, Ava hates me."

"Heard she’s been living with you for a while now. And you say she hates you?" Unaffected by the sudden change in atmosphere, Ethan asked.

"She does," Archie confirmed. "But she also needs me, and that’s the only reason she hasn’t murdered me in my sleep yet, considering how many opportunities she has had to do that," He ran one hand through his silky hair, a subtle attempt to show his impatience."I don’t care if I’m being used. The end result will be me getting much more out of this deal than anyone could ever know, especially her."

"If you say so," Ethan shrugged. "I know you well enough to be sure you’ll never partake in a losing deal. Glad that hasn’t changed."

"Speaking about deals. I need your help, Ethan."

"With?"

"My wife. For the next few months, you will find some idiots digging their noses around to find out if she really did live in this country for years. You will help me make sure their findings are positive."

"I will?" Ethan arched his brow, his dark eyes devoid of any form of curiosity. "Why should I?"

"Because—"

The shrill sound of a toddlers cry interrupted Archie and broke the silence in the quiet villa, bouncing off the walls of the whole building and settling in the living room. Before he could react or ask what that was, he saw Ethan spring to his feet.

"What’s that? Where are you going?" he asked, joining his cousin on his feet.

"Up..." Ethan trailed off, his lips curving into a mischievous smirk. "Would you like to come with me? We could continue our discussion while I check what she wants."

"She?" Archie muttered incredulously but he hadn’t yet gotten the time to ask what Ethan meant, when the latter took large strides to cross the hallway and start his ascent up the stairs. "Who is ’she’?"

Few minutes later, the answer to his question was presented to him when he found himself standing in the middle of a room awashed in the color pink. Not only the color of the walls but also the toys that littered the floor, dolls and teddy bears piled up in the corner, and luxury cots pushed up against the corner with Ethan standing over one of them.

The men dark clothes contrasted sharply with the bright colors that dominated the room, and Archie found that uncomfortable.

"Where is this place?"

Ethan didn’t reply, stepping aside for him to see the answer himself. A little girl...no, a baby girl, sitting up in bed and staring blankly at him.

"What’s that?" he asked, even though the answer already dawned on him.

"My daughter," Ethan replied nonetheless.

"Your—You have a daughter?!" They were fake cousins who hadn’t kept in touch with each other for years but still, he couldn’t believe he had no idea the man before him had a daughter already. And a daughter this big? Well, not that big but she looked around...a year old? "How old is she?"

"13 months old. And to answer your earlier question, I don’t have a daughter, I have two. Here’s Sapphire and here," He stepped aside to reveal another baby peeking out of the second cot, a googly smile on her face, "Her name’s Sophia."

Archie’s face slowly morphed into a frown as his eyes alternated between the two girls who seemed to be sizing him up too, before traveling to their father’s face.

"What stunt are you trying to pull by inviting me here, to your daughters’ room?" he questioned.

"Hmmm, not a stunt. It’s just an offer," Ethan stated.

Archie echoed, "Offer?"

"Deal, to be exact." Ethan corrected, "I will help with your request from the other time if you help me feed Sophie."

"Feed?! I can’t even touch that baby, Ethan, not to talk of holding her in my hand and feeding her. She’ll..." he searched for the right words to convey his feeling and finally settled on, "Break."

"She wouldn’t," Ethan disagreed immediately.

"She will."
