Chapter 59: Hot News.
Everything was going perfectly well, much to Valentina’s delight, until a business card popped in her line of sight and she looked up to meet the eyes of a very familiar gossip reporter, one who had never regarded her in good light.
"Elena Black, Miss Valentina." The reporter introduced herself with the most cheerful smile as if she didn’t notice Valentina was hesitant to collect her card, "Trust you are having a good night."
"I am—" Valentina cut herself off, blinking intermittently as she corrected herself, "I am not. But I’m still one of the hosts of the party so I have to entertain people and pretend I am enjoying myself."
"I didn’t ask you that, Young Miss. Don’t you think you are saying too much to a gossip reporter even if I was your late cousin’s best friend? After all, I have the power to twist your words in the most scandalous ways possible."
"I don’t—"
"Ah!" the reporter, Elena interjected, clamping her hand over her mouth in a fake gasp, "I got ahead of myself now and called you ’young miss’. You used to want me calling you that all the time when Emma was alive but I refused since it was inappropriate. Now that she’s dead and I’m calling you that, you can’t tell me it makes you happy... right?"
"Of course, it doesn’t—" Valentina shook her head hurriedly. Her mother had only prepared her for the speech, not for sudden meetings with gossip reporters. Who the hell even let Elena Black in here?!
"Does it make you sad then? That you are being addressed with a title that isn’t supposed to be yours?"
Heaving a deep sigh, Valentina knew she already exhausted her patience for the night and let her fake smile slip for the first time that night.
"Cut the crap, Elena. What do you want from me?!" she snapped.
"Wow, our Young Miss is willing to give me a gift. If so, then I need your presence as a guest on my show," Elena demanded, her firm tone showing she wouldn’t back down until she got what she wanted.
"A guest on your gossip show?!" Her tone was laced in disbelief, "Why would I?"
"The real question should be, why wouldn’t you? Apart from your name suddenly climbing the charts and turning into a hot topic since Emma died, don’t you think you should also repay the debt you owe me by appearing on my show? After all, you made me lose my first job where I had a good standing, didn’t you?"
"I didn’t," Valentina disagreed, "I didn’t ask grandfather to order that your magazine be banned. It’s not my fault you wrote about Emma and Avery and excluded me, making him angry."
Elena chuckled mirthlessly, "Of course, it isn’t your fault. That’s the reason I’m not threatening you with exposing the jealousy you used to harbor for your cousin sister while she was alive." Casting a quick glance around the room to make sure they were not being watched, she shoved the business card into Valentina’s palm and said, "I will be waiting for your call. Think about it, Valentina, we can still work together and resolve our animosity only if you use your brain and know what’s good for you."
Without so much as a small pause for Valentina to add her input, Elena added, "Happy birthday, Tina. Must be a nice feeling for you and your family; to be hosts of the first birthday ball in the McCAllum mansion."
She turned around and headed towards the exit of the hall, her eyes heating up as she walked out the the large doors. Hearing her phone beep, she took it out to see the message notification displayed on the screen, and a frown formed on her face.
"This woman sure looks like Avery," she muttered, her hands balling into tight fists as she took in every single detail on the image displayed on her phone’s screen. "Hot news for a dull night."

DOVE’S LUXURY BUILDING.
PENTHOUSE.
With the events of the past month that had brought her here, Avery had thought she would never again get the chance to know what it felt to have excitement pumping through her veins and happiness slithering around her heart reins. But as she sat on the plush rug in the living room, chattering away to Lake and Thorne, she could barely control the plethora of feelings that seemed to want to burst through her chest.
"Tina was so scared. I could see it in her eyes and it made me so satisfied I had to stand before her for a few more minutes to see that shock completely unfold on her face," she said. "Guess what? She couldn’t even say a word!"
The moment she and Jodi successfully escaped from the agency after exchanging greetings with the rest of the team. They had discussed during the ride back home—where the driver had dropped Jodi off first—on why Valentina McCAllum had ignored them when they went to greet her. Avery had suggested it was pride, and Jodi readily agreed as she was unable to guess any other reason why.
After that, their ride had been quiet which each of them dwelling in their own thoughts. Avery, itching to get home as early as possible so she could be able to tell someone who knew her real identity how successful today had been, since she could not let Jodi know. But disappointment had hit her when she got home and found Archie in his study, bent over a bunch of proposals he had been so absorbed in scanning through that he hadn’t noticed when she pushed open the door and closed it back.
Now, she had no one to talk to but the dogs who seemed like pretty good listeners even if she still kept a good distance from them. The silence in the room was broken by the shrill sound of her phone ringing, and she leaned over to pick it from where it was lying on the table.
