Chapter 39: Cookies From His Best friend.

Chapter 39: Cookies From His Best friend.

Feeling his firm lips against hers, Avery was rendered completely handicapped, unable to push him off her or at the very least, react. He parted her lips with his, slipping his wet tongue into her warm mouth and that was the moment she lost it...or rather, that was the moment she regained her senses.

"Arch..." she moaned into his mouth, parting her lips further to deepen their kiss. Her eyes were closed, but his image etched in her mind made it look like she was staring straight at him.

Until he pulled away from her, ending the kiss.

"Did Brian ever kiss you like that?" he asked.

Avery slowly shook her head. If the small peck on the lips she had had with Brian over the years could be called a kiss, then how was she to explain this one with Archie?

"Wait..." she said, a puzzled expression taking over her face. "Why did you kiss me?"

"We are done mourning. What were you expecting?" Archie deadpanned.

"But—"

"Ava, that was to convince you I am not gay. But even I know it won’t be enough so do not worry, I will continue to convince you with every opportunity I get from now on. Just be who you are," he said.

"Who am I? Ava Donovan or Avery McCAllum?"

"Avery McCAllum is dead. And who are you, you asked? You are mine. I own you and since we are done mourning, what’s left for me to do than to claim you?"

Short of words to reply him with, Avery’s face reddened in embarrassment. He was right. All he had to do now was claim her and she was sort of anticipating it.

"I will leave you alone to eat now." Archie stepped away from between her legs, not bothering to help her down to from the countertop. He began to retreat to the entrance of the kitchen but stopped halfway through, "By the way, keep your hands and mouth off those cookies. They were given to me by my best friend for ME to eat."

"I won’t touch it," Avery promised.

"Good girl," he flashed her a quick smile and walked out of the kitchen.

Avery jumped down after he left and noticed the glasses still lying on the countertop. She carefully picked it up, her mind running a mile per second. With the excuse that she wanted to give him this, she could go to his room... right?

Recognizing the person sitting by the patient’s bed tonight, Archibald’s eyes narrowed in displeasure which gradually dissipated when he saw her wet eyes.

"You signed up for taking care of the patient after working hours?" he asked. As far as he knew, Stephanie Brookes was supposed to be a sheltered 24 year old who still lived with her parents. Apart from Avery, she was not allowed to stay over at anyone else’s, and that was only because her parents knew Avery and everything about her, up until a month ago of course.

"I needed the extra income, Sir," was the reply.

"I doubt that," he disagreed. "Stephanie, do you know the reason I didn’t throw you out the first day I saw you here?"

Stephanie nodded, her voice oddly low when she spoke, "I do, Sir. You allowed me work here because of Avery."

"Wrong," Archie deadpanned, to see her jerk her head up to meet his gaze. He could see the fear starting to creep in her black eyes as she rose slowly from her seat. "I would be stupid to trust anyone that used to be close to Ava at this point, not when she was betrayed by people much closer. But I only let you be cause of your relationship with Arthur."

"I didn’t have—" Stephanie started to argue against his subtle accusation when he interjected,

"You loved him, didn’t you? But you considered yourself unworthy to be loved by him. That’s the difference between us."

"Uh?" Stephanie’s eyes widened in shock. Was she having a normal conversation with Archibald Donovan right now? And he was telling her he knew she used to love Arthur, no, she still loved him. His paying so much attention to her best friend in the past must have been extended to her later on, as she could not fathom how he could have noticed her feelings for Arthur. And that... What the hell was going on? She cleared her throat, not wanting him to think she was ignoring him. "What is the difference between us?"

"You need training, that’s the simple answer."

"Training on...?" Stephanie blinked.

"You thought you were unworthy of receiving love from someone as wealthy as Arthur McCAllum, so you decided to love him from a distance. But for me, even though I knew I was not supposed to covet someone as pure as that, I took what I wanted anyway. Loving from a distance, that’s not for people like me." Arthur stated, his eyes holding a tinge of pity for the girl.

"Weren’t you worried?" Stephanie asked. Having shed a little bit of her nervousness under his pitiful gaze, she added, "Were you not worried that she would hate you when she discovers everything you have done to own her. I mean, I have considered following your footsteps once but..."

"But you never did. You thought you should be content with the little attention you were getting instead of jeopardizing your chance by being too greedy."

"That... that’s it. Maybe if I had your courage, I would have confessed before all these happened but now, I can only watch..."

"Good that you know you can only watch and are not allowed to do anything else. It was great speaking to you, now excuse us."

"Yes, Sir," Stephanie obliged, and made her way out of the room.

Unlike the previous time, Archie didn’t take his seat but instead, simply leaned on the backrest of the chair as his eyes roved over the face of the person in bed.

"Did you hear that, Arthur? Your sister’s friend loved you."
