Avery's Game Of Revenge -
Chapter 32: Mrs Donovan.
Chapter 32: Mrs Donovan.
"Resuming school, university I mean. And I need your help with something else too," she replied.
As she had angered Archie the previous night, Avery was totally expecting direct refusal to her request for help. So when the man walked into the room and shut the door without giving her an answer, she was not surprised. It was when the door opened again almost immediately that she was really shocked.
"What?" she asked, blinking rapidly to hide the surprise in her eyes. "Do you want to lay a condition in return for your help again?"
Narrowing his eyes at her, Archie replied, "You and I already laid more than enough conditions for the whole arrangement. That should be the limit."
"Then why..." Avery trailed off, her words ceasing in her throat when a phone intruded in her line of sight. "What is this?"
"You from a remote island or something? This is a phone. Neil, Donald, Ian, Orion and Jodi; their contacts are saved in it. You can ask the appropriate person for whatever help you need," Archie replied. He let it go when she raised her hand to accept the device, her eyes glistening in happiness.
"How about yours and Nancy’s contact number?" she asked.
"Nancy is right downstairs if you need her number. As for me, you have to work for it."
"I have to work just to get your number? What would I need that for when I have the others to ask for help?"
"Well, let’s see about that, shall we? Anyways, go on and call whoever you need. I won’t appreciate any disturbance for the rest of the day."
With that, he went back in and slammed the door shut in her face. This time—even though Avery stood there for a minute more—the door wasn’t reopened.
That was...strange.
She shrugged, suppressing the discomfort that started to rouse in her chest.
’There’s a lot to do, Avery. Let’s get to work,’ she encouraged herself inwardly.
★★★
’’Breathe in...breathe out...In...out...You can do this, Avery. Let’s go!’’
Tucking a loose tendril of her hair behind her ear, Avery summoned courage and stepped out of the car. Her grip tightened on the phone and she turned to face the driver who was still holding the door open.
’’You don’t have to pick me up later. I will find Jodi and we will return together,’’ she stated.
’’But Miss Ava, the boss instructed me to wait behind and pick you up. If you want me to leave, then I will have to call him and ask first.’’
Avery rolled her eyes and gave the driver the signal to go ahead.
’’Alright. Call him, but know that your waiting here doesn’t guarantee that I will come back here when I’m done with lectures,’’ she said. And without waiting for a reply, walked away from him. Fixing her gaze on a large tree which stood at a distance from where the car was parked, she didn’t stop walking until she was standing beneath it. She let her eyes wander around the area, a small smile curling on her lips when she saw that many students had yet to arrive. That had been her aim when she woke up very early that morning to prepare, even before Nancy arrived.
She took out her phone and dialed Jodi’s number only to hear the sound of a phone ringing behind her.
’’Beautiful morning to you, Ava! How are you?’’
’’Doing great,’’ Avery replied with a brighter smile, feeling Jodi link her arm with hers. It was hard to resist such infectious, happy energy that the latter brought with her. ’’You?’’
’’Same,’’ Jodi responded. ’’You dyed your hair to brown or...?"
"This was in fact, its original color. Does it look—"
Jodi laughed, "Great? It looks perfect. Why did you come here so early? I checked the Theatre/drama department first year timetable and saw that classes won’t be starting for the next two hours.’’
As she spoke, Jodi pulled Avery from underneath the tree’s shelter, leading her down the stone pathway like they had a destination in mind. Despite how nervous she was feeling, the latter let herself free and allowed herself to be pulled along. It was part of her scheme after all; to be recognized as a friend to one of the most popular personalities on campus, Jodi.
’’Ava, are you even listening to me?’’
’’I am. Was just distracted a bit by the scenery over there,’’ Avery lied, pointing at a lion fountain that stood regally in the middle of the campus, water gushing out of its large mouth.
’’That?! Don’t get distracted by it. It will become an eyesore sooner or later. I was asking why you came here so early.’’
’’I just wanted to meet you earlier so you could give me a tour of the grounds. When are your classes starting?’’
’’In 30 minutes,’’ Jodi replied, and added after a slight pause, ’’I also have an audition after classes so I might not be able to accompany you.’’
’Good,’ Avery’s heart leaped in delight. She would need to be separated from Jodi to commence her next line of action. She spoke out loud, "About the audition, can I accompany you? Who knows if I might land an extra role?"
Jodi scoffed in disbelief, unable to believe what she was hearing, "The role of an extra? Don’t joke with me, girl, you only need a single word from your husband to land all the lead roles available till the end of this year."
"There’s no way I would ask Archie for that. You are also not asking Neil for help, are you?"
Jodi avoided Avery’s eyes before replying, "Of course not! I and Neil are in a totally different situation compared to you and Mr Donovan." The way her words came out in a rush was all the latter needed to know there was more to Jodi’s words than she was letting on.
However, she was not ready to concern herself with someone else’s problem so she changed the topic, "Anyways, I will be your escort to the audition after lectures so don’t you dare go without me!"
Jodi nodded instantly.
"Alright, Mrs Donovan," she teased, bursting out in laughter when she saw the dumbstruck expression that instantly dominated Avery’s face immediately. "I have to take my leave then, Mrs Donovan. Good luck on your first day!"
Still yet to regain her composure, Avery watched Jodi break into a sprint as she continued down the pathway.
"Mrs Donovan...that sounds weird," she murmured, almost jumping out of her skin in fear when a voice echoed behind her, "What sounds weird?"
