Chapter 209: Don’t Read Yet

"Esther?" Mignon called, recognizing her daughter’s figure instantly. "What are doing out here watching TV when you are supposed to be sleeping?"

She spoke in a stern voice as she walked to the living room.

"I just wanted to see mummy’s face for a while before sleeping," came the soft and pity evoking reply from Esther.

Mignon blinked. She saw Esther to her room a few hours ago; had the girl missed her in such a short span of time?

"But Esther, you could have just asked me to sleep with you instead of watching TV," she said, her tone softening. She made to pull the little girl into her embrace but Esther backed away.

"Don’t worry, Mummy. I’m not a little girl who can’t sleep alone," she muttered. "I just missed mummy a lot and wanted to see if she would be on TV but she wasn’t."

Mignon was confused. To the best of her knowledge, she hadn’t been on TV for the past four years. Why then did Esther think it was easier to see her on TV than— It dawned on her all of a sudden, whom her daughter had missed.

"Esther, were you talking about Shikera just now?" she asked, to receive a small nod in reply. It was obvious that the girl was disappointed at not seeing Shikera on TV.

A sad smile pulled at the corners of Mignon’s lips and gradually widened to a bright one.

"Alright! Why don’t you get some sleep and as soon as you wake up tomorrow, I’ll take you to meet her."

Esther’s eyes sparkled with excitement which soon disappeared as soon as it appeared.

"Can I go? Everyone says they want to spend time alone together," she asked.

Taken aback by the subtle maturity in her ’little girl’s’ voice, Mignon let out a small laugh.

"What do you mean can you go? You are their daughter, aren’t you?"

"I am your daughter too."

This time around, Mignon’s laughter turned full fledge.

"Yes, you are. Aren’t you lucky? You have two mothers and two fathers."

Esther retorted with her brows slightly pulled up, "You make mistakes too, Mummy. I have two mummies and one daddy."

Mignon’s laughter ceased, the smile disappearing from her face in that instant.

"That’s alright, Esther. Let’s get some sleep," she said.

Brushing the matter off in that manner, she led Esther away from the living room without bothering to switch off the TV.

Minutes had passed after the mother daughter duo left before Cole stepped into the living room from where he had been standing in the doorway. Taking his seat on one of the chairs, he stared at the TV’s screen and kept watching.

It didn’t matter what show was being aired, he was seeing what he wanted to see.

Just one woman... Singing on that screen.

"So Kera, I want you to keep this away from Leah. This is a surprise I’m planning for her so don’t you dare bust it!"

"Mmhhh?" Shikera murmured drowsily. To her sleepy self, she was simply hearing a familiar voice in her dream.

The voice continued, "So listen...Don’t shout if she’s by any chance near you. I came to the city."

Shikera sat up with a start, pressing the phone against her ear. Slowly, it dawned on her whom the owner of the voice was and that she was not dreaming.

"Alan, you came to the city?"

"I did. Lower your voice," Alan replied.

"Then where are you now?" Shikera asked. As she talked, she slowly climbed out of bed and walked out of the room. Her gaze flickered with unexplainable emotions when she saw Ethan’s door but she soon composed herself and continued on her way to the first floor.

"I sent an hotel address and I will be staying there for a while."

Shikera sighed, rolling her eyes.

"Why would you stay in an hotel when you can stay somewhere more comfortable?" she questioned, feigning displeasure.

"Because I want to," Alan replied with a chuckle. He continued, changing the topic before Shikera would insist on finding him somewhere else to stay, "How’s the baby though? And you too, are you alright?"

"Of course, I’m alright and the baby is—"

"He knows too?" Ethan’s voice came from behind her, walking past her to the door.

Shikera was confused.

"What are you talking about...?" she trailed off, seeing Mignon and Esther standing behind the door he opened, a smile on her faces.

Hurriedly, she spoke into the phone, "Leah’s here, Alan. If you don’t want her knowing you are here, then I’ll have to end the call now."

She didn’t receive a reply in words, instead in form of Alan disconnecting the call from his side.

She dropped the phone on the couch and walked forward to meet Mignon and Esther halfway.

"Hey Kera. How are you doing? And the baby too?" Mignon enquired, falling casually on the sofa.

On the other hand, Shikera busied herself with ruffling Esther’s hair and asking how she was. When she was done, she finally replied Mignon, "I am fine and the baby’s fine too, as you can see."

"Then why does Ethan look like that’s not the case?"

At the question, Shikera turned to see him walking back up the stairs, completely ignoring her.

"Are you guys alright?" Mignon asked again, to which Shikera gave a small smile in reply.

"We are," she said. "If anything, he’s the only one who has the right to be angry. I caused it all."

Seeing the questioning gaze in Mignon’s eyes, she hurriedly stopped her from answering any other questions by signaling that Esther was still in the living room.

"Esther, will you go up and get daddy down for breakfast? I can’t do much so I guess we’ll just have pancakes and tea," she said.

"You sure did learn a lot from Grandma Cooper," Mignon chimed in.

"Yeah, I did. The only thing I’m regretting right now is I can’t taste what I cook," Shikera replied. She added within herself, "Or if I will ever be able to know how it tastes."

She stood up and walked into the kitchen, followed closely by Mignon.

"Why is that? Do you still vomit everything you eat? Thought that stopped."

"Me too," Shikera gave a mirthless chuckle. "But it gets worse actually. I could be able to eat something today and tomorrow, I’d be unable to stomach it. Don’t worry about me though. It’s totally expected and I will be seeing my doctor more frequently."

Mignon listened to Shikera with rapt attention and nodded when the former was done.

"As long as you’re alright. Anyways, I bet Ethan won’t sit still if you aren’t okay."

"Yes, he won’t," Shikera smiled.

She set about taking out the ingredients for baking a pancake, alongside Mignon, the two absorbed in their different thoughts.

Just then, Esther sauntered into the kitchen and went to take her seat on one of the chairs.

"Where’s daddy?" Mignon asked from where she was searching through the cabinets for the jar of salt.

"He said he’s not coming down for breakfast as long as—"

Shikera hurriedly cut her off, fearing that Ethan had even mentioned that to a kid, "It’s alright, Esther. Daddy is just joking so don’t mind what he says, alright?"

"Okay," Esther nodded. She tilted her head in a confused manner but not finding the answers to her questions, she discarded it to the back of her mind.

Shikera, however, washed her hands and turned to Mignon.

"I’ll just talk to Ethan and be back in a minute," she said in a light tone, not wanting the latter to suspect anything.

"Take all the time you want," Mignon replied, a mischievous smile on her face. "I can do this alone. I and Esther will have breakfast and be on our way."

"Esther will be—" Shikera cut herself off, her gaze alternating from Esther’s face to Mignon’s. Wouldn’t it be inconsiderate of her to ask the girl to stay when she had to me with her biological mother who had missed her for more than 4 years.

Being able to guess what Shikera had almost said, Mignon chuckled, "Well, won’t you mummy and daughter stop rubbing it in my face that I’m not needed? Shikera, Mum wants Esther to stay just one more week and after that, she can come back to you."

"Really?!" Shikera was gushing in excitement, unable to help herself.

"Yes, now go get your husband!"

Without needing to be told twice, Shikera walked out of the kitchen, an excited gait in her footsteps.

She got to Ethan’s door and raised her hand to knock on the door, when a wave of nausea hit her.

She automatically brought her hand down to her side, and turned, pushing open the door to her room instead. Her hand clamped over her mouth, she rushed straight to the toilet with the door slamming shut behind her.

When she came back out a few minutes later, her eyes were duller than earlier and a frown permanently sat on her eyebrows.

"Can you do this, Kera?" she muttered.
