Avery's Game Of Revenge
Chapter 195: The Best Revenge

Chapter 195: The Best Revenge

His gaze turned distant for a second before refocusing on her.

"I let those words get to me... just long enough. I called Neil that night and told him to pull our men off you and your siblings. I didn’t want Arthur thinking I was still watching you, using you."

"And?" Avery questioned.

Archie looked down, exhaling. "I almost filed the divorce papers too."

Avery’s lips parted, but no words came out.

Archie turned to her again, his eyes raw. "But I couldn’t. I was so deep into it, Angel. I knew pulling myself out of this... out of you... would kill me."

He let that confession linger between them, heavy and quiet.

"I decided to leave the country for a while. Clear my head. I had my bags packed, car waiting. Got all the way to the airport."

He paused.

"Then the news of Arthur’s accident broke and everything else that followed." He looked at her, voice barely above a whisper. "So, I drove back."

Avery nodded slowly, then gently laid her head back on his chest, understanding how the rest went without having to hear it. Silence stretched between them, soft and still, until her voice broke through it.

"You know," she said quietly, "you were never an outsider. Not to me, not to Arthur, not to Emma... not even to Grandfather."

Archie’s breath hitched.

"You were always family," she continued. "And I’m sure if they were still here, they’d pick you a billion times to be with me over Brian."

She hesitated, her tone shifting, voice thickening with a sorrow too deep to hide.

"If only they were..."

Archie’s heart spasmed at those words. Guilt, deep and consuming, gripped him by the throat and dragged him into her pain like a weight.

If only they were still here...

What if?

What if he told her the truth? That Arthur and Emma were still alive?

His mouth opened. "I want..."

But Avery cut him off.

"But you know what?" she said, her voice low and bitter. "The fact that they aren’t here, and that I have to take revenge for them, is the only thing keeping me grounded here. Nothing else."

His words died in his throat.

The silence came again, sharper this time. He swallowed, then tried again.

"What would you do," he asked slowly, carefully, "if you found out Arthur and Emma were still alive and well somewhere?"

Avery blinked, then tilted her head.

"I’d wake up one day, take them with me," she said, "and disappear. Somewhere no one could ever find us."

Archie stared. "What? I’d find you."

She glanced up at him.

"I’d go to a place where even you won’t be able to find me."

"And what if I want to come with you?" he asked, brow furrowing.

Avery gave a soft, breathy laugh. "Why would you want to?"

He blinked. "Why else? You’re there. Of course I’d be with you. Didn’t you get anything from what I said earlier tonight at all?"

"I did," she whispered. "And that’s exactly why I wouldn’t tell you when I’m taking off."

Archie’s expression stiffened.

"I’ll disappear somewhere with Arthur and Emma," she went on, "but I won’t stay with them. Because I know... wherever I go, trouble will definitely follow. And if I stay with them, it’ll catch up eventually. They will get harmed, but i will go scot free... as always."

He frowned deeply. "If you’ll run away with them, but won’t stay with them... then where will you go?"

Avery didn’t answer.

Instead, she slowly lifted her head, and looked straight into his eyes.

And Archie saw it then. That look.

That haunting, slow resignation.

She would do it.

She would take them. Disappear. And then... vanish for real.

His chest tightened, breath catching. He tore his gaze away from hers, fast. Because that look—God, that look—he fucking hated it.

The look that said revenge was the only thing keeping her here.

The same look she had the day she signed that paper months ago.

The look that promised, after it was all done, she wouldn’t just disappear from his life.

She’d disappear from the world.

He chuckled darkly, the sound low and bitter. "That’s absurd. Why would you even want to do that?"

But Avery held his gaze, unwavering.

His brow furrowed. "Wait... don’t tell me you didn’t see that doctor I referred to you while I was away. The therapist."

Avery shrugged against his chest. "The doctor didn’t come. And since I couldn’t leave the penthouse... I didn’t end up seeing anyone."

Archie’s jaw clenched. "When we get back, you have to see one."

Avery nodded faintly, but then whispered, "It will not change anything."

He didn’t respond; not aloud. But inside, he was seething. A fury so deep it vibrated through his bones.

He’d always hated the McCallums in principle, what they’d done, what they’d taken from Avery and her family, but now? Now, he wanted to peel their skin back, burn every inch of them, and still, it wouldn’t satisfy the rage clawing through him.

Because they had done the unthinkable.

They hadn’t just hurt his wife; they broke her soul.

Turned the woman who used to hum while working, who made a marriage alliance with someone she didn’t love just so her employees could lead better lives, who dreamed of a quiet life with her siblings and grandfather... into someone who breathed only for vengeance. Who survived on the thought of making those who offended her pay.

His mouth moved before he could stop himself. "You know... I could help you wipe them out. All of them. One fell swoop."

Avery let out a soft, sorrowful laugh. "No... You already offered once. I don’t want your help. If I ever do, I’ll let you know."

"Really?" he asked, voice tight.

She nodded. "Of course. Actually, I should have Valentina down in two weeks. And I’ll be facing Kathy soon."

She shifted slightly, her voice growing low and focused. "That’s why I’m taking that modeling gig in two days. It’ll get me closer to the people who were involved in what happened to Emma. I need to know who that man was... and Kathy—she was the mastermind behind that part of it. I’ll find a way to bring her down using that."

Archie said nothing, just held her closer as she kept talking, her voice steady but laced with a quiet storm. Until eventually, she trailed off. And then... she fell asleep in his arms, breathing soft and even.

He looked down at her, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

Then he leaned in, his lips brushing the shell of her ear as he whispered:

"Just remember, Angel... the best revenge is the kind that ends with you whole again, completely satisfied. Don’t let them take more of your soul than they already have."

☆♡♡♡☆

Archie woke up early.

Not that he’d actually slept.

Especially after what they’d talked about last night, after which Avery woke up few hours later and he’d grabbed the opportunity to take her one more time, this time without protection.

He’d ridden an adrenaline high all night long, his mind replaying every detail of the best ways to take her, over and over again, and she’d passed out on him after the third round, after begging him to stop, then moaning for more when he was inside her. Her body had finally surrendered, out of stamina, and she’d drifted off into sleep.

Now, propped on his elbow, Archie took in her sleeping, naked form.

She looked so docile like this, peaceful in a way that twisted something in his chest. Those delicate features, that slim, breakable body... she reminded him of a porcelain doll, beautiful, fragile, and far too easy to shatter. But the last thing on his mind was destruction.

No. He only wanted to protect this side of her.

The side it seemed she would never again show to the world after what happened months ago.

The one that would only come out for him from now on.

Because no matter how fierce her revenge could get or how cunning she could end up being, Archie knew the truth now.

That she still felt the pain of what happened too deeply. And her revenge was what would help her move forward.

He bent down and brushed a kiss across her forehead. She let out a soft sigh.

It wasn’t even a sexual sound, but it was enough to stir something wild in him again.
