Avery's Game Of Revenge
Chapter 111: Hi...Mom.

Chapter 111: Hi...Mom.

After realizing the mistake in her insinuating that Ian and Orion had been sent by Archie to watch her, Avery kept her mouth shut and dedicated all her attention to the priest up front.

"The Lord be with you," the man, who looked to be around fifty, prayed.

"And with your spirit," the congregation chorused.

"May the Almighty God bless you, The father, the son and the Holy spirit. Go forth, the mass is ended."

"Thanks be to God..."

As the prayers drew to an end, Avery prepared herself for the shock she was going to make the woman in front of her pass through, but alas, she was the one who ended up shocked.

The girl, the fourteen year old girl she had been talking to earlier outside the church; The same girl who heard what she said about Kathy and had proceeded to join her in badmouthing the older woman, wasn’t standing up from her seat.

Why would she be waiting? Avery wondered. But the answer to her question soon came the very next second.

The girl was leaning towards Kathy, an eerie smirk on her face as she said,

"Hi there, Mom." Then a whisper, as the little girl’s eyes hardened, "Stop wasting your time coming this far to pray when we know it’s all a waste. Your prayers aren’t getting answers."

~

It was probably as a result of the life threatening incidents that she only recently passed through, but Avery had changed. A lot from what she used to remember of herself. She had slowly developed the skill of acting fast even when her whole body was shaking from shock of a sudden incident or unexpected event.

Just like what happened few seconds ago...

She had been sitting rooted to one spot as she watched the girl who addressed Kathy as ’mom’, completely speechless and unsure of what she was to think about this until...

"You might be my daughter, Angel. But I won’t have you telling..." Kathy had whispered back.

And even though Avery hadn’t been able to hear the rest of her words, it had been the cue she needed to bolt out of the church while ignoring the questioning look in Ian’s eyes and Orion’s loud calls. She had messed this up. Big time!

Avery had countless reasons to be shocked and she knew that very well. First of all, Kathy McCallum was the new madam of the McCallum family; not just anyone should be able to talk to her.

Secondly, this little girl had just addressed her as ’mom’. A big shock, as Avery had not known Kathy to have any other children apart from Roberts and Valentina all through the 22 years of her life in the McCallum family mansion, especially not one as young as this.

As she sauntered out the large front doors of the church, however, she also could not stop the inner voice that kept screaming in her head about how dumb she had been, pouring out her mind in the presence of a stranger, a teenage girl who now—it seemed—turned out to be Kathy’s McCallum daughter. Illegitimate? Or legitimate? But why would her former aunt hide a child that she gave birth to with her husband’s knowledge, outside the family?

’None of your fucking business, Avery!’ the strict voice in her head chided.

Heck, she was supposed to be the sweet Ava Donovan who arrived from the neighboring country months ago, got unfortunate and became a victim of online abuse and bashing all because she shared identical physical features with a murderer. She was supposed to be the sweet actress who hadn’t reacted even when people were insulting her so much; all because she had a goal. But there—earlier when she saw Kathy alight from the car—she had let her mask slip and had spoken her true thoughts out loud, out to the hearing of a younger seatmate.

Was it because she had regarded the girl as a little kid? Was that why she had grown so comfortable to say something like that in her presence? And now...it had backfired, and her plan was ruined. Maybe not yet. But it was still bound for ruin with what happened.

"If that girl tells Kathy what I said about her, I won’t be able to approach her with the innocent victim facade anymore," Avery murmured. In fact, that would only make Kathy question the authenticity of her identity as the both of them—with Avery now Ava Donovan— hadn’t encountered themselves; not even once in their lives, for she to have reason to talk about her in the way she had done. To badmouth her.

Except she was really Avery McCallum.

If that happened, Kathy would suspect her, rendering the next plan she had against Valentina invalid, as the latter would also have her guards up and wouldn’t easily fall into the laid trap. Apart from that, she wouldn’t be able to approach Brian, Roberts, and Jon without rousing suspicions.

She had planned to take them all at the same time, while making sure she was so innocent and unsuspecting that none of them would think it was worth mentioning her to the others. She knew it was possible. No, it had been possible earlier that day. But now, with the chance of she and Kathy starting off on a wrong note, that plan seemed highly impossible.

Her mind racing with thoughts of how to remedy this, she fiddled through her bag to retrieve and phone and call Dylan. The call connected, but she wasn’t able to say anything before it was snatched out of her hand and disconnected.

By Orion.

"Sorry about that," he said, before she could voice her displeasure or say anything else, "Just saw you were calling the driver and I thought it would be a waste of time for you to wait for him to arrive. We could drop you off instead."

"We?" Avery asked, ready to jump in any car he would be offering her. Asides from not having strength to argue, she wanted to get out of here as quick as possible to avoid being seen by Kathy.

Orion’s face lit up, obviously delighted that she had accepted without him needing to ask twice.

"Ian, to be precise," he replied.

"I hope..." Avery was starting to talk, when a voice from behind, Ian’s, interrupted her, "It’s no trouble. I could use the opportunity to have a quick chat with Arch."

"Then let’s qui—Ouch!" Avery winced, feeling a sliver of pain shot through her big toenail, up to her knees.

In a bid to hurry to the car that was now blinking in the distance after Ian pressed the remote in his hand, she had mistakenly hit her big toenail on a small rock lying in the path. The pain was surprisingly excruciating, so much that she hadn’t noticed her ’ouch’ was so loud, until she began attracting stares from other congregation members on their way home.

Her furtive eyes darted to the entrance of the church, where Kathy and the little girl were yet to emerge from, and she forced herself to forget the pain for a moment, limping all the way to the car.

"Hey!" Orion called after her, quickening his steps so they could be on the same pace, "The car isn’t running away. Why are you rushing?"

"Orion’s right. You are hurt; you shouldn’t walk so fast," Ian supported his younger brother, as he also quickened his steps to stand in Avery’s other side.

The lady they were both worried for, however, decided to ignore them. Still ignoring the pain from her leg, she leaped into the car as soon as one of the men opened the door.

"Damn!" she cussed, letting out a long exhale in relief.

The car front doors opened at the same time, with both brothers getting in from either sides and slamming the door after themselves. Ian to the driver’s side while Orion to the passenger’s seat.

"You alright?" the latter asked, looking in the rearview mirror to examine Avery’s face, as he fastened his own seatbelt.

"Yeah. It was just a slight pain," she replied with a blatant lie, as it was she hadn’t even checked the toe yet, and from the way she hissed silently, that she was still feeling the pain.

Avery crossed the affected leg over the other, rolled her baggy jeans up and slipped off her sandals so she could examine the toe carefully. However, it wasn’t the blood on her toe, but something else that caught her attention.

The anklet.
