Chapter 78: Chapter 77 Save him
Silence enclosed the room like a blanket. Every single one of them was in deep thought.
"Why is that dangerous?" Olivia’s voice broke the silence.
"I noticed that his body is already fighting against the poison, which means if we make his essence course round his body, it could eliminate the poison... But the problem is we can’t get it back into his core," Abigail whispered the last sentence.
"That is the worst idea I have ever heard," the stranger gritted his teeth. He could not believe that they had actually gotten to this point.
The silence returned, heavier this time. It was so thick that it was suffocating.
"Then we’ll find a catalyst," Olivia said, cutting through the silence like a sharp knife.
As if Abigail had finally remembered what she had forgotten, she clasped her hands together. "Exactly! All we need is to find someone who is strong enough to sustain him during the process."
"And what do you mean by sustain?"
"Someone who could transfer essence to him," the stranger sighed. "Unfortunately, my attributes are different from his. I cannot help with the process."
Abigail’s eyes sparkled before dulling again. "Olivia, you have the same attributes as him, but it is very unfortunate that you are not powerful enough."
Olivia stared at Lucian, hope surging through her eyes. Her fist clenched. They had found a way to save him, and she alone could.
Even if she was not powerful enough, she knew how to go about it. Her eyes shone with resolve.
"I can," her voice came out firm.
Abigail shook her head. "No, you can’t. You will end up dead before you can even save him."
Olivia took a step forward. "I said I can. Even if I can’t, I will die trying." She wasn’t just saying it to prove herself. Somewhere inside, she needed this to work. Maybe to make up for what she’d done. Maybe she couldn’t shake off the way Lucian looked at her before everything went wrong... like he believed in her, even when she didn’t.
The stranger looked at her with mixed feelings. He didn’t really know if he should continue hating on her, as she was willing to sacrifice herself for Lucian. But he could not let his guard down. What if she ruined the only chance Lucian had to survive?
"No, you are not. It is better we find someone capable. We only got one chance, and we can’t afford to lose," he strongly disagreed.
"I just said I can. Why won’t you guys believe me? Like you said, this is the only chance we got. Who are we going to find to risk their life for him? I caused this. Let me solve it," Olivia pleaded, her heart wrenching with pain. She couldn’t stop the tears from flowing down her cheeks.
"Olivia, I know you are feeling emotional right now, but we have to think this through. We know you are not strong enough. But I know someone who is strong enough," Abigail held her shoulder, her voice low and slow. She needed to make sure all her words sank into Olivia’s brain.
Olivia sniffled. "And who might that be?"
Abigail pressed her lips into a thin line. "Alexa."
Olivia’s heart slammed against her chest. ’Alexa? Of all people?’
Olivia wanted to laugh so badly, the irony was just too much. Alexa, the person she was supposed to broadcast her secrets, was the one she needed help from?
Olivia buckled beneath her knees. This was not going to be possible.
If she could get through to Eritrea, she wouldn’t mind her taking control over her body again. That option was better than asking Alexa for help.
"Who is Alexa?" the stranger couldn’t help but ask.
"She is one of the top figures here. She is very powerful and also has a fire attribute. She is the best candidate for this," Abigail hurriedly said, her eyes glancing towards the dispirited Olivia, who was sitting on the ground.
"We should go get her then."
Abigail wanted to roll her eyes at him, but she held back and scoffed at him. "Get her? I have no idea where she is right now."
"Isn’t she supposed to be sleeping?"
"Nobody knows that. She might be somewhere else. If we want to get her, we have to wait for morning," Abigail glanced at the wall clock. "Which is about two hours from now," she added.
As they were busy contemplating, Lucian’s body jerked again, thick black blood splattering the floor as his chest heaved shallowly.
Abigail pressed two fingers to his neck and froze.
"He doesn’t have time anymore," she murmured, her voice cracking. "At this rate, we have... twenty minutes. Maybe less."
Panic gripped the room like a vice.
The stranger ran a hand through his hair, muttering, "We don’t even have time to go looking for Alexa now, do we?"
Abigail shook her head slowly. "Even if we knew where she was... we’d never make it back in time."
"Then let me do it," Olivia said quietly.
The room stilled.
"What?" The stranger turned sharply toward her.
"You heard me." She stepped forward, fire in her eyes. "Use my essence."
The stranger looked conflicted. He didn’t know if he should refuse her or not. But at this point, what choice did he really have?
"Are you really sure you want to do this? This is like a death sentence to both of you," Abigail tried to warn.
But Olivia paid a deaf ear to her words. "We should get started."
Olivia stood in front of Lucian. She hoped this would save him. Deep down, she felt she knew him. It was like she couldn’t bear the thought of watching him die.
Without any more words, the stranger drew a dark purplish rune in the form of a pentagram. The light illuminated the room. The pentagram rotated slowly before picking up speed.
He then sent the rune towards Lucian’s chest. As the rune got closer, the smaller it became.
When it fully entered his body, a golden hue flickered across his body.
"Olivia. Now," Abigail ordered.
Olivia closed her eyes. The world slipped away, replaced by her sea of consciousness, only this time, it didn’t stay calm...
