Chapter 74: Chapter 73 Stay With Me
Footsteps raced down the dark, ashy ground. The gasping for air echoed through the late night. The sound of her racing heartbeat echoed in her ears.
Olivia prayed inwardly. ’Please be safe.’ She chanted desperately.
Olivia froze, as her eyes locked on the figure lying on the ground. A storm of thoughts swirled through her head. " It can’t be.." she hesitantly walked towards him.
When she got closer, she saw Lucian lying still, his blood pooling beneath him, staining the ashy ground red.
She dropped beside him, not caring how hard the ground was, her fingers trembled as they brushed his shoulders.
His face pale, sweat pooling at his brow. She brushed aside a strand of hair stuck to his cheek, her hand trembling. " Please... stay with me."
"Lucian..." she whispered, her voice cracking like a snapped thread. "Don’t scare me, get up please," she whispered again, as if she was scared of it being loud enough to miss the sound of his voice. Her eyes shone with fear and guilt.
If only she had stayed beside him, he wouldn’t have been in this critical situation. If only she had left the underground world with Abigail, this wouldn’t have happened. This was... all her fault.
Hot tears streamed down her face, dropping on Lucian’s body. She raised his head up, resting him on her shoulders. The moonlight casting shadows over their faces.
She felt déjà vu. Her memories flashed before her. She saw an image of her and a man with silver-white long hair embracing, waiting for their death.
Pain shot through her skull as if it was being ripped apart. Her eyes turned blurry for a moment, confusion contorting her face.
Why was she there? Who was the man? Why were they clinging onto each other, even at death’s door? Was that her past life?
A throbbing headache shot through her skull. Her eyes dilated for a moment. "Lucian, wake up. We can’t stay here in the open for long," she cried out desperately, as her eyes darted about the vast land, searching for any movement.
But Lucian remained silent. His shallow breath was the only assurance that he was still alive. Sweat covered his body. His wet, long, dark eyelashes fluttered slightly. His lips were dry. His skin burned with fever.
As Olivia tried to get him up, her hand touched a wet section of his back. A sob escaped her lips. She had no idea what to do, except bringing him to Abigail.
She circled his arms around her shoulder. As she walked two steps further, they both fell to the ground. Olivia cried out—his weight was too much for her to carry.
But she wouldn’t give up now. She had to save his life. She crawled closer to him again, repeating the same process.
Her eyes burned with resolution, but after taking a few steps forward, they fell again. A frustrated cry echoed through the night.
Olivia bit back her cry. She would do it again and again until she got him to safety.
But as she was about to carry him again, a shadow blurred from the corner of her eyes to her front.
Her breath hitched, her fists clenched. She gently laid Lucian back before stepping in front of him. If anybody was going to get him, they had to go through her first.
The figure hissed in irritation. "Step aside," his voice was calm and steady. His fierce dark brown eyes told her he had no time for her nonsense.
"Never. If you want to get him, you have to go through me," she muttered, her hand crackling with fire.
The figure only spared her a glance before turning his gaze to Lucian’s motionless body. His teeth gritted.
"Lucian," the voice called out worriedly, but he got no answer.
"What did you do to him?" The stranger growled. His hand twitched, ready for battle. But deep down, he knew this fight had to wait—the priority was to get Lucian to safety.
Olivia was taken aback by the question. Her fists clenched in guilt. Her gaze avoided him.
"I didn’t..." her voice cracked. She swallowed hard. "I didn’t mean for this to happen."
His glare didn’t soften. Rather he wanted to scoff at her pitiful acting. "Intentions won’t keep him alive."
" Now move aside," his words came out cold and harsh. But Olivia didn’t move an inch. " He will die if we don’t save him now... I’m his friend!" He snapped. His gaze scrutinized her in every way possible.
’Friend?’ Olivia glanced at him one last time before moving aside. She remembered his voice. He was the stranger, the one who warned Lucian...
The stranger rushed toward Lucian. He fell to his knees. He tried to wake him up, but there was no response. He raised him up, his hand landing on his wound. Blood was still flowing out from it.
The stranger’s eyes blazed. He glared at Olivia before carrying Lucian up, wrapping Lucian’s arm around his neck.
As they walked away, Olivia’s hand trembled beside her. "Wait... Where are you taking him?"
The stranger didn’t answer.
"I know someone who can help... She is a healer, please, we don’t have time," her voice came in a rush.
The stranger’s steps faltered before coming to a halt. His calculative eyes stared far at the horizon. If he was going to get him healed, he had to escape from this fortress into the domain. That would take a lot of time, and if they were caught it would worsen everything. The best choice was to go along with her suggestion.
He didn’t trust her. But Lucian’s life came first. A little compromise wouldn’t hurt.
"Lead the way," he said hesitantly. But this didn’t mean that he had forgiven her.
Olivia ran in front of them, leading the way to Abigail’s house.
Knock. Knock.
Olivia hastily banged on Abigail’s door. ’What if she hadn’t returned?’ she thought inwardly before knocking again.
The stranger hissed, irritation and anger burning through his eyes. He couldn’t believe he had wasted his time. Why did he even trust her?
As he turned around to walk away, the door suddenly creaked open.
Abigail stood in the doorway, her eyes widened at the sight of Lucian’s blood-soaked body.
