Chapter 45: Almost Secretary Ceaser’s private lab rat.

It took some seconds for Secretary Ceaser Rommel’s brain to process what his eyes were seeing. "Holy fucking shit!" The grip he had on the gun loosened, causing it to clatter to the ground.

The nurse, his captive, saw her opportunity and twisted herself free. As soon as she was within what she thought of a safe distance she screeched, "I do not care if you are the Secretary of defense, I am going to sue you for this." A sharp hiss escaped her as she rubbed the mottled marks on her throat.

Her frantic words faded into silence for secretary Ceaser’s attention was riveted by the sight before him.

"What is going on here?" He shoved everyone out of his way, moving closer to have a better look at Carson. "How the hell did this happen? Do you have some experimental miracle cure that the government does not know about? How dare you keep it from me at such a time when I already told you that this is a matter of national importance?" He demanded to know, his voice sharp with accusation. "I will have all of your jobs if you do not hand it over right away."

With a miracle cure, he could send in as many soldiers as could be authorized into the mist. Maybe they could be attached to chains.

They could tug on the chains when danger presented itself and then they would be pulled out of the mist. If they were burned, just give them the cure, wait for a few hours and send them in again until they had answers.

Ceaser Rommel could see it all clearly in his mind. He would involve press and beef himself up, so when he contented in the next presidential elections, he would be the candidate that got the job done.

Some of the doctor’s lips twitched in response, many of them did not like the Secretary of Defense or appreciate how he barked and talk to them with condescending.

"Mr. Secretary, can’t you see that we are shocked as well?" Doctor Roy Fassbender, a trauma surgeon raised his voice without fear and faced down Ceaser.

Ceaser Rommel did not like to be challenged, and he shoved the doctor back. "Don’t get in my face doctor. You forget who I am and who you are."

The secret service agents had to step in to do their job, protect the secretary. The military officers in their uniforms that were part of a task force drew their weapons.

The doctors backed away, frightened of course as anybody would be if guns were pointed at them.

Willy Sikes in the meantime was about to lose his mind because nothing was making sense. "You had burns all over your body when you came out of the mist Carson. Where are they?" He moved closer to study his friend’s body.

A frown formed on Carson’s face. "What are you talking about? What burns?" He asked, confusion setting in.

Secretary Rommel cleared his throat and pointed at Carson. "Don’t take a single step before we make sense of this." He pointed at Doctor Fassbender. "You, explain."

Doctor Fassbender was unhappy with the disrespect, but he went ahead and explained everything to Carson because science and its advancement came first to him. "I cannot scientifically explain how your body has healed itself." He concluded.

Secretary Rommel tried to touch Carson, but he backed away.

The secretary was unhappy, and his eyes narrowed. "I can, attest to the fact that you entered the mist and came out with burns that have healed miraculously. Something definitely happened to you while you were in there. Now I will need you to tell me all that you encountered and what you saw. Proper tests should be conducted on you." He spun in one swift motion and commanded doctor Fassbender. "Do all the tests necessary and after, I will interrogate him personally. You have two hours before he is transported out of here." He placed his arms behind his back and waited for the doctors to pull out their needles and scalpels.

Carson was uncooperative. He had no plans to let anyone touch or test him before things were clarified. And he did not want to be questioned by Secretary Ceaser because he knew how the sly man operated. He would use torture, if necessary, until her got the answers he wanted.

He had started out in the military, using cruel underhanded means to take out those he perceived as enemies. Because of his nice influential military background, he sailed safely, earning promotions until he was injured in a IED explosion which took his right leg.

It also gave him hero status and a chance to bounce back as an ambassador and then the Secretary of State. He was famous for getting the job done. But ordinary people did not know how he got the job done. They just saw the results.

"Transported. To where? I have not given my consent to have any tests performed on me and I am not going anywhere with you Secretary Ceaser." Carson’s eyes were unyielding implying that he was not going to co-operate with a mad man. "I am calling the president."

Secretary Ceaser invaded Carson’s space, close enough for the sour stench of his stale breath to crawl down Carson’s throat.

He snatched the phone out of Carson’s hand. "Listen you freak, this is not some kind of request, it is an order. I do not need your permission, and your rights do not matter when it comes to national security." He turned to face the doctors. "On second thought I will be leaving with Carson Warnock right now, the military doctors will do the tests on him." He gestured for his men to take Carson.

The doctors put up a resistance, blocking the soldiers. "We were authorized by the president as the task force handling all mist related illnesses. You cannot take this man and turn him into your private lab rat." Doctor Fassbender growled out. "You don’t even know if he is infected and others will be infected too if he leaves isolation."

Carson did not like what he heard especially the lab rat part. Knowing Secretary Ceaser it was not impossible especially considering the abnormality which had happened to him.

"Grab him." Secretary Ceaser commanded his men.

A tussle broke out between the doctors and the soldiers. The doctors stood no chance, especially after Secretary Ceaser fired in the air. "You will all be considered terrorists if you don’t back down." he threatened them.

Frightened, the doctors lost the zeal to fight.

Two of the secretary’s soldiers held Carson’s arms, one on each side. "Sir come with us." They wrenched him harder punishing his resistance with bruising pressure.

"You are not taking him anywhere." Willy announced, handing his phone to secretary Ceaser. "Mr. Secretary it is the president; he says Carson Warnock should be taken to the White house immediately. A helicopter is waiting outside to fly us there directly." A tiny smile appeared on his face.

He had secretly started placing calls as soon as he saw that degenerated spark of light in Secretary Ceaser’s eyes.

Secretary Ceaser grabbed the phone with a withering glare on his face. After a few minutes of arguing, he hurled the phone to the ground, a guttural snarl of defeat tearing from his throat as he looked between Carson and Willy. "We shall meet at the white house; this is not over."
